Content is relevant but I am having an issue with the figures contained in the book. The graphs were authored as multi-color in many places and illustrate important concepts, I can however not view the graphs as they are not color! Additionally the book actually refers to it's digital versions to obtain the color figures but those didn't come with this purchase. A hundred dollar book but it doesn't have color graphs?Update: Publisher does not have access to the color figures! They will not provide the pdf without additional cost (even though they refer to the color figures in their figure descriptions). Avoid this book in printed form. Customer Service was a failure.

It is frightening...for both partners. I found myself losing my temper and then feeling guilty. Carol Howell's book is an easy read and has given me the tools, direction, and confidence to deal with dementia. Thank you, Carol, for giving me peace so I can do the right thing.

Wonderful book if you have a family members or friends with dementia, especially if you are a caregiver. It explains in simple terms the physical aspects of dementia and gives wonderful advice on how to relate to dementia patients. My husband has a close friend and I have a sister with Alzheimer’s and this book has been so helpful in our understanding of how to get into their world, how to treat them with love and respect and has actually helped us find patients in dealing with them. I would give 6 stars if I could! I ordered 4 additional copies to give friends who are struggling with family members with these issues.

She offers expert, practical tips on how to manage your emotions and help your loved one through this horrible time. She's even included jokes at the end of each chapter to help the reader see the lighter side. I so appreciate her caring, funny approach.If you only read one book to educate and aid you in helping a dementia victim, this is the one I recommend. Thank you, Ms. Howell, for opening your heart and our minds by talking about dementia!

It is okay. Some of it is written to be cute and light. And, anyone dealing with dementia needs l-i-g-h-t at times.As she says at the end of one chapter "Sometimes you just have to laugh" - yes, I suppose so. I don't appreciate the feeling of this book although it provides a lot of useful information. I bought three books more or less at once. One can't get enough education and perspective on this subject. The style of writing may appeal more to others. I don't want to 'throw out the baby with the bath water' - it is useful.

This book has been a godsend for me and for my Dad as we struggle to understand the changes my mother is going through with Alzheimers. It is written in a such a way as to be readily understood and provides us with the peace of mind we need to deal with the rapid changes Mom is experiencing. I highly recommend it for others who are overwhelmed with simply dealing day to day with this situation and don't have time or concentration to wade through pompously technical writings on the subject. Carol Howell hits just the right note based on her expertise on the subject and her personal experience with it.

Easy to read book with lots of helpful information related to dementia. Each chapter covers all the issues that families encounter. It gives you reassurance and helps you feel like you're not alone in the journey. She always ends with some sort of "funny" that encourages you to laugh and smile. I researched a lot of books and this by far is the best one if you are a caretaker of family member with someone with dementia. She also does podcasts that help you understand dementia and offers many helpful tips on how to help your loved one on their journey.

They are long-lived, dependable landmarks in addition to all their other gifts.In The Long Long Life of Trees, we learn not only their lifespans (30 years for apple, 3000 for yews), but what uses their wood is, what chemical compounds we make from their fruit, their sap or their bark, and how history and literature have treated them (badly for the willow, royally for the oak). It took 2000 oaks to make a warship. Holly trees date from the Cretaceous. Apples came from Kazakhstan, willows from China. Elms and horse chestnuts - museum pieces unfortunately.The book suffers from one thing – images. There are lots of black and white etchings and woodcuts, far more artistic than informative, and I found it impossible to read the book without an internet search engine handy. Stafford goes to great lengths describing famous trees in various locales, but usually doesn’t show them, and when she does, it’s monochrome or grayscale. This is sinful. Trees with a circumference of 50 feet need to be seen if only to be believed. There’s no point describing glorious blossoms if all you’re going to show is a line drawing.It is well researched, and the passion shows on every page. This is a nicely written overview about the history, folklore, and nature of 17 varieties of trees. It is a good introduction, but not particularly eloquent or insightful or personal as Thomas Parkenham's "Meetings with Remarkable Trees" or the works of Roger Deakin or Nancy Hugo "Seeing Trees" or Archie Miles "The Trees that made Britain".

A very good book for the beginners and more. You learn the basics and the techniques and most of all how to self motivate!

Good book for beginners quick read. Pictures helped and the info was intro level climbing info you would from 30 minutes at a local crag.

Experienced climbers will find little, if any, of this information useful. Unless, they've learned about climbing from someone who doesn't really know what they're doing. There are lots of people out there who act like they know what they're talking about, but they don't really know.To you beginners: This information can easily be found on the internet for free. But it would be hard to find it all in one place. The knowledge contained in this book is good and reliable. This could make a good quick reference guide; since it contains basic info on just about everything you need to know when taking up climbing. I liked that they included, towards the end, some advice on how to approach climbing mentally and emotionally.

Great primer that helped me to understand some basic concepts and vernacular. Highly recommended for newbies, like me ;) Well written, organized with pics. Overall, great book!

What a cute little bedtime book--and about just the perfect subject for bedtime, too. I have to confess that Green Eggs and Ham is my all-time favorite, followed by The Cat In The Hat. But this one is quickly becoming a favorite with my 3-year old granddaughter and even my 6 month old granddaughter (who probably just likes the attention instead of the subject matter.) Like all Dr. Seuss books, it is illustrated with fantastical imagery in unrealistic but bright colors.In his typical rhythmic rhyming style (which I just found out is actually anapestic tetrameter) Dr. Seuss recounts how all kinds of weird characters are preparing for bed and succumbing to sleep. It's the perfect book to read to children who understand the humor and fantasy of the story. It is even babies who can't understand what you're saying but will be lulled by the predictable rhythm of the speech pattern and the comfort of your voice. After a particularly busy or stressful day (such as getting-a-shot-day) my granddaughter loves to have a familiar voice read to her in the semi-darkness. As she begins to unwind, I just slow down the pace and tone down the volume and keep going until she's fast asleep.

I just started reading to my infant at night as she turned 2 months old. We started with the short version of this book, but it went too quickly and she would still be wide awake. Figuring she will be a book lover like her mommy (me), I pulled the full book off of her shelf 2 weeks ago. Our nightly routine now includes swaddling and snuggling in with this whimsical book. I have to admit, I am yawning by page 2 as those yawns are spreading! Without fail, my now 3 month old gives a huge sigh and smile by the time we get to the baboonas in fagoona lagoona... her little eyelids flutter and she falls asleep in the next page or two... but I keep reading, as I just love this book and the zillions of sleeping creatures!

My 3 year old is a huge Dr. Seuss fan. This was a wonderful addition to our collection.

This is a little different from the usual Dr Seuss book. It is actually designed to put your children to sleep with its constant yawning. Just remember to read it slowly. The biggest side effect is that you will start yawning yourself, which encourages the children to yawn.

Since my daughter was about 2 months old, I started reading her this every night. She started associating it with sleep and now it usually works when I am trying to get her down. Now that she is older, we read a variety of books, but the Sleep Book is our go-to when we really need to get her to go to bed. When she visits her grandparents, I always send it as it seems to be very comforting to her.

Oh my goodness! I can not say enough good about this book! It works wonders. It probably took 10 times of reading it before I actually got to the end of the book - my child and I would both fall asleep first! My kids, now half grown, still love to hear it. I always include this book in gifts for new moms and dads. My grown daughter took one to a youth camp she was working at all summer. She read it to whichever cabin she was in charge of for the night, and always had her cabin asleep before any of the other staff did. Once they found out her secret, the book was apt to disappear come night time! It is well worth buying and having either for your own kids or grandkids, or for gifts to others.

I had never heard of this Dr Seuss book! (I know, I know...) My daughter loves reading Dr Seuss books and we read them frequently for our nightly bedtime story. So when I was in search of a new one, this was an absolutely perfect fit! It's a tad longer than all of our other Dr. Seuss books and QUITE the tongue twister! This first time I read it was pretty funny. My daughter loves reading this book and she always asks for "the Sleep Book" when settling into her bed. It seems to truly work with putting the idea of sleep in her head and calms her down.

As with all Dr. Seuss, this book is fun to read with the unique rhyming style and is a hit with both me (a 36 yr old woman) and my 5 yr old son. As a matter of fact, reading about all those trillions of creatures asleep makes me want to crawl into bed myself.This book is the perfect way to get a usually unwilling child to go to sleep. Kids don't like to think they're the ONLY ones going to sleep and this book does an excellent job letting them know that all creatures great and small are sleeping too.The length seems like a lot for short attention spans, but with the pace of the rhyming, it goes faster than you think!I highly recommend this book for everyone. Kids, adults, and collectors alike.

Great bedtime book. My favorite part of the book is when the contagious yawns start spreading. The book provides a news update as everyone begins to fall asleep. As the books continues the count of sleeping creatures grows. I love this because often children don't want to go to sleep because they fear they are missing out on all the fun. The book informs the reader that everyone else is pretty much asleep, so they might as well join in. Charming, book. However, I would recommend it for children who are maybe 3 and up. My daughter is 2 and I struggled to keep her attention. She does better with 4-6 words per page (Go Dog Go or Ear Book).Update: To help with the attention span I only read the first two lines of each page. She LOVES it. She calls it the YAWN book. :) As we read it, she starts yawning. By the end she jumps into bed and says "Good night." I caught her "reading" it during her nap today. :)

Note: This review, as well as many more, can also be found on my blog, The Baking Bookworm (www.thebakingbookworm.blogspot.ca).My Review: As you can see from my reading history on GoodReads or on my blog I'm not a big non-fiction reader so it should come as no shock that I didn't happen upon this book by myself. I learned of it from a friend of mine who had read another book in the series and she had quite positive reviews of it. I had never heard of or read any of Chapman's previous "Love Languages" books but the premise intrigued me.As many of you know I have one teen and two tweens at home. Let's just say that the household hormones runneth over. Over the past couple of years as Boy 1 entered teendom I've noticed differences in how we interact with each other and they're not always as positive as I would like. So I was eager to see if this book could give me a clearer view of what being a teen in 2013 is like for my son.Overall, I enjoyed this light read, learned a little and was reminded about a lot of parenting tools that I already had in my parenting arsenal. It reminded me of what it's like to be a teen -- how they feel, think etc and helped me to put some of my feelings/reactions into perspective (like not to feel hurt or put out when my teen wants/needs time to himself and doesn't necessarily want to hang with dear old mom). Deep down I knew that but a little reminder was needed.The notion of Chapman's five love languages is an interesting concept. As I read the book I started to look at my kids differently. Each of my kids have different 'love languages' so I tried, over the past few weeks, to figure out how to reach each them with their unique love languages. Boy 1 is not one for hugs (never has been). To reach him I had to stop using so much Physical Love (one of my main love languages) -- hugs, hair ruffling, kisses on the cheek -- and start using Words of Affirmation to get through to him. He responded to me better and you know what? He's actually become more OK with my occasional hugs. Who knew, right?Now Boy 2 is a different ball of wax all together. Boy 2 truly speaks the love language of Physical Touch with his love of snuggling, hugging 'just cuz' and how he likes to sit close to Brad and I even while just watching TV. It's always been easy for Boy 2 and I to show love because we kind of come from the same love language page, so to speak.Missy Moo's love language is definitely Quality Time. She adores having Brad or I to herself for some one-on-one time. Three different kids, three different ways to show them that I love them. So, by not showing each of my kids love using their own love language I may not have been imparting my love clearly to them. That was an 'a-ha' moment for me. Ultimately, by focusing on what my kids need/want from me I do feel that we have had a much calmer household over the past few weeks.Throughout the book Chapman clearly describes the mindset of teens, how they may be feeling and what they need in order to feel loved during a very emotional and stressful age. He uses a fairly strong Christian base to his teachings with several Biblical/Christian references being made throughout the book. A couple of times it almost took on a preachy vibe but overall I don't think non-Christians will mind the references.Is this the most concise parenting book I’ve read? No. I did find the book overly long for the amount of information that was provided and feel it could have been cut down quite a bit without losing the information given. And while there is good information provided, many of the parenting techniques aren't anything new but can be used to remind parents of things that they knew all along but needed a refresher in.One of the 'refreshers' that I needed was quite simple but made me do a mental forehead smack when I read it.You can't parent a teen the same way you parented them when they were a child.The rules change. The boy who did as he was told as a child is now arguing and pushing boundaries at every turn because he wants to become his own person. Pushing away from Mom and Dad is what's supposed to happen as teens learn to 'go it alone' more and more without Mom and Dad hovering over them to ensure that nothing bad happens. That said, rules and boundaries are just as important now as they were when he was younger.Rules, consequences and boundaries must be set in advance and be clear and consistent so everyone knows what's expected and what will happen if boundaries are crossed. This involves a lot of communication and respect all around. I liked the fact that this book doesn't sugar coat things and encourages parents to allow their kids to feel the consequences of their actions. Mom and Dad don't need to ride in on a white horse to save the day if Junior's decision ends badly. The teens, after making their own decisions, have to face the consequences, good or bad, just as they will when they're adults.I take away from this book a few new tidbits of parenting wisdom to make my parenting arsenal that much stronger. Encouraging independence is something that Brad and I have always done with our kids but as Boy 1 begins to push farther than my comfort zone is comfortable with I can look back at this book and realize that it's OK for me to let go of the reigns (just a little). Allow him to stumble, make decisions (even when I don't agree) and begin to pull away from Brad and I to become his own person. Hard to do but oh so necessary because in the end creating independent, self-sufficient, caring and compassionate adults who know they are loved is the end result of parenting.Recommended.My Rating: 3.5/5 stars

The book was pretty good, it had some valid points and learning that there are different ways that people express their love was important. What I think pulled away from the book was the underlying religious agenda to preach about God. It totally turned me off And I thought it was completely unnecessary to deliver the message. Of course if you are a religious person then this would be right up your alley.

I stopped reading at the part where the author recommended a woman to sleep with her husband against her will. WTF? Highly triggering for sexual abuse and domestic violence survivors.Also, the book reads like it’s written for white Christians. And for men who don’t want a partnership, but rather want to coerce their wife into being their sexually subservient housemaid/servant because they just don’t like vacuuming and can‘t afford hiring a cleaner („I thought I get myself a wife for that“).So if you’re a white Christian man or woman who likes to be a little housewife, yes, this book‘s for you.Besides that, the book offers solid scientific facts such as man‘s sex drive being dominated biologically by sperm pressure; that women‘s sex drive is purely emotional and not driven by their bodies; and more.

I have just started to read this book. In the Acknowledgments, I noticed this, "If all wives loved as she does, fewer men would be looking over the fence." How about "If all husbands loved as he does, fewer women would be looking over the fence."? I am serious.

It is definitely a good book for couples and it has improved my relationship with my wife. If nothing else it shows you what things your partner is really looking for out of their spouse. I quickly found that my love language was "Acts of Service". Though it might not be sexy or macho to say that, it means more to me to have the dishes and laundry done when I come home after work or have minor home improvements taken care of before I get home. My wife and I have 2 small children and our house is hard to stay clean because every room feels like a mess. We do clean it all the time but it feels like a losing battle. My wife's love language is "Words of Affirmation". As you can tell from all these Amazon reviews I am much more of a writer than I am a talker. My wife is always looking for me to say how much I love and appreciate her because I don't say it often enough.A big part of improving your relationship with your spouse or boyfriend/girlfriend is to sticking with a date night to make sure you have quality time together. Especially if you have children or a high stress occupation. My wife and I have been together for 10 years and got stuck in the rut of an endless routine of doing everything we could for our kids, followed by daily chores and left little time for ourselves. Committing to 1 date night a week has really helped our relationship and improved our communication.I recommend the book for sure and found it inspiring and worth reading. All couples can benefit from reading this book. The only downside is I wish it could have been a little longer. The stories from the author are interesting and I would have liked to have heard a bunch of his other examples of couples that he has dealt with. It was a short book and my wife and I finished it in 4 or 5 days and that was reading it slowly. The price is easily affordable. I found it best to photo copy the test quiz at the end instead of writing in the book so we can give the book to any family or friends who are struggling with their relationship.

As a lower rated club player, I have needed a book that provides inside into how to plan and organize. This is it, finally. It reads easily and explains concepts in terms a lower rated club play can grasp without having to study like a final exam. I would recommend this for any club player beyond a beginner. You must have intermediate skills and knowledge of chess to make the book work for you. This is one of those keepers that every club player should eventually have on her/her shelf. I wish I would have had it years ago. It will be one of those that will provide great reference and guidance for years to come, especially to club players. The book is written so well that reading and studying the concepts within seem more effortless than most chess books. My suggestion is buy it, enjoy learning from it, and keep it handy for future reference. It is an absolute keeper!

This is personally one of my top 5 chess books, if not top 3. I can see where grooten is a wonderful coach he's updated or refreshed Steinitz line of thought and brought it up to date. I feel like when I read this book your being coached by Grooten himself .Understandable, explainable and a clear cut instructional guide. This book for me is staying around til I wear it out then i'll buy it again. I do know that this book has helped my game out a lot. Buy it, you want regret it

Make no mistake, if you're a club player that wants to have all the basic teachings related to Steinitz in one book, there probably is no better book around that systematically goes through the material. It is ironic that the publisher "New In Chess" published this book because most of the ideas are 100 years old. With that said, you can win a ton of games with these ideas and players over the last 100 have done just that.The book primarily uses game and game fragments to illustrate the execution of strategic plans and reaction of those plans to the opponent's moves. It is quite obvious that Grooten is very experienced chess coach and I'd gladly take a lesson from him any time. With that said, this book is a bargain at less than 20 dollars for all the valuable information in the book. It really is a one stop shop for a complete Steinitz principles.With that said, I did give the book only four stars and it was for a reason. There were times when Grooten simply does not ask enough questions to really penetrate the finer strategic points of a position. Translating that into chess terms, he doesn't look for the really challenging moves in certain positions and then provide a clear and coherent positional assessment on why one side is better. In fact, very few authors have the ability to really elucidate why one side is better but instead provide assertions with no proof. This is a shortcoming of this book as well, albeit a minor one. Also, there were times during the book when the author presented the material as if he had been the original discover. Theory of two weaknesses was one such example. I know that he was simply trying to exhibit how HE discovered it, but plenty of material is already devoted to exploiting two weaknesses dating back to at least Nimzowitch. This could have been a problem with the translation from Dutch to English, but I'm not quite sure. Finally, certain subjects are just glossed over with limited discussion. This is forgivable because the book is already 400 pages and I'm sure that the publisher has something to say about a 700 page book for something under 20 dollars.In summary, this is an excellent book for those who are good at self study. It actually is even decent for those who like ideas and information spoon fed to them much in the vain of Pandolfini. I would highly recommend this book to anyone really interested in understanding the basic principles so they can later on understand the exceptions (which is what Grandmasters do in almost every one of their games because they are tactically skilled and understand that dynamic chess is the part of the Steinitz school that really wasn't integrated very well). So, go and by with the confidence that if you spend time really systematically reading this book, the strategic ideas will become second nature.

I have a love-hate relationship with this book. I love it because it is far-and-away the single best strategy and position-assessment book I have read. I hate it because it could have been so much better, and Grooten is certainly good enough to have made it better in the ways that I think it could have been better. Since the review is 5-stars, you can stop here and consider my recommendation for this book superlative. However, I am going to start out by saying what was wrong with the book, after which I will talk about what’s so great.The negative comments made in some of the other reviews are spot on, such as the lack of organization of the book. I really felt like some publisher or editor saw an instant classic in the works and rushed it to sale for the sake of dollar signs. The biggest substantial problem with the book, which truly indicates to me that it was either rushed by an editor/published or for the sake of winning a chess book of the year award is that there are many, many critical places in the text where Grooten doesn’t answer this simple question: why? I don’t think there’s a chapter where Grooten says something, makes some assessment, or the like, and takes the reasoning as tacit. I’m becoming very strong amateur player (officially USCF tournament peak of 1608, and probably getting close to A-class or Expert strength), and I’ve absolutely never had this problem before. This problem isn’t so chronic that it ruins the book. Grooten is definitely teaching a great many things, but the punch line from a number of mini-lessons is simply missing. I’ve been training with a GM, so he’s been able to fill me in on what Grooten was trying to say. I think this all could have been avoided by having an A-class or Expert read the book, so that he or she could let him know that there was some critical piece of explanation missing. There is a general explanatory problem in a couple of his chapters, such as the one on piece harmony, in which case a little bit more detail was needed on a few points; but this is not as big a concern as the previous concern. Another big issue with the book is that some of Grooten’s examples have multiple themes working, not just the one that is being emphasized. In fact, sometimes the emphasized theme isn’t the most important aspect of the example. This could have been rectified by picking less complex examples where the theme is exhibited in greater isolation –and this can be a problem very easily, given the holistic nature of chess, with all the intertangled themes in so many positions. Grooten also contradicts some notable authors on a few things, and probably didn’t realize it, and so he never explained. For example, in the chapter on passed-pawns, he talks about the side with the passed-pawn wanting to exchange the minor pieces. What? Lev Alburt and Jeremy Silman both said that minor piece push and halt passed-pawns, so keep them on the board! I did not think for a minute that Grooten was wrong, but that there was something different about Grooten’s examples and those of Alburt and Silman’s. The difference was how advanced the pawns are. With a space advantaged generated by a far passed-pawns, activity of the opposing pieces are reduced if those pieces are rooks rather than knights and bishops. (Notice how I’ve just mentioned that space and activity are thematic in this chapter, though it is supposed to be about the passed-pawn.) It took me and my coach about an hour to examine Grooten’s, Silman’s, and Alburt’s examples to figure out what the deal was. All of the other issues I had with the book are much less than these.What’s great about the book? The book is structure around Steinitz’ elements; which is to say, the objective and idea behind the book is really solid, and it lends to the effectiveness of the text. I also think that the book is enjoyably written –Grooten is anything but a boring writer, so that should not be a concern. I’ve read a number of strategy and position-assessment books, and this is by far the best. This area of chess is lacking in quantity and quality literature. In a space almost exclusively dominated by a few classics, this book is the most in-depth and expansive book I have come across. The amount of quality ideas and content this book contains is unreal; it really is. Not only that, I think it serves a large field of readers. Ideally, I think the book is best for 1600-2200, but it is very easily accessible to any player under 800. Even at a USCF rating of 800, a great many of the concepts this book teaches can be assimilated. The thing is that, as with all classics, the book requires reading and re-reading. I am very confident that, with each pass through this book, I will develop much more knowledge than I previously possessed. For the unclarity that some parts of Grooten’s text suffers in some places, it more than makes up for in other places. That’s why I am disappointed in some regards, because most of the book is simple exceptional and crystal clear. To give you some idea, if you thought “Chess for Post-Beginners” by Srokovsky was good, this one is world’s better. In fact, that book purports to be aimed at players 1400-2200 (and it’s received rave reviews), yet the analysis in this book is much deeper, more thorough, and the explanations a bit lengthier for clarity.One thing that should be noted is that this is a difficult book in a number of ways. Grooten even says that the reader should not sweat it if he or she does not get the solutions to exercises. One friend, a very positional 1500-level USCF player, said that the book was tough but manageable. A very tactical player (1850’s USCF) and friend, who is weak positionally, said that the book was extremely tough. For me, I thought the book was challenging because Grooten sometimes assumes that you see the tactics that are forcing situations. Finding the tactics, whenever he doesn’t fill in the details, can be seen as a tactics puzzle. You can tell that this text is fairly high-level, because positional strength and weakness is tied in very closely with the tactics and threats required to achieve strategies; again, chess has a kind of holism at work.Excellent book. I recommend it to any player under 2200.
