About the Author

Dr Yacoub Yusuf Al-Hijji was born in old Kuwait City in 1947, and attended the American University of Beirut. Returning to Kuwait, he joined the government groundwater department as a geologist. Furthering his studies at University College, London, he then went to the United States, attaining his M.Sc. in hydrogeology from Ohio University, and his Ed.D. from Boston University. In 1983 he joined Kuwait University as faculty member. He currently works as a consultant at the Centre for Research and Studies on Kuwait (CRSK). Dr Al-Hijji is an authority on Kuwait's rich maritime heritage, and now devotes much of his time to its study. He has written several articles and books about it, in both Arabic and English, among them The Voyage of Al-Ghazeer and The Art of Dhow Building in Kuwait.

But few of us know the Kuwait before oil: essentially a tiny, walled town called al-Qurain, surrounded by desert, bereft of natural resources, which turned to the sea and built a prospering economy based on the fruits of the Gulf and a long-distance maritime trade that extended to East Africa and the Indian subcontinent.Dr. Al-Hijji trained as a geologist specializing in water resources. He is now recognized as an expert on Kuwait's maritime history. He traces his interest to his childhood, growing up beside the Kuwait city waterfront. He spent many years researching this book - interviewing nakhodas (ship captains), merchants, mariners and shipbuilders.The author paints a vivid picture of a very different world. It was a parched environment, where life-giving supplies of fresh water had to be drawn from the Shatt al-Arab waterway and brought to Kuwait in great wooden tanks aboard even greater dhows.Before oil, jobs were hard to find. Almost all the able-bodied men in the town signed up as pearl divers, for four long summer months, harvesting oysters in the hope of recovering gem-quality pearls. Pearl-diving has been romanticized in recent years, but the author disabuses us of this notion. It was a "season in hell," he says, with divers working through the blazing heat, taking ten dives in a row without a break, continuing their shifts from daybreak to sunset, from June to September.Pearling was a pillar of the Kuwaiti economy, but when the discovery of oil brought better jobs and the imperial Asian markets for pearls dried up, the industry shriveled and died.Another pillar was the long-distance dhow trade. As a professional tutor who specializes in ISEE and SSAT preparation in New York, London, and other cities around the world, I have spent countless hours with every book and resource published to help students prepare for entrance exams. To be honest, it seems like some of the bigger name publishers have not put enough careful thought into their ISEE and SSAT books. Since the ISEE has 3 separate levels, and children are at very different stages in their development when preparing for the different levels, the materials need to acknowledge this. Quite simply, in my experience, this author is the only one who has put forth such a careful effort. The layout of the book is user-friendly, and I appreciate the vocabulary lessons as they are very self-guided. The practice included in the content chapters is useful, because students need repetition of the various question types. As the ISEE is a secure test, and no previous tests are released, it is difficult for any publisher to completely get the test questions right. Some of my students have given me the feedback that this book is a little easier than the actual test, but as a tutor, I find this book indispensable. If a student needs harder material, we work our way up to that, but this book is definitely the place to start! I recommend it without question to every student I teach.

Some of the test taking strategies were helpful, as were the practice questions. My main criticisms are that the sample test is easier than the real test, there are many typos (including in the sample test), and the format of the answer sheet is not the same (or even similar) to a real scantron type answer sheet. For children who are preparing for their first ever standardized test, learning how to fill out those little bubbles is actually an important skill to practice. The answer sheet provided should be as similar in format as possible.I did appreciate that this book was focused on the lower level ISEE, unlike most test books, which include all levels and focus on the high school test.

We really like this book for ISEE test prep. The math section and verbal reasoning sections are excellent test prep. We have not worked through the Reading Comp yet but I liked the section that covers RC because it reassures children and provides tips and strategies that I believe will be helpful. We have enjoyed working on this book through the summer and plan to continue up until the test. I like the vocabulary drills. I think they are very helpful and like how the words are grouped with similar words that might appear on the test. This is probably my favorite ISEE lower level test prep book. I prefer it to the 30 Days to Lower Level ISEE test prep book which is less comprehensive and harder for a child to work through on their own.

Excellent overview of techniques and approaches to tackle each type of question on the lower level ISEE. It's a fantastic starting point to preparation - understand the key question types, understand approaches for tackling them, and go through worked examples.Highly recommend starting your preparation with this book and then leaning into books with 1000 questions or focused on your key areas.

For what its worth... my homeschooled eighth grader used this study guide and scored in the 85th percentile or higher in every category. Seems to work!

I agree with the previous reviews. The book is thorough and written on the student level, unlike all other test prep books available. My son likes it and goes through it with very little help from me. It is focused entirely on the lower level and has one full practice test in addition to more practice with every lesson. I find it more useful and more pleasant to study from, than any other books on ISEE. The practice lessons are not tedious and boring as in other books.

I am finding this series pretty addictive. Generally, when reading a series, I prefer to space it out with other books; with this one, I am going from one to the next.Coyote was well-represented here, as are various other gods etc. The books do have somewhat of a pantheon-of-the-volume nature- but Hearne handles this well, and that aspect of taking polytheism seriously is one of the things I love here.Of course- there's lots of action, and a reasonable level of snark. I do think the snarky dialogs between Atticus and his dog could be diminished with no ill effects; more and more, Oberon is not mapping to a dog, despite his passion for sausages. It was better when he was more canine, and less into pop culture. Seriously, I have a dog, and she is NOT into pop culture!Still a fun series, especially for polytheists.

I am afraid that I do not feel that this book series is improving. One of the things that makes these books fun to read are the fairly hilarious dialogue between Atticus and his wolfhound Oberon and, luckily, this is still there. Unfortunately this is pretty much the only enjoyable element of this book and even this is somewhat diminished by Oberon being disabled for a good chunk of the book. Sure, Atticus and Granuaile are not too bad together but anyway, some lines of fun dialogue do not make a book alone.The story in this book is fairly ludicrous and contrived. Apart from a few paragraphs at the beginning it does not really advance the main story very much. This I could live with if it did not feel like this story is mostly an ill contrived filler. Worse is that it seems to be put together only to give the author an opportunity to do some preaching about environmental issues and native indian affairs. The semi-bad guy Coyote wants to build windmills and solar power plants. Atticus goes away like some uber-hippie sabotaging coal mines and Granuaile reveals that she wanted to become druid to avenge some relative that is in the oil business? What the f…? That’s just a load of things coming out of the rear end of a bull and certainly not what I want to read about in a book.Even without these elements the story would not have been very good. We are talking about a 2000 year old druid who is tricked like a schoolboy by Coyote. Not funny. It is a shame really. This 2000 year old thing is really what intrigued me to start the series and could have been used to good effect but it really has just been wasted so far in these books.These books have all been quite light reading and I was not expecting much in terms of plot but at this point I have serious doubts as to whether I want to continue this series. I am stubborn and really really do not like not to finish a book series that I have started so I probably will but the next instalment better be an improvement over this one.

It would be hard to top the last book with its quest into Asgard to kill Thor!and this book's plot is more modest, as is its body count. The pleasure of the humor and the magical, mythological world, however, are as strong as ever. Atticus is tricked by Coyote into battling skinwalkers and we're treated to a course in Native American spirituality. One complaint: I didn't think the Coyote and the vampire stories melded together very well. Usually Hearn's subplots intertwine nicely and come together at the end, but these two seemed somehow too disparate. A small niggle, though, and I loved the end with Atticus and Oberon running through the fields and rolling in the clover. I cannot tell you how wonderful it feels to run when you no longer have to do it.

Okay, I admit it, I am a sucker for any writer who can bring an Irish Wolfhound to life and make him a believable and important character in their series. Oberon even has Dresden's Mouse beat since he has not trouble communicating! Other than the powerful dog medicine, Hearn has created a quick paced, high octane urban fantasy series with all the magic and mayhem one could ask for. While I am not so sure that gods are as easy to take out as they seem to be in these books, I am more than willing to suspend disbelief and go along for the ride.

I believe I can say in all honesty that Tricked is my favorite Iron Druid Chronicles book so far. Let me see if I can even come close to explaining why....First and foremost, Oberon. If you have been keeping up with the Iron Druid Chronicles you know exactly what I mean. Oberon has been present in every book, but he has definitely been scarce in the last couple of installments. I definitely got my Oberon fix in Tricked, and trust me, that's a very good thing. I started marking the quote worthy Oberon passages and realized after a couple of chapters that it was useless. Every Oberon passage was quote worthy and this book is packed full of them. *happy sigh*The other thing that I think really caught my attention in this one was the change of venue. True, the other books had taken Atticus to different locals, but this book marked a total change. He and Granuaile escaped their familiar surroundings and their journey began with Atticus' death. Strange, but true and things just kept getting more strange and more interesting from there.As with most adventures involving Atticus, nothing is quite what it seems and no one is exactly who they appear to be. Tricked was a book that definitely kept you on the edge of your seat. There was action, betrayal, humor, some sadness a bit of mystery and more than enough danger to keep things interesting. I loved every minute of it (well, except for the sad parts because they really were very sad.)I've always been totally engrossed in the Iron Druid World once I pick up a book. Even though things ended fairly well for Atticus and company at the end of Tricked, I really can't wait to pick up the next book. Lucky for me, Trapped is ready and waiting on my shelf. (Of course I may have to pick up Two Ravens and One Crow and maybe even The Demon Barker of Wheat Street [from CarniePunk] before I delve into the next full length book... just to make sure I'm not missing anything important.)

Ok, don't buy this book as a general "lean office" book - it's not that. It's ALL about mapping a value stream, running projects based on the value stream, and using VSM as the management tool for a lean office. I like that, but I felt that this book spends far too much time focused on the one tool, and doesn't emphasize that it's one tool that is part of an overall management system that will just require more.Pros:- Excellent, thorough, breakdown of VSM in the office- Focused entirely on an office/service environment. It's not a retread with "manufacturing" replaced with "service" like some books.- Visual, with excellent pictures and examples throughoutCons:- Only emphasizes one tool- The wastes discussion was weak compared to other office books - I found several others to cover them much more thoroughly, with better examples.

I found this to be a good book on translating the tools of manufacturing to an office environment. It communicates all of the basics that are required.I've attended one of this consulting group's manufacturing classes. I found them to be dead on. I like the way they handled the accounting/cost/metric relationship to lean production. Basically, the current accounting standards will cause you to do things in opposition to what lean principles will have you do.In some other office scenarios, I think this more traditional approach will not have all the pieces or tools required. I work in an industry where order entry is significantly more complex than the examples presented, a much higher degree of interaction with other players is required, and rework loops are significant part of the process (customer driven rework). ANITECH has an approach that tracks the information flow surrounding the work process, while applying the same lean techniques that are presented in this book.Tracking the information flow provides an opportunity to sort out, automate, and lean out that information flow. There is tremendous leverage in this concept.

This book has good information in it. It repeats alot of the information over and over again. It's worth a quick read.

This is the kind of guide you need to get started together with professional help from outside your organization. As they say, there are no Lean experts, only more experienced people - it shows that Tom Shuker belongs to this category.

"Value Stream Management for the Lean Office" provides a clear and uncomplicated approach to implementing lean in an administrative environment. At $45 for 150 pages of text it is pricey, but is it worth it ? That, I think, depends on your need. On the plus side the book is very clearly written and lays out a step by step route to lean in the office. Mapping forms and charts to use are presented on the accompanying CD-ROM. It is a straightforward approach which might well suit a fairly small office environment with processes that are not too complicated. However, "simple" can easily become "simplistic" and the book does not adequately cover the issues pertaining in a large or complex environment, with lots of interaction between departments, people or activities. In addition the book provides very little background to lean and no discussion of the philosophy on which lean rests. Thus the book lists stages and actions without giving the reader an understanding of the reasoning or concepts behind lean.If you have a straightforward office environment, perhaps in a small business, then this book should help you. If your needs are more complex, then you should probably look elsewhere.

This book is really hard to be rated. Knowing already about JIT/Lean and especially about QRM-approach, I was looking for a book about value stream mapping and office operations to get started (beginner).First of all, lets start to take a look what I found helpful about this book. The book provides good information about related issues as pitch, heijunka, selecting product-families for determining common processes (known to people with part grouping experiences etc.) and especially about the required project-management.On the other side the book is weak about explaining the VSM technique itself. This is mainly related to the example chosen, which I found hard to understand and not very helpful. E.g. the key about data to be collected - to describe every process-step itself as L/T, processing time and many more - is only weak described. Without this, you might be able to draw your VSM, but the later good overview/ visualization and optimization opportunity is lost. This can be done much better!Books as e.g. Complete Lean Enterprise do a much better job here and the example of a company used is much better to explain VSM for people working in industrial environment. Reading this book is easy and understandable - straight forward!As a beginner in this area, I therefore stick to the book Complete Lean Enterprise and for some special issues, I sometimes use this book rated here. This book here looks a little bit like a summary of lots of important different points about VSM, but I'm personally in favore of books based on simple and realistic examples where text and figures can be simply followed. Without the additional and helpful information provided in this book, I would have given it a rating of 2 stars or even less..Best Regards,Oliver

After writing a book about attending business school, then one about the founders of the Internet, and then a sci-fi comedy; Rob Reid stays true to form by avoiding any form with his new book, After On. Reading a pre-release copy, I had no spoiler effect from book blurbs or reviews so I kept wondering - is it a thriller, a near future sci-fi, or maybe a horror novel? It turns out to be a bit of each, combined to create a great story while raising fundamental, and sometimes frightening, concerns about humanity's technological path. He mixes today’s cutting edge tech with current social, legal and engineering directions and it can be unnerving.For people in the tech world, characters they know will frequently emerge. Or characters they think they know. Zuba is my favorite, resembling some of the brightest people I’ve ever met. I’m trying to not identify too closely to some of the scum characters, but they are not really farfetched. And Pugwash lives! (Don’t try to parse.)Finishing the story leaves you second-guessing all kinds of current research and services. Is this site's Terms of Service really acceptable at all? What choice have we? How far lost is our legal system? How irrelevant or just misguided is our government? Should we clamp down on tech now? How could we? How much of a crap shoot is our future really? Not food for thought, more like a banquet.The idea of a super AI has some very smart people alarmed. Stephen Hawking warned, “The development of full artificial intelligence could spell the end of the human race.” Elon Musk mused that “we are summoning the demon.” Read After On for an alternative scenario.Disclosure: Rob’s a friend, I read an early copy, and I'm enjoying the final version.

I must start by apologizing to my wife. I kept waking her up by truly laughing out loud while reading After On. Reid has a brilliant way of creating funny situations while introducing the reader to a lot of what's next on the minds of futurists in technology and biology (and where those two meet). He wraps a story around Artificial Intelligence, Synthetic Biology and Quantum Computing that is fun, exciting and funny, and might just scare you as you think about our not too distant future.

YUCK. I honestly have nothing good to say about this book, except that perhaps the rest of it that I didn't read (I had to quit in the middle of it) might have been amazing. I doubt it though.This novel simply tries too hard and fails miserably. It reminds me of the show Silicon Valley (if you love that show for non-humor related reasons, you might like this novel). If you're in the tech industry, you can tell it's trying too hard and in attempting to recreate the culture and atmosphere, it results in a horrendously contrived mishmash of lame references and jokes. Example: "acquihire." If you're the industry or know anything about it, you'll roll your eyes at this in the novel, as the author presents it as something unique. It's maddening.The writing is somewhat sophomoric, as are the jokes. Worst of all, it's terribly boring.0.5/10 (I believe this is the lowest score I've ever given)

These days we hear luminaries from Stephen Hawking to Elon Musk debate whether AI will become humanity's greatest achievement or final catastrophe. But no one has ever predicted the scenario that unfolds in After On. But once you read it, it dawns on you that it might just unfold this way -- in a future full of brilliance, absurdity, pettiness, sex, and hilarity. You won't ever check Facebook with innocence again. And Facebook just found its next playbook.

I ain't no Charles Henry Higginsworth III..., but I LOVED this book! If you caught that reference you have surely already read this book... If not, read the damn book so you DO get the reference (kind of a Catch 22 proposition)!So now in an effort to make this review more traditional/helpful, let me say this... I LOVE this book (oh wait, I already said that). Like Rob Reid's last book, "Year Zero" I was so intrigued by the story and the audio incarnation of the book that I actually bought and read the printed version (no eBook baby... The real thing). The book starts off very self-aware. It even challenges you to finish the 570 pages that it takes to complete the story. It is a bit slow to start and pointless in some places, but stick with it and finish it. There is a method to the madness (and pointlessness)I was delighted to see that "After On" takes place in the same universe as "Year Zero" yet is in no way a sequel or even a prequel. It was fun to see several characters from "Year Zero" pop up in the story as well, but if you have never read the previous book, it would not hinder your enjoyment of this thought-provoking book.As much as I love the book, I am curious to see how it will stand over time. Being a work of speculative fiction in the immediate present, it could date itself very quickly, but I do not think so. There are a few very ham-fisted literary tricks that amount to not much more than gimmicks sprinkled throughout the story, but they are not so intrusive as to ruin the book in the slightest. It's a little bit slow to Build, but rest assured, very little time is wasted. Every bit of it is important to the story. Apparently throwaway observations/comments do come back at the end to play in important part in the resolution of the storyline.

Great to-the-point book. This book has a lot of citations and references from other books that have been condensed into one quick easy to read book on the basics of intermittent fasting. I like that I was able to quickly get what I needed from it. I've started reading some of the books that were referenced, but I was able to quickly start intermittent fasting thanks to this book. I lost 20 pounds in the first three months (with two vacations thrown in there), and I am continuing to lose. It is seriously the easiest thing I've ever done. Thanks to the author for such guide to IF!

Author has a way of breaking things down so that it is very practical which makes it super easy to incorporate IF smoothly into your daily life. Things like this should be handled not as a diet but lifestyle change. The concepts are broken down in a way that's easy to read and informative.This book has a ton of information into the history and science of fasting.The author gives us the seven most popular methods of Intermittent Fasting and explains how to use it to get better results from exercise. In this book I found lots of helpful information about Intermittent Fasting.I highly recommend this book. Intermittent fasting!

This is one of the best books on intermittent fasting and clearly explains why IF works for fat loss and curing diseases. So, if you're overweight, obese, thin on the outside fat on the inside... or you're pre-diabetic or type 2 diabetic already, or you have high blood pressure, or you've tried every diet known to mankind, here is your answer: intermittent fasting.

The lauguage in this book makes the science of weight loss and body transformation very easy to understand and follow.. I liked that the author presents principles, rules/guidelines and real life examples that allow me to make my own informed plan. I feel like I finally can cure the weight problems and guide others to do so as well. Huge thanks to the author

Also, these methods of fasting can be used to improve health, get rid of some neurological and hormonal diseases, increase the energy level of the body. In general, a useful diet.

You won’t learn much more than you would on a Google search of intermittent fasting. Super repetitive. Nothing is cited. Women are warned against it but little is explained about why.

I did a lot of research before buying books on fasting, and this one came highly recommended. I enjoyed reading it and the message resonated with me. I also read authors book on obesity and, between these two books, feel my life is about to change for the better. Recommen it! Well done!

Lovely! Nice to have it! Originally I borrowed this book from our library. There are so many fantastic recipes in this book that I had to buy my own copy. I love the way that there are helpful comments throughout the book. THis collection has helped me use my slow cooker to its potential instead of just for stews. Great book!I couldn't recommend it enough, it makes managing mealtimes for a busy family a breeze. Take the time to read the foreward because it does explain some very useful insights into why things may or may not work. Amazing book! Well done

First and foremost, a proper disclosure: I was originally signed by Packt Publishing to write this book. Having failed to meet their schedule, Packt re-signed the book with the current authors and asked me to review the book during writing. I have reviewed the first couple of chapters and returned my comments, none of which were integrated in the book, nor have I received any additional chapters for review. My Amazon customer review may therefore seem biased, but I do hope the advised reader will take note and deduce, on her own accord, whether or not that is the case.And now my Amazon customer review:In the preface of the book, the section dubbed "Errata" starts with the following sentence: "Although we have taken every care to ensure the accuracy of our content, mistakes do happen". This is a rather standard statement in many technical books, and should be taken into account whenever a reader finds a mistake in the content. I find it hard to treat the book seriously though, having gone through the process of reviewing the first two chapters prior to the books publication, and ending up reading almost the exact same text in the published material, as what I have received for review and commented on.An example of such mistake that appears in the published book appears at the middle of chapter 1. In the section dubbed "Implement the SAXPY routine in OpenCL", the authors provide a code listing for an ANSI-C implementation of saxpy:void saxpy(int n, float a, float *b, float *c){ for (int i = 0; i < n; ++i) y[i] = a*x[i] + y[i];}I'm not trying to nitpick here, but this code will not compile under any C compiler, unless x and y are globally defined elsewhere, in which case the function will probably not accomplish the intended purpose. Of course it is clear that this is an editorial error, where x and y should have been b and c (or vise verse), but the fact that I commented on this while reviewing the chapter, and the error prevailed to the published version, sheds the promise of "we have taken every care to ensure the accuracy of our content" in a bad light.I would have been OK with the book if this was the only type of errors I found in it, but unfortunately they're not. The book contains a lot of information that newcomers to OpenCL, and to parallel programming in general will find interesting. It is too bad however that this information is flawed, and in some cases gives the impression that the authors, although undoubtedly used and are using OpenCL, fail to fully grasp some of the concepts or delicacies presented by the standard. Add to that the rather poor English grammar conveyed in the book (Packt's English editors were especially sloppy here), and you got yourself a recipe for producing misguided beginner programmers.Some examples are required to emphasis this claim. I'll give some from the 1st chapter, because if this early such mistakes are made, the following is of lesser importance.The 2nd paragraph in chapter 1 draws from Wikipedia's definition of parallel computing. It concludes with the following phrasing: "... large problems can often be divided into smaller ones, which are then solved concurrently (in parallel)". It is important to distinguish between the terms "parallel" and "concurrent". Although one would strive that her different "smaller" tasks run concurrently, that isn't always feasible, even as these are parallel tasks. Parallel is a logical term, describing the state of two (or more) task, having the theoretical ability of being executed at the same time. Concurrency is a physical term describing the target hardware's ability to execute parallel tasks. Parallel computing therefore, by no means, suggests that these parallel tasks will be executed concurrently.I will skip a few paragraphs, namely the rather odd list of parallel programming models in which the authors makes several errors regarding the "pros" and "cons" he chooses to list for each, and his decisions to put these models in comparison when they inherently target different levels of parallelism (local, heterogeneous systems, and distributed systems), and when these models are usually used in conjunction to one another, and complement one another, rather than compete.In the section dubbed "Introduction to OpenCL" the authors claim "OpenCL gives developers a common set of easy-to-use tools...". This is false. OpenCL provides two things, and two things only: an API (divided into two layers) which allows a host processor to manage and coordinate computations across different target devices within the system, and a programming language named OpenCL C, which the developer uses in order to write the code that will be executed on these devices. No tools. More than that, the authors are clearly confused as in a later section dubbed "OpenCL program flow" he falsely writes " An OpenCL C host code does the following...". As mentioned above, OpenCL C is used for programming the devices, whereas the host utilized the OpenCL API.I can actually list more problems found in chapter 1, but I hope that at this point you got the point. This actually gets worse in the following chapters where the authors describe the 4 models presented by the OpenCL standard. Just a small example for a mistake in the text: the authors claim "For high performance every OpenCL device has an associated local memory. This is the memory closest to the OpenCL processing element". This is false, as OpenCL does not define how local memory is to be implemented, and therefore some vendors choose to implement it over the same physical banks of their global memory (which means it operates at the same latency as global memory - providing no performance gains). Local memory with regards to OpenCL, has no performance considerations. These are the domain of device-specific targeting. As you may by now suspect, the list of false claims is much longer, but I will not indulge in it at this time.On a positive note, the set of examples provided in the book (and some are actually pretty good) allows the authors to demonstrate the usage of key concepts in OpenCL programming, which leads me to believe the authors are indeed experienced users of OpenCL, although lack a deep understanding of the different aspects of the standard (they should be, as the lead author is an AMD employee, working on OpenCL code optimizations).The bottom line is simple: if you are serious about learning OpenCL programming - keep away from this book. Not because it doesn't give good examples, but because it is filled with misguided, and at times simply wrong information, both in background topics, but also, and perhaps more concerning, the actual matter of the OpenCL standard. Do yourself a favor and pick a copy of "OpenCL in Action" (published by: Manning Publications), or "Heterogeneous Computing with OpenCL" (published by: Morgan Kaufmann), or even "The OpenCL Programming Guide" (published by: Addison-Wesley Professional), which closely resembles the standard (written by some of the standard editors...), before you pick this book.

Having read only the first chapter of this book, I learned something very important: how to return a Kindle e-book. I really should have taken Liad Weinberger's review more seriously and passed on this volume. Given that my goal with this book was to learn OpenCL, I'm not qualified to comment on the authors' technical exposition. Their prose, however, is just awful. I found it excruciating to read the first chapter, and that led me to question whether the authors' technical knowledge is as poor as their grammar. I returned this book and purchased a hard copy of "OpenCL in Action."One final nit I wish to pick is with the publisher of this book. In order to obtain the code samples for this book, I was required register my e-mail address. No doubt, I'm certain to be spammed by this publisher in the future.

I am writing code occasionally, so take it with a grain of salt, I am not a professional code developer. This book made me completely frustrated. The material is delivered in a quite chaotic way, with no systematic approach and a lot of basic information missed. Many examples are shown, but very often the explanations are incomplete or missing. As a result, after reading a first few chapters I was not able to learn almost anything about OpenCL. May be if you are a better CS than I am you would have a better experience with this book, but for a guy like me it was a disaster and waste of money. I am very surprised by the publishers who ignored a negative report from a reviewer and published this book - read the report of Liad Weinberger above, which I would recommend taking very seriously.

So... DevOps.DevOps is this mythical assembly line of progress that gets code from point A to point B in record time, and by record time, I mean no time. Coded, auto-tested, out the door, bing, bang, boom. The book was an entertaining read (and/or listen) and the authors cleverly couch the concepts of DevOps into a story about a failed delivery system (The Phoenix Project) built ala WaterFall, versus a new system hastily assembled (heh, see what I did there?) on an impromptu assembly line and delivered in record time, performing brilliantly - when compared to the failed behemoth Phoenix Project.So... here's the problem with DevOps, and the problem with this book.Companies with a nightmarish legacy code base (delivered or not as-of-yet out the door) that are attempting to build DevOps are using the same people that created their behemoth nightmare in the first place. As does the company in the hypothetical story in the book. Worse. The CEO in the book is a horribly bad boss, making wrong decision after wrong decision (I am sure to ramp up the tension to illustrate the saving graces of DevOps). So, I can tell you definitively that ANY company with leadership like that would lose their brilliant techs almost immediately. The market is in desperate need of brilliant techs so there is zero possibility that they are going to stick around a cess pool of politics when they can get a signing bonus and a raise from a company already doing it better and faster, and all without the drama. I'm just saying. And in order to pull off a DevOps operation, you absolutely need brilliant techs. You need tight, well executed product code with sufficient testing hooks so you can automate as you go. So you need brilliant QA that can understand and/or code the hooks right along-side the devs.In short, you need a whole lot more than a single Brent. You just do. And to imagine that there are a room full of brilliant techs writing broken down shoddy bloated code for Phoenix, but then can turn around and write the brilliantly architected code you need for the DevOps project... well... I am able to suspend belief when called upon, but this was more like taking it out back, shooting it, and burying it six feet under. I'm just sayin'.And with that being said, I am a huge, ginormous fan of DevOps (and the book was a FUN read / listen, thus the 4 stars instead of 3). It just takes an incredible talent pool to pull DevOps off and books like this makes companies think they just have to implement this process with the talent they have and poof! instant quality software that can be delivered instantaneously! Woohoo! They would be better served facing the reality of the mess they have, caused by (possibly) a lack of reasonable process, yah, but almost certainly by lack of talent as well. That's basically how they got where they got.Off soap box now. Doing the tango. Eating Oreos. Feel free to join!

The Phoenix Project is a business book masquerading as a work of fiction. As soon as I started evaluating The Phoenix Project in the context of a business book, rather than fiction, I started enjoying it a lot more, gaining much more insight into the concepts presented, rather than focusing on the unsophisticated prose and highly contrived scenarios. The "plot" serves as a vehicle for the authors to explore and pontificate on the business ideologies presented throughout. The main character, Bill, is mentored through each of these concepts, implementing them for the benefit of the reader to see the dramatic impact each can have on a business. For the most part, this is well executed, but it can become tedious when the characters "furiously take notes, so that they can google the terms later." Yes, the authors really write this, banging the reader of the head with, "Hey Dummy, are you paying attention? This is important."One of the best parts of the book was actually after the fictional plot ended, and the authors took the extra time to collect the concepts presented and revist them in a brief summary at the end. I hoped for this, as going back through The Phoenix Project to find each in turn, and learn more would have been difficult. If I could suggest to the authors an improvement, it would be to break the 4th wall during the fictional telling of the plot, and provide footnotes or references to the reader referencing where in the summary section they can read a bit more about a given concept. Nothing would be lost by this approach, as the reader quicky realizes the point and purpose of the plot anyways.Overall, The Phoenix Project provides an easy way for non-business people to get their feet wet with process improvements, without making the explanations and concepts too burdensome. I find myself quoting passages with co-workers who've also read the book, realizing that all too many of the scenarios presented are real life problems we face everyday (though perhaps less severely than in the Phoenix Project.) As such, I know I've already taken something away from the book, even if I won't have a chance to master every improvement, or even experiment with them all. It provides a new way of thinking about software development, and all the organizations it impacts. Four stars.
