A central theme is the enabling of high-bandwidth communications in a cost-effective manner for the development of customer applications. These volumes are an ideal reference for R&D engineers and managers, optical systems implementers, university researchers and students, network operators, and investors. Volume A is devoted to components and subsystems, including photonic integrated circuits, multicore and few-mode fibers, photonic crystals, silicon photonics, signal processing, and optical interconnections. Volume B is devoted to systems and networks, including advanced modulation formats, coherent detection, Tb/s channels, space-division multiplexing, reconfigurable networks, broadband access, undersea cable, satellite communications, and microwave photonics. About the Editors: Ivan Kaminow retired from Bell Labs in 1996 after a 42-year career. He conducted seminal studies on electrooptic modulators and materials, Raman scattering in ferroelectrics, integrated optics, semiconductor lasers (DBR, ridge waveguide), birefringent optical fibers, and WDM networks. Later, he led research on WDM components (EDFA, AWG, fiber FP filter) and networks. Content is relevant but I am having an issue with the figures contained in the book. The graphs were authored as multi-color in many places and illustrate important concepts, I can however not view the graphs as they are not color! Additionally the book actually refers to it's digital versions to obtain the color figures but those didn't come with this purchase. A hundred dollar book but it doesn't have color graphs?Update: Publisher does not have access to the color figures! They will not provide the pdf without additional cost (even though they refer to the color figures in their figure descriptions). Avoid this book in printed form. Customer Service was a failure.

everyone should read this book! it is clearly written, has wonderful information for caregivers - but also enlightens everyone else what to expect from dementia, alzheimers, etc It will help you understand what the person is going thru and what you will have to deal with, how to help them each day, through every situation they may face.I cant stress enough how important this book is, and how well written - not in medical terms but in normal layman's terms, everyone can understand.Well done Carol!!!!! It is frightening...for both partners. I found myself losing my temper and then feeling guilty. Carol Howell's book is an easy read and has given me the tools, direction, and confidence to deal with dementia. Thank you, Carol, for giving me peace so I can do the right thing.

Wonderful book if you have a family members or friends with dementia, especially if you are a caregiver. It explains in simple terms the physical aspects of dementia and gives wonderful advice on how to relate to dementia patients. My husband has a close friend and I have a sister with Alzheimer’s and this book has been so helpful in our understanding of how to get into their world, how to treat them with love and respect and has actually helped us find patients in dealing with them. I would give 6 stars if I could! I ordered 4 additional copies to give friends who are struggling with family members with these issues.

This book is aimed at the family and the caregivers for someone with dementia. It is written with a lot of compassion by someone who has gone through the experience herself. She also mixes in a bit of humor to lighten up the heavy topic. When my literary agent suggested I read this book, I balked. The LAST topic I wanted to talk about--or read about--was dementia!But when a loved one showed signs of the onset of dementia, I took my agent's advice--and surprised myself by the delight I took in this well-written, entertaining book.In her warm, converstational tone, Ms. Howell walks the reader through the various stages of dementia--using mostly her own experience with her mother. She offers expert, practical tips on how to manage your emotions and help your loved one through this horrible time. She's even included jokes at the end of each chapter to help the reader see the lighter side. I so appreciate her caring, funny approach.If you only read one book to educate and aid you in helping a dementia victim, this is the one I recommend. Thank you, Ms. Howell, for opening your heart and our minds by talking about dementia!

It is okay. Some of it is written to be cute and light. And, anyone dealing with dementia needs l-i-g-h-t at times.As she says at the end of one chapter "Sometimes you just have to laugh" - yes, I suppose so. I don't appreciate the feeling of this book although it provides a lot of useful information. I bought three books more or less at once. One can't get enough education and perspective on this subject. The style of writing may appeal more to others. I don't want to 'throw out the baby with the bath water' - it is useful.

This book has been a godsend for me and for my Dad as we struggle to understand the changes my mother is going through with Alzheimers. It is written in a such a way as to be readily understood and provides us with the peace of mind we need to deal with the rapid changes Mom is experiencing. I highly recommend it for others who are overwhelmed with simply dealing day to day with this situation and don't have time or concentration to wade through pompously technical writings on the subject. Carol Howell hits just the right note based on her expertise on the subject and her personal experience with it.

Easy to read book with lots of helpful information related to dementia. Each chapter covers all the issues that families encounter. It gives you reassurance and helps you feel like you're not alone in the journey. She always ends with some sort of "funny" that encourages you to laugh and smile. I researched a lot of books and this by far is the best one if you are a caretaker of family member with someone with dementia. She also does podcasts that help you understand dementia and offers many helpful tips on how to help your loved one on their journey.
