Review

"Giselle Shardlow crafts a multi-layered story that offers not just thetriumphs of a young heroine, but also the benefits of a yoga practice on the young body. What a gift for young kids today to find a story as rich as this thatallows them to participate in a practice that will leave them healthierand more empowered."- Alanna Kaivalya, founder of The Kaivalya Yoga Method"I love that the two main characters in the book have special needs(hearing loss) and are portrayed in a positive & empowered way! It is a moving story of the power of being true to yourself & friendship when being faced with teasing/bullying."- Angela Moorad, founder of OMazing Kids "Giselle encourages children to think of others, to celebrate diversity, and to move their bodies without feeling self-conscious or competitive."- Katie Manitsas, Director of Jivamukti Yoga Sydney "As a retired school librarian, I appreciate books which can be used to introduce multiple ideas. In addition to the yoga component, this story includes some academic concepts as well as emotional intelligence. There is much to learn and discuss in this deceivingly simple looking book!"- Eve Panzer, founder of Barefoot Librarian

I love yoga story books! I am a parent & me yoga teacher and I like to have a different book for each theme; this will work for my Chakras/Colors class. And can spark a nice discussion about those different from you. I'd say this is for 5+ rather than under 4 because of story length.(Some of the other books I have are "ABC's of Yoga" for ABC class; "Roar Like a Lion" for animal class where we do animal breaths and poses, "I Am Yoga" and then I just have some active books like "Clap Your Hands"/ "Shake a Leg" since the kids love those and "From head to toe" for body parts class)I have at least one of her other books (Sophia's Jungle Adventure); she also has Good Night, Animal World, Luke's Beach Day, The abc of Australian Animals and Hello, Bali.It would be ideal to have an easy kids book on sun salutations, and a simpler abc one (like B is for Bear but Y is for Yogi) and Yogi Says (I sometimes use Elmo Says but I know some parents don't like characters) *hint hint*; if anyone has any suggestions post a reply :)Spoiler Alert ~ Story: "Say hello to Anna," announced the teacher. "She's our new student from the country." Anna looked down at her toes. She felt a pain in her stomach. "Hello, Aaaannaaa!" chimed the class. What is that read thing in her sparkly backpack?" "Check out her curly hair" "Look at her crazy-colored shoes!" whispered the children to each other. Anna couldn't hear them. At recess, Anna unrolled her red yoga mat next to the tree. She felt safe on her yoga mat. She had learned to do yoga by watching her mom every morning. As she moved through her poses, she imagined traveling the world. That day, Anna imagined going on a farm adventure. She arched up like a cat. She kicked up like a horse...and she waddled like a duck. Anna was in her own little world on her red yoga mat. She couldn't hear the fire children watching her. The next day, at recess, Anna unrolled her orange yoga mat next to the tree. That day she imagined a journey to the jungle. She swayed like a palm tree. She stretched like a jaguar...and she hissed like a snake. Anna was in her own little world on her orange yoga mat. She couldn't hear the 10 children watching her. Anna looked forward to recess time. She ignored the funny looks and laughter from the other children. Her mother always said to her, "Be true to yourself, Anna. If you want to be happy, then you must be happy for others around you." Every day, she remembered what her mother said. She thought about being happy inside. She tried not to worry that she didn't fit in or that she was different. The following day, Anna unrolled her yellow yoga mat next to the tree. That day she imagined a safari to the desert. She stretched up like a pyramid. She perched like a sphinx...and she bent back like a camel. Anna was in her own little world on her yellow yoga mat. She couldn't hear the 20 children watching her. One day, as Anna was unrolling her green yoga mat under the tree, she felt a soft tap on her shoulder. "I have a hearing loss too" Nick pointed shyly at Anna's hearing aids. Anna was surprised that Nick was talking to her. She had noticed groups of giggling girls following him around the playground. "I lip read. I don't know anyone like me." Nick pointed to her mat. "What is it you're doing anyway?" "I imagine that I am traveling the world. I visit deserts, oceans and forests." Anna leaper around her mat. "Why don't I teach you to lip read and you teach me to travel the world?" Nick grinned from ear to ear and felt happy for the first time in a long time. Each day, Anna and Nick practice lip reading together. And at recess time, Anna taught Nick how to travel the world. "All you need is a little concentration and a whole lot of imagination!" Anna told her new friend. Anna unrolled her blue yoga mat under the tree. She gave Nick her red one. They trekked through the mountains. They swayed like trees. They stood tall like mountains...and they moved like bears. They didn't notice the group of 40 children watching them. One day, Anna unrolled her purple yoga mat next to the tree. "Let's imagine going to the ocean!" Nick joined Anna under the tree. They flapped like swimmers. They balanced like surfers...and they titled like sails in the wind. they were so busy being seagulls, sandcastles and seashells that they didn't notice the 40 children around them. Suddenly it started to sprinkle. Anna's legs shot up like water from a dolphin's blowhole. The rain fell gently on her face. "I'm happy inside and my dreams have come true!" Anna felt a soft tap on her toes. "Look Anna! Our RAINBOW!" said Nick excitedly. Anna smiled when she saw that a group of children had come to join them on their own colorful yoga mats.

I have used the book Anna and her Rainbow Colored Yoga Mats several times to create delightful children's yoga classes. The inner-city school where I taught did not have a PE program. The children were from mostly single parent homes and 80% @ or below poverty level. Anna was a fabulous vehicle to teach the kids how to make beautiful new shapes with their bodies while learning compassion and relaxation as well. After reading the story aloud, each student was guided to pick a pose from the story that intrigued them (the book is loaded with wonderful yoga postures). The kids were then invited to take the shape of the pose and show it to the class. All of the kids were excited to mimic the poses and add creative twists to each one. By the time our 45 minutes were up together, the kids did about 20 poses. They were exhilarated, enthusiastic and proud of their yoga accomplishments. They LOVED the story and how it became a catalyst to get them to stretch, balance, focus, strengthen and quiet their minds and bodies while learning about friendship and diversity!!I have also used the story for toddlers and pre-schoolers @ the children's museum where I teach Story Time Yoga and the children responded exquisitely to the story as they were either introduced or re-introduced to yoga. They celebrated their ability to move in new ways with their bodies and their smiles lit up the room.Minda Devorkin, Milwaukee Youth Yoga Instructor and author of Beau the Bee.

This is a great yoga book for kids. There are many poses you can follow along with as you read, and on top of that, it has a great message. I read this to a group of kids (7-9 year olds) as part of our yoga class and they were completely attentive to every word of the story. I highly recommend this if you are looking for a way to get kids interested in yoga. Even if your kids already love yoga, this is another great tool to add to your library for inspiring a little movement and a sense of empathy and compassion.

Absolutely beautiful book with a great story. Planned to give to my 5 year old granddaughter, but found more appropriate for the 8 year old. Definitely recommend this one!

I love this book! I teach yoga in an elementary school and this is perfect for pre-K and Kindergarten aged children! We had so much fun on these adventures. I plan to purchase more books by this author.

Not impressed. But I am sure some others love it.

I'm a children's yoga teacher and this is a book for teaching yoga to children so it is perfect. It has nice pictures with a great story that teaches a sweet lesson.

A book of diversity and inclusion. Great to have in your library to be able to help children understand and accept difference.

Review

“A well-written story. Occasional emotional abysses provide a touch of melodrama.... To many girls the setting will be fascinating -- and the boarding school background is usually a popular one (only too hard to find today).” ―Kirkus Reviews

About the Author

Madeleine L'Engle (1918-2007) was the Newbery Medal-winning author of more than 60 books, including the much-loved A Wrinkle in Time. Born in 1918, L'Engle grew up in New York City, Switzerland, South Carolina and Massachusetts. Her father was a reporter and her mother had studied to be a pianist, and their house was always full of musicians and theater people. L'Engle graduated cum laude from Smith College, then returned to New York to work in the theater. While touring with a play, she wrote her first book, The Small Rain, originally published in 1945. She met her future husband, Hugh Franklin, when they both appeared in The Cherry Orchard. Upon becoming Mrs. Franklin, L'Engle gave up the stage in favor of the typewriter. In the years her three children were growing up, she wrote four more novels. Hugh Franklin temporarily retired from the theater, and the family moved to western Connecticut and for ten years ran a general store. Her book Meet the Austins, an American Library Association Notable Children's Book of 1960, was based on this experience. Her science fantasy classic A Wrinkle in Time was awarded the 1963 Newbery Medal. Two companion novels, A Wind in the Door and A Swiftly Tilting Planet (a Newbery Honor book), complete what has come to be known as The Time Trilogy, a series that continues to grow in popularity with a new generation of readers. Her 1980 book A Ring of Endless Light won the Newbery Honor. L'Engle passed away in 2007 in Litchfield, Connecticut.

I first read this book when I was twelve years old. My local librarian had recommended A Wrinkle In Time, and that was so great that I hunted down the only other L'Engle book available to me at that time. I found the boarding school life fascinating, totally unimagineable to me at the time. Skiing as well. Flip's first trembling forays into love, real responsibility, ethics, and morality are all something any young child can relate to. This was a wonderful read; still is.

I have loved this book ever since I first read it around age 10. My daughters, now grown up, also read and loved it and still take it on every family ski trip we make! The setting in Switzerland is magical, and even the school is a place you'd want to be (I did!) Philippa is a totally human, identifiable fifteen-year-old, with her faults, foibles and very understandable feelings--I love her roommates, too, especially Erma.At the same time, there is a dark side present in the aftermath of post-WWII Europe and the atrocities of Nazi Germany, from which Europe is still recovering. Through Paul and his parents' fate, through the life of Madame Perceval (Philippa's favorite teacher) and also, most sensititvely, through the divisions in Erma's family, there is realism, interjected into adolescent lives and concerns.Good triumphs, however, and no one can be left un-cheering (and dry-eyed) at the end.I will re-read this book every few years for the rest of my life!

If you are currently roaming the various written reviews deciding whether or not to read this book, stop, and read it. I guarantee you will not find a better written yet beautifully simple story. I believe this book will appeal particularly to teens (I say so because I am one) if not any age, and believe me when I say this, I do not (emphasis on the not) write reviews, but this book just demanded one even at 2:oo in the morning. To any readers who like romance, this is my favorite type, awkard in just the right way and deep yet relatable (not in a complicatly confusing manner as some books tend to gravitate towards). No doubt this book is well written, and in my opinion this book is better than A Wrinkle In Time, which I also love dearly. The scenes are described so vividly, and in such a straight forward manner with every word leaving a lasting impression. This is truly a must read, and once again, very relatable. I am so glad I stumbled upon this rare discovery! Despite being an avid book reader it has been a while since I've been so blown away.

I was surprised at how much I enjoyed this book! It was such an enjoyable read. Will recommend it to my granddaughters!

Don't hesitate to read this one. I have always loved L'Engle's writing, and this novel did not disappoint. I instantly felt connection to the main character, Flip, and loved going through the school year with her.

Wonderful and sweet! Written in a time when the young were allowed to be young. Very enjoyable and a great work of fiction for the young of all ages.

Loved this book as a child, still good memories. My Aunt gave me the paperback years ago and it was lost. Happy to have it again.

A Granddaughter gift and she liked as usual, and couldn't put it down until the end.

Review

"Captivating. If you think you know AIG, you don't know the half of it without knowing its history. Greenberg and Cunningham splendidly lay out the trials, setbacks and successes of this enormous insurance giant. It's a fun, engrossing read -- and if you're an AIG investor, you're crazy not to put your hands on a copy."Robert Weinstein, The Street / MSN Money"Great book. For as much rightful anger and disrespect the letters 'AIG' elicit, this book actually changed my view of the insurance giant. Greenberg and Cunningham detail who they blame for the company's downfall. Don't pretend you don't want to hear the rest of that story."The Motley Fool"A fascinating company history and account of how, after Greenberg's ouster in 2005, AIG made disastrous mortgage bets that drove it into the arms of the feds."The Wall Street Journal"Epic."The Financial Times"Strong, fast-moving and well-crafted.  A remarkable story."--John R. Coyne Jr., The National Interest"A useful contribution to the ongoing shaping of the story of the recent financial crisis.  The authors examine Greenberg's career building the biggest insurance company in the world. A Korean War veteran, Greenberg brought Western insurance products to the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, helped open China to Western finance, and provided indispensable, sometimes covert, services to the U.S. government."Kirkus Reviews"The AIG Story is well documented, telling of how the company virtually collapsed [after] Greenberg was pushed out of leadership. The book has much information to share with financial leaders to help grow a business and to protect a company during periods of economic downturns. The narrative is written in a style that is understandable."William Taylor, ABA Banking Journal

Every time there's a big story like this, you can count on a passel of "journalists" to come a-runnin' to cash in on it. Well, I'm not an insurance or financial expert and personally don't worship at the Hank Greenberg altar. However, my spouse retired from his exec position at AIG before the excrement hit the impeller and says this is absolutely the one that gets it right. If you want to know why this man pretty much never loses and is, to use a regrettably hackneyed phrase, really the smartest guy in the room, read this. If you've read others on this topic, you'll notice the difference in quality, detail, and language. If you wondered why Elliot Spitzer got in so deep, you'll find out here.An engrossing read, obviously well-informed. Bound to be original source material when the B-school types do their case studies. They could do a lot worse than to listen to Hank Greenberg.

"The AIG Story" is well written and, despite not being a business person, I found it very informative about the insurance business and how a successful company is made. The book is in two parts: the early days of Hank Greenberg's insurance career, the start of AIG on his watch, and the world-wide expansion of AIG and the American Insurance Industry. However, I found reading Part 2 VERY difficult to read, as I had to read about the almost maniacal antics of a New York State politician by the name of ELLIOT SPITZER, who had no business being NYS AG, much less NYS governor later on. As many will recall, Spitzer's personal stupidity finally got to him when he appeared in a Federal indictment calling him "Client #9" in a taking-down of a prostitution ring, which resulted in his embarassing (to his family and supporters, but apparently not to Spitzer) resignation from the Governor's office. Reading in the book how Spitzer, with little or no evidence, went after AIG and Greenberg personally, for no reason other than Spitzer's ego and political ambitions, "crafted" a personal vendetta against AIG, knowing how Spitzer's "career" would end. What made reading this all that much more difficult was how the Board of "Directors" of AIG had no back-bone to support Greenberg or to face-off with the lunacy of an out-of-control politician. They caved in, to the detriment of AIG. I tried to pass up many pages detailing Spitzer's antics, but continued reading of Part 2 has come to a halt, if only temporarily.Part 1 would have made a good book in itself, leaving out the Spitzer "era."If you have any background in business, and aspire to move up in your industry, read this book, even if it's only Part 1.

The list of properties AIG put up in fire sale is staggering. The government "raped" AIG;took 80% of the company. It's unprecedented. But, AIG deserved it; a subsidiary in London ofthe largest insurance company in the world brought down the whole house. It's comparable to having 10,000employees and being worth $1 billion and one employee destroys your company. One subsidiaryunder the direction of one incompetent, covetous geek "gambled" the entire company into oblivion.

I worked at AIG for eighteen years, so was intrigued when this book came out. The extent of the story is thorough and fascinating. It not only provides an overview of events from the early days, but it also goes into how the demise of AIG came about, and its sad outcome. This ending is significant because it shows how, when a corporate culture changes as it did when Greenberg was ousted from AIG, the focus of the organization can become imbalanced, with dire consequences. It gives us a look into the new corporate environment post-Enron and post-Sarbanes-Oxley, where companies can no longer be managed without interference from outside sources (government, lawyers, bureaucrats and self-motivated witch hunters like Spitzer). Such outside meddling stymies creativity and dilutes the benefits that can be derived from having talented, motivated employees.

Very interesting history of AIG. Second half of the book relates to the bailout of AIG. Read this book first and then read Good for the Money: My Fight to Pay Back American. The second book is AIG post bailout.

Hank Greenberg's history as recounted here is impressive. Personally I would have enjoyed a book this size that was all dedicated to the building of AIG, with more detail, and more fascinating stories from the early years.Nevertheless this is a vigorous and impressive defense of himself. Having not read the other more critical bio I can't speak too boldly, but I feel safe in saying that the simplistic view of Mr. Greenberg as nothing but a conniving, greedy, capitalist is a very unbalanced view considering a lifetime of incredible business accomplishments. It also makes an extremely convincing argument that the AIG distress that lead to the government bailout never would have happened had he not been forced out under pressure generated by Spitzer in 2005. I'm also convinced that he would not have needed a government bailout even if it had. He would have negotiated well for AIG and been able to tap into other options to rescue the company. He's a legendary CEO for a reason and you need the skills, connections, ingenuity, and tenacity of such a man in times of crisis. This is also an excellent read for anyone interested in international diplomacy. It provides a decent snapshot, through accounts, of how global business is closely tied to international diplomacy and national policy.

This book reads like a sequence of events without a real story arch. I don't find that much of Hank's character is really explored -- you certainly don't feel like you know what makes him tick. Rather, you hear a lot about what he did, in 1971, and 1972, and 1973, etc.If I didn't work in insurance already I don't think I'd be able to make it through this book. I read it to completion, but would not recommend it to anyone outside my field.
