A document that should be read, but it needs some more solid teaching behind it.

So updated, the Joy of Love presents teachings for the XXI century matrimony, when we have doubted about so many aspects of the marital life and children, the Pope clearly explains avenues to follow. It is impressively taught and explained.I followed how the media approached Pope Francis at the beginning, hoping he was going to change the “rules” for divorced, homosexuals, sexual relations amongst others; after this encyclical document, the media is no longer speaking about this wonderful teachings.

I have been married to my best friend for 40 years and we have two children, a son, 38, and a daughter, 35. Family was always our priority but it turns out that raising children together, to be fun and rewarding, demands a willingness to continually grow - otherwise you can't keep up with your kids.Pope Francis captures the spirit perfectly. I am not Catholic, in fact, I have been allergic to church since I had a run in with nuns when I was 5. But real spirit is unmistakable. Pope Francis has it. His perspective is profound.

Being Catholic biases my opinion. It was recommended by my spiritual director and friend, and could not wait to get it. So inspiring. Great advise about commitment, love, relationships and marriage. Excellent philosophy, easy read and just beautiful.

A wonderful book. Consoling, affirming, loving and supportive in so many ways.

I use this tool every day, sometimes as often as three or four times a day as I record and monitor not only the calories I'm consuming, but the fat grams, carbs, and protein. It also has a section of popular fast foods/brands/restaurants, which takes the guesswork out of what you're eating.

Good News: Nice book with a hard cover and an elastic page marker. Lists calories and nutritional value.Bad News: Print is pale in color, and hard to read for an old lady like me. Also, it's a bit confusing. For instance: If you want to find the calories for the cream in your coffee, you look up CREAM. It lists half & half and light cream. But, if you use heavy cream, you have to look in the H's, under HEAVY.

My main gripe is that serving sizes aren't listed for restaurant menus. PF Chang's combo fried rice claims to be 300 calories in the book, but PF Chang's own website says it's 1200 per serving. That's off by a factor of four, which is huge. If the book would list portion size (which is provided by the company) then this wouldn't be a problem. Portion sizes are inconsistent elsewhere. In the front pages they define a portion of nuts as a "handful" or "eight nuts," but then they only give nut calories in cups, which isn't as useful, and they omit the conversion from "handful" to "cups."The listings skew heavily toward canned, boxed, and frozen foods. These items typically have labels on them, so I rarely need to look them up. I would have appreciated entries for things that are harder to find, like sushi rolls. That said, if you find yourself in a situation where you can't find a label or don't have access to the Internet, then you will be able to cobble together a rough guesstimate from this book with some effort. As for the form factor, it's OK but awkward. The glossy pages make the book heavy, and the 4.5-inch width means I can only carry it in my large front pants pocket, not my shirt or back pockets.

This Kindle edition is NOT fully searchable. My idea of fully searchable is to be able to type an item into the search feature and have it go to that item. When you try that it tells you the item is not indexed (no info). If you consider clicking (searching)through dozens and dozens and dozens of pages (hundreds?) to get to what you want 'searchable' then it qualifies.My hands and wrists actually hurt after trying to look up some basic items like various vegetables, pork chops, shrimp at Red Lobster, etc. It was very time-consuming as well.There IS a feature where you can go to the letter of the alphabet but that still entails dozens and dozens and dozens of clicks and searching through items to get to the item you want...an incredible number if the letter of the alphabet includes a 'group' item like candy or cereal. For some reason some of the listings are not truly alphabetical either. For example, you will find tomato chili sauce, tomato juice, tomato paste, and tomato puree before you come to the listing for tomato...but tomato sauce comes after it.The restaurant listings require you to go through pages of beverages and minor items before you can get to the real food items. If the place has a bar (ie Red Lobster)...the pages of beverages go on forever before you ever get to the food.It's a shame and very disappointing...the listings are clear and easy to read. All the basic information I needed for calories, fat, sodium, carbs, fiber, and protein was there. It could use some more items within the basic foods but it would be adequate for use when you are out if it were truly searchable.

it was advertised as a spiral bound book but it is not and the print is really really small, I think I may need a magnifying glass to read it. I wanted the spiral bound so the book would lay flat when used but this is hard bound and really small in size and in print.

I purchased the hardbound version of this, as the spiral-bound version was not available. For me, the text is fine and the navigation is good. I just have to look at the lower corner of the page to see where I am.I love all of the data for everyday fresh/raw foods. More so, I love all of the data for restaurants (fast food or sit-down). This thing is amazing in that respect since here in Florida, it's not mandatory for restaurants to provide nutritional data. I can say that this thing will definitely get some use... at least until the next version comes along.

Fantastic guide - has everything you want to know about everything you eat and still small enough to keep in a medium size purse. Separate section for popular restaurant meals. Alphabetical: so easy to find calories, fat, saturated fat, sodium, carbs, sodium, fiber and protein! Love the plain cover and elastic page marker - looks just like my sketchbooks!

This has everything I needed in it, not only the calories but the protein for each food, this is a must for anyone trying to keep trackof their foods.

I love learning things about classic movie stars and about old TV shows, so this book felt like it was written just for me.Richard Irvin has become one of my favorites writers on the subject of television. I had previously read two of his others books about little-known TV projects and I thought they were both great.I feel the same way about this book. It's full of great information and trivia about little-known projects from many of the biggest movie stars of the 20th century.I am proudly a TV and Movies geek and I can say that I thoroughly enjoyed geeking out over what I read in this book. It was a very entertaining book to read.

I went into this thinking there wasn't going to be anything here of interest to me...after all, I wrote "Unsold Television Pilots 1955-1989". What could he tell me about the pilots by film stars that I don't already know? Quite a bit!  I loved this book. He gives deep background and detailed synopses of the TV series (and would-be series) projects of a score of big screen stars who hoped to revive their careers on the small screen with, in most cases, little success. The stars include Claudette Colbert, George Sanders, Peter Lorre, Zachary Scott, Joan Crawford, Alan Ladd, Orson Welles and Bette Davis. One of Davis'  failed TV projects in the 1950s was a proposed series entitled Morgan & McBride, written by Fay Kanin and produced by Jack Webb, that would have cast Davis as a lawyer with a younger partner played by William Shatner. It's a tragedy that it was never shot for the camp value alone. The concept was tried again with Greer Garson & Peter Falk as the leads, and was ultimately shot in 1972 with Susan Hayward (also profiled in the book) and James Stacy. This is a marvelous little book (only 223 pages but it feels like its packed with 500 pages of information) that I strongly recommend.

When I think of a gas shortage, I think of having to cut down on driving, but really had never thought of just how many products are petroleum based, from toothpaste to ball point pens. Our reliance on fossil fuels is terrifying, and Empty by Suzanne Weyn shows just how quickly everything can fall apart.Sage Valley is your average town full of middle class folks who work hard every day and live their lives as though nothing in the world will ever drastically change. When a global-wide oil shortage begins, however, they are in for a rude awakening. Suddenly kids are biking to school. Sports teams stop because they can't drive to the opposing schools. Gas costs $40, $60, then $90 dollars per gallon. People can't heat their homes. Medicines are in short supply. Food deliveries stop. Very quickly, people start to get desperate.Tom is your average second-string football player who only worries about his crush, head cheerleader Nicki. When the gas shortage begins, his biggest concern is not being able to drive her home. Nicki's biggest concern is having to wear her glasses because there haven't been any deliveries of her contacts to the pharmacy in a long time. Gwen has gone from the outcast to the only kid who has a warm house thanks to her brother's black market dealings. As if the gas shortage wasn't the worst problem, the climate change is finally about to get the better of them. Two enormous hurricanes from the gulf coast and the East Coast merge and make their way up the East to practically destroy everything in their "superhurricane" path. Disaster relief is virtually nonexistent in the current times, and Sage Valley is left to survive by its own devices.This is not only a story of how everything falls apart (although that is certainly in the foreground). It is also a story of how tragedy brings people together. How people in dire circumstances can become selfless. Heroes even. It is also a story of how things need to change if we are to survive. Towards the end of the story, the kids find a "Green" house that was built to be self-sustainable with low amounts of electricity, food production, and heat. Are we prepared for what is going to happen when the non-renewable resources we gobble up are gone?In the deluge of apocalyptic books these days, this is a fairly good one, especially for adolescents. It directly deals with their lives and can be an eye-opener for just how drastically their worlds can change. Sometimes it is hard for kids to understand how things truly affect them, like wars, natural disasters, etc., until they are in their backyards. This book puts the disaster in the worlds of these kids. It is also a fairly short, low-skilled book that would be perfect for younger or low-skilled students. The plus is that it isn't nearly as depressing as some of the stuff out there. Sure everything changes, but that doesn't mean it needs to be the end of the world! We can still find ways to survive, even in circumstances we never thought we would face!

I had high hopes when I picked up this book. The plot/scenario sounded interesting - no matter what side of the "green" debate one stands on, I don't think anyone can deny that oil *will* run out some day, whether it's in the near future or a few generations from now - and I've grown used to young adult books dealing with dystopian, apocalyptic or just plain disaster plots in an intelligent and decently written way.So, yes, "Empty" held a lot of promise for me. Unfortunately what it turned out to be was a book that read like a lecture aimed at ten-year-olds (or perhaps eight-year-olds), certainly not young adults - although the half-hearted attempt at romance and characters in their later teens seemed to indicate otherwise. The language and narrative style were so simplistic it was hard to get truly interested and the lecturing, the "message" came through so hard and clear that it occasionally nearly turned me off (and I'm by and large a supporter of the ideas being promoted here).That's not to say the book was *all* bad - it was a quick and at times not completely dull read, and the characters, while not exactly engaging or with a huge amount of personality, weren't off-putting. Might be a decent read for a child / pre-teen who is interested in saving the planet and life without oil, I suppose.

We used this book as a book study in my 8th grade science classroom. The book started out really great, but the huge hurricane seemed to come out of nowhere. My kids were super annoyed with the ending.

This author has shown the tragedy and hope of our depletion of nonrenwable resources. So many people disregard concerns today in terms of this situation. An excellent read for students!

Received this book in excellent brand new condition. This was purchased as required reading for my daughters science class.

This book was very interesting to read for me. I noticed many other reviews said this book is poorly written, but also that the reader did not finish the book. I will admit that in the beginning, the book is dull and lacked dialogue. Apparently, the author had never heard of the expresion"Show not tell." But as the book progressed, things started to happen and get more interesting. It was almost as if the bad author left off in the middle of the book and another better writer took over. I overall enjoyed reading this book and I recommend it to anyone who is willing to bear through the first few chapters and not just give up on it.

This is a very good book but very short. This is not to say, however, that it does not make a lasting impression. This highly probably dystopian future spells out our dependency on non-renewable energy sources and makes a compelling argument for alternative energy sources. Complex, relatable, characters who develop as the book goes on. Enjoyable!

I had this book last year and lost it while I was in the middle. I just had to buy it again so I could finish it!

We got the Minnie Mouse one for my daughter and my son was jealous so we got him this one. It’s great, he can use it and it give my husband and I a break to talk to each other. I am currently working on my nutrition degree and am using this book in three different classes at present. It is a wealth of information BUT...if purchasing this book for a class, I would highly recommend the paperback edition rather than the Kindle. All three of my professors have assigned our readings by page number, but unfortunately, the Kindle edition does not contain any page numbers or even references to them in the table of contents, and I and several of my classmates have had to repeatedly request this information from our professors, which is frustrating.

I bought this book used but I'm quite sure it was brand new. Needless to say I was thrilled! Great book that covers all the topics I'd hoped. I'm using it as a study aid for the RD exam.

The e-book does not display correctly in the windows version of Kindle. . The tables (and there are many) are really, really tiny. You can't see them without a magnifying glass. Really frustrating. Same with many of the figures. It displays fine on my IPAD though. The book is pretty good though.

If you already have the older version or are frequently in the go and still want access you you text,this is the way to go, digital version.You can also make flash cards and do searches making finding things much easier. I'd buy it again

This book is as complete as I imagine possible. It has almost every aspect that my dietitian course covers.I did not read it all yet, but to this moment it has been very helpful in my clinic classes!

I am an intermediate violinist who is new to fiddling. I tried some other fiddling books before this one, but they were either too easy or too hard, and the techniques were presented in a very technical way. This one was just the right level of difficulty and lots of fun. I like the choice a songs in the book, the arrangements, and the funny illustrations. I am a special education teacher, and performed some of the songs from the book for my students. They loved them. They particularly liked "Stinky's Blues," which was a great hit. They asked me to play it again and again. I would recommend this book to anyone who is taking up fiddling to add some fun to their musical experience. It will certainly give them that.

I can't believe how helpful it is to teach my adult son how to play the violin.The DVD is a teacher well worth following. Even the manner of holdingthe violin is described. Very helpful. I play the violin and now my son andI can play duets. Fortunately he reads music well...but I'm very gratefulfor the help given here. (I am really thinking of the DVD which comes alongwith Vol. 1.) Vol. 2 presents numbers a little more difficult, as you would expect.

This is the fiddle book my teacher selected when I finished Vol. 1. The CD helps me hear how the songs should be played and are very enjoyable listening to.There is an excellent selection of songs and plenty of teaching helps including music theory. The illustrations are well done. Brian Wicklund adds his interpretation to the music and has written several of the songs I look forward to learning.

Went through the Vol I basic and the Vol II intermediate in a couple of months after a 30 year hiatus (long story). Beautiful American and Irish fiddle tunes arranged and annotated so as to be instructive and accessible. The CD recording really helps. Even with well written musical notation this stuff can be a bit of a tooth-pull without an exact recording of the piece being played.

I played classical violin for 8 years, then took a 20 year break. I tried taking adult violin lessons, but the music my teacher selected was so difficult I didn't enjoy it. I bought this book on a whim, and I can't stop playing it. I'm having so much fun re-learning how to play. The book starts off easy, and gets progressively more difficult, although all the songs are at a beginner level. The CD makes it easy to work on intonation and it's like having your own band to play with. The DVD gives visual reminders on technique that are really helpful too. I loved this set, and have just ordered Volume II.

Only one complaint to author..... needs slower play-along tracks for beginners.

Loved it, will use it frequently. Exceeded my expectations as a hands on learning experience. Having the CD augments the book as a reinforcement tool. Good for any level player.

First I'm going to start with the reason I had to take a star off my ranking, because it's a big one. Maybe so big that removing just one star is over-generous: Allen Schoen is a proponent of a belief that attempts to connect consciousness with quantum mechanics. (Deepak Chopra believes this too, and it won him an Ig Nobel Prize.) This belief has a name: quantum mysticism, and it has been strongly objected to by the overwhelming majority of physicists from Einstein onward, who have described it as, among other things, "pseudo science","quackery" and "quantum flapdoodle." Quantum mechanics is, in reality, very dense, very difficult math, describing, specifically, the processes of subatomic particles. A superficial understanding of some of the theories derived from that math, coupled with a decades-long misapplication of those theories by secular mystics, has had a corrupting influence on people who have, perhaps with the best intentions, tried to find a hard-science foundation for some otherwise squishy thinking. When it comes to physics, quantum mystics know just enough to be dangerous. Or not even that much. I suspect Dr. Schoen, as a vet, would not look kindly on a physicist setting up shop as a veterinarian and proclaiming himself qualified to act and speak with authority on, say, colic surgery. I know as a horse owner I wouldn't want a physicist, not even Einstein, to perform surgery on my horse. It is best to be mindful of the limits of one's expertise. But one does not need to believe that quantum mechanics somehow underlies the truth that our beliefs, attitudes, feelings, and states of mind have impact on ourselves and those around us, including our horses. It's too bad Dr. Schoen chose to veer into such discredited territory, because it casts a dubious shadow over the reliability of the rest of his information and opinions. I happen to agree with the authors that adopting mindfulness is probably the single best thing members of the equestrian community can do for the horses in their care. And for themselves. As a long-term practitioner of meditation and many of the mindfulness techniques the book discusses, I like that the authors have presented them in a form that specifically relates to working around horses. I would hope that other, more "mainstream" equestrians would be introduced to these ideas, which they might otherwise have dismissed or not thought to apply in the riding arena. If you're looking for a typical how-to training or horse management book, this isn't it. This book addresses issues considerably more fundamental, but in some ways more abstract, to the nature of what it means to be a conscious human interacting with a radically different, but at the same time surprisingly similar, species. The two authors speak in individual voices, and I found myself resonating most with Gordon's (a retired rider and trainer) stories and insights while finding Schoen a little braggy and pseudo-shamanistic. But I still appreciated the book's primary focus: the critical need to get your own head and heart in order before setting foot in a barn. Both writers give concrete exercises for doing so. Buddhists are frequently quoted, and most of the meditations are modifications of Buddhist practices. This will bother that segment of the population who sees Eastern thought as offensive or threatening to the status quo, while deep practitioners may object to an element of "McMindfulness" which I would agree is there. At the other end of the spectrum, those who gobble up any trendy mystical claptrap will read with indiscriminate interest. If you find yourself in the middle of those extremes, I recommend you give the suggestions in this imperfect but interesting book a try. Take what's useful, but don't drink the Kool-Aid. Mindfulness has demonstrated benefits; it doesn't need to be a magic cure-all and there's no need to attach any crystal-waving sub-atomic chicanery to it.

The ideas and information presented in the book range from simple, practical suggestions - sweep the barn vs. noisy leaf blowers - to exploring the concept of how the equine industry impacts the world.The in depth approach to understanding and applying compassion is accessible and comfortable to even the spiritually squeamish as presented through Dr. Schoen's divinely human writing style. It's been too long since Dr. Schoen's last book and now he comes forward with a 400 page book that dwarfs all other publications on caring for horses. In our overcrowded lives, how nice to be able to sweep aside the stacks of books piled on the shelves in the barn office and reach for one source of wisdom.

This book makes you think. It makes you think about everything you do with your horse. It reminds you how riding is a conversation and how important it is to ask not tell. It reminds you to listen to what your horse is telling you because they tell you so much. Everything in this book can be applied to dogs and really to your whole world. How you treat your horse is how you want others to treat you. Not to give anything away, we followed Willie through the book and the co-author spoke of the regret at the end. The point was well made although sad. An excellent book for horse people, dog people and really anybody.

I highly recommend this book for all who are involved in the horse industry including parents. The book embodies a much needed sentiment that will affect the hearts and minds of all readers in a life changing manner. Further, it provides typical scenarios, real life examples and practical application tips that are simple and easy to apply in a variety of circumstances. Encouraging mindful stewardship, love and compassion for all, the book makes a wonderful gift as well. It will be read and re-read by generations to come.
