I bought the new unused before buying this and returned the new because I did not need to spend the extra 60$ on the code. I am now halfway through my semester and I discovered that all my hw assignments are not quite the same. Upon inspection and looking at my friend's book. THIS BOOK IS A KNOCKOFF the cover is a printed reskin that has grammatical errors and does not use the same font. The back is not the same and I literally can no do my hw unless I borrow my friend's book. PLEASE LOOK FOR FAKES BEFORE KEEPING. Check the font and check the numbers. Correct book on the RIGHT and incorrect on LEFT.Edit: I contacted FiFi and they gave me a full refund make sure you guys check for fake books so you dont get stuck like I do halfway through the semester.

very useful book in terms of explaining process and step by step how to. The exercises, self check and programming exercises are excellent. The online MyProgramming lab access kind of sucks though. It's not labelled well, it's iconsistent, not all the labs from the book are in there and some chapters have no labs at all! What the hell?

If you judge a fish on it's ability to climb a tree... Joel salatin is a brilliant farmer and can debate with many well educated people. But he is not the best at writing books. So don't judge the book by lack of editing. Judge the book on the information that it is written about.I am forever grateful for the Salatin family in all that they have done and are doing! I am also grateful that Mr. Joel has written down about the family farm. Family businesses NEED to come back. Businesses need to morph and grow and change. Not everyone will stay with the family business but the wealth of knowledge passed down from generation to generation is a legacy our modern society has given up. It's a blessing! And small farms are needed everywhere in our country!

This was such a great book. Like Joel Salatin's other books, the writing style comes off a bit abrasive but I appreciate it because I feel like he's being honest and saying how he really feels, which is refreshing in today's world. While I don't necessarily agree with every single thing he wrote in the book, I still learned a lot from reading it and will absolutely take the lessons from this book with me into my future endeavors. In fact, I couldn't put the book down and read the whole thing in a couple of days. While Salatin talks specifically about farming (because he is, in fact, a farmer), the principles and values discussed in the book can easily be applied to any cottage industry or family business. If you have a dream to create some sort of family business and pass that along to your children and grandchildren, then you absolutely need to read this book.

Please be aware that this book is primarily about good parenting - the focus of the book is ensuring that farm kids enjoy their childhood, feel proud of their country lifestyle, and desire to carry on the family farm business in subsequent generations. If you are a farm family with young children or grandchildren, this may be an extremely helpful and valuable tutorial. It's all about the kids.I was looking for guidance on HOW to properly manage my newly purchased small family farm/forest so that it will be a thriving, enticing property for my son to inherit - how often to move the cows, when to breed the goat, how many chickens per acre to regenerate the pasture - and this book contained virtually no such information. It was heavy on the this-way-is-so-much-better-than-the-industrial-food-factory message... if you're buying this book, you probably already agree with that philosophy and don't need to read a couple hundred pages of that.I enjoyed the read, I (mother of 4 grown children) think the author's child-rearing methods are appropriate and effective, it just wasn't what I expected and needed.

This is a superb book on looking how we can live in community with others and build strong multi-generational vision for our families. Joel Salatin is funny, but to the point of problems with today's culture and modern hamster wheel lifestyle. This book will help you see how you can live in strong relationships with your children and other families. It will help you see how you can train your children to be hard workers, and enjoy the work. It will guide you to a more fulfilling life that you can share with future generations. The book is not a difficult read, but is full of many great ideas, and tips. It's a must read if you want to pursue an agrarian life, and even if you don't want to pursue an agrarian life.

This is the first book which I received from a group of my fellow employees when they found out I was venturing into buying a farm that my family and I could run. What an Eye opener!! I could hardly put the book down-- and my wife also flew through it. The downside of the book is it's visual stimulation, the busy rhetoric that Joel sometimes uses and the lack of details that are offered for construction methods,( how to get started from scratch etc.. But , don't let these small points dissuade you from ordering this book... it's wonderful, imaginative and very "catchy"... I look forward to more reading and following through on the ideas presented by Joel and his wonderful sounding family.

Joel is so down to earth. I can relate to most everything he is saying. Even tho I live here in the western U.S. and he is on the east coast. Farming is basiclly the same. I grew up on a farm as he did. I am trying to do so as organically as possible which is hard due to the chemical brain washing that most farmers have been subjected to. Thanks Joel !!

This is my 4th or 5th book by this author and they are all educational and amusing at the same time. He has a great, relaxed writing style that is easy to read and many of his stories are hilarious. The information given is very educational and just in-depth enough to cover the subject. I recommend any or all of Joel's books. I hope someday to get to hear him speak in person.

What is not to say about Joel Salatin and his farming advice. He is most excellent and I highly recommend this book for people wanting to get into multi-generational farming.

Alison Weir is known for her ability in bringing the Tudors to life while using historical research in such away that brings the entire family to life. I highly recommend this book!Great research is the hallmark of the author's books, and this compendium of their lives is no exception. Interweaving the relationships and lives of his three children and his great niece, Lady Jane Grey, she brings these people to life.I was particularly fascinated to read about Edward's life. I'd never known much about him and always imagined he was just some lad convinced to do things by his advisors, but historically this doesn't seem to be the case. Despite his short life, he was seen by those around him as not only a staunch supporter of the Protestant cause, but almost rigidly and implacably severe, even cruel, in his treatment of everyone, even his own sisters, making Elizabeth kneel in front of him if she wished to speak with him. He had a sadistic streak shown clearly in his short life, and he may have been incredibly ruthless and cruel if he'd lived, making his father seem tame in comparison. He had no compunction about signing death warrants, even for his uncle Seymour, but did love his stepmother Catherine Parr, and sister Mary despite her love of dancing! He scorned allying himself with his cousin Jane Grey although in fierce Protestantism, they were well matchedLady Jane Grey, the Tudor cousin of the three siblings is always a mysterious figure, but if truth were told, she was a tragic figure -- a Protestant puppet who was beaten into submission by her fiercely ambitious mother and forced to become queen, forced into an unwelcome marriage with a foolish and cowardly boy, and then because of the stupidity of her father and their allies, who tried to force a rebellion against Mary (who would've been content to just keep Jane in the Tower), she lost her head. This left Mary clearly the heir.We all know about the attacks on Protestants by Queen Mary (including burning my ancestress at the stake for her beliefs!), Ms Weir shows us how Mary Tudor's alliances were twisted by the men who helped her rule, including her very nasty Spanish husband who even wanted to bring the Inquisition to the UK. Mary suffered from very ill health, migraines, problems with her periods, and a very real paranoia brought on by her terrible childhood at the hands of her father through Ann Boleyn's influence.Almost toothless at age 38, wracked by jealousy of Elizabeth, and already in the last stages of menopause at her marriage aged 38, she was unable to bear children, leading to a pseudo pregnancy and psychological problems. If her father had allowed her to be married at an early age, the purge of Protestant would never have happened, but unfortunately this was not to be. And yet, all of Elizabeth's travails and even persecution, at the hands of her father Henry VIII, the court, Edward, Jane, and Mary, only led her to become one of the most famous and powerful leaders in the history of the world.If the book suffers any fault, it is that enough is not said in the end about the always fascinating Elizabeth. However, this book is more about the interactions of this fascinating and ruthless family, and Elizabeth will always deserve a book of her own!

As a Tudorphile, I greatly enjoyed this book, finding it informative, readable, and well-researched, judging from the use of primary sources. Much attention gets focused on Henry VIII, his wives, and Elizabeth in her later years, so it was refreshing to read about Edward, Mary, and the young Elizabeth. Ms. Weir provides enough detail to give readers an understanding of who the Tudors were as people, although with Edward, the focus shifts so much toward the activities of his uncles as to eclipse Edward himself.The title is a little misleading, discussing far more than the individual children and their reigns. The book is really a detailed account of events in England from the time of Henry's death to the accession of Elizabeth, including the issues and people that shaped those years. Lady Jane Grey was not a child of Henry VIII, but she was a pawn in the political maneuverings of the time, so her background and brief time as queen are presented in meticulous fashion. Disappointingly, Elizabeth is not covered beyond the death of Mary. The author seems to have saved any further discussion of her character and reign for the next book, which deprives the current volume of a sense of completeness. Ms. Weir easily could have included a chapter summarizing Elizabeth's 45 years on the throne.Still, the book made for enjoyable and informative reading about the less popular Tudors.

Alison Weir’s books are extremely well researched. Beyond that she makes the narrative interesting and the story unfolds more like historical fiction than just a history lesson. I’ve read several of her books and this is consistent. I think some of the subjects are easier to generate an interesting narrative about than others but she always does a good job at bringing the most out of the facts. Even though I’ve read about Edward, Mary and Elizabeth before this book goes into details I hadn’t known and focuses on their lives in relation to each other which is very interesting. A few bits are a little tedious but then interesting and detailed facts are introduced to the narrative. At first I thought it wasn’t going to be as good as it turned out to be. I give her credit for not dwelling on details of each of their reigns that didn’t directly relate to the sibling interaction. I enjoy English history so it really is interesting to read a new perspective. My favorite is still The Wives of Henry VIII but this is a very good book.

I am a fast reader & this book took a long time to read, almost a week. It did have a lot of information & was interesting, but it was not entertaining like historical fiction. It was more like a history book or encyclopedia. It definitely made me dislike Mary way more than I already did! The one thing I definitely did not like & felt cheated by, was that the book abruptly ended when Mary died & Elizabeth was made queen. The title was Henry VIII’s children & it detailed Edward, Jane Grey & Mary, so why not include Elizabeth? It seems the author has a separate book about Elizabeth but I bought this to read about all his children.

First the good parts:- Solid, enjoyable world-building, with the competing philosophies of shamanism, the push towards modernization and conformity, and the historical ebb and flow of power and subjugation being the standouts. I found myself oddly intrigued by the history of martial arts.- The military portions, while exceedingly brutal (do NOT mistake this for YA and give it to your child -- hell, even if you're an adult be prepared for graphic violence, including sexual), were a lot of fun. There's a mix of practical warfare, including chemical weapons and incendiary devices, with magical stuff that was honestly pretty engaging.- A common problem when you bring gods and magic into fantasy is "Why is there any conflict if the characters are this powerful?". That is not present here. The consequences of trying this are shown, and they are BANANAS. It's great.- If you like characters who are allowed to be horrible people, then you will not be disappointed here. I saw another review that said the heroine seemed insane by the end. This is a feature, not a bug. Between the very graphic war crimes and what we learn of the human relationship to the gods it's amazing anyone is still remotely functional by the end.- You get to the end and it's like...wow. This can't end well. I consider this a plus.Weak points:- Did feel like the first book could have been condensed. The primary conflict didn't come into play until 40% of the way through, after which the military portion kicked in and carried it through to the end. (Oddly you could conceivably start with Book 2, since it even included its own prologue.)- The style may be hit-or-miss for some. It lacks the stuffy tone of Tolkien-esque Epic Fantasy, which I appreciate, but occasionally veers into Quippy Territory. Depending on your preference this may be a pro or a con.- Very particular point: May read a little weird if you're a Japanese-American. This is influenced by real atrocities committed during the Sino-Japanese War, so if you're not willing to think about that ugly bit of history just skip it entirely, but oddly what bothered me more was that the Japanese proxy race were described in the same generalized terms of hive-minded fanatical hordes that were used to describe Japanese-Americans during World War II. There's a touch at the very end that indicates the culture isn't uniform evil, but we never seen anything to challenge their depiction as anything but sadistic monsters. There are also some textual reasons to present them as one-dimensional, and it may be challenged in the second book. Obviously this didn't keep me from enjoying the book, and it may not bother others at all, but if you do happen to have this background and just wanted to settle down and enjoy some Asian-inspired SFF do not be thrown.All in all, a little bumpy but intriguing enough that I'll be checking out the sequel.

I finished the book several days ago and I'm still disturbed by it. Although the protagonist is a young woman, this is not a YA book. The first two thirds of the book lure you in and make you invested with the characters. Rin Fang is a war orphan in the Nikan empire, whom the state has placed with an abusive family. Faced with the prospect of an unpleasant marriage, she becomes determined to take the civil service exam and earn a place in a service academy. She sets her sights on the most exclusive one because it's free for those who earn a place. She studies obsessively, burning herself with candle wax to stay awake, and wins through. At the highly stratified academy, she's an outcast because she's a dark-skinned peasant with no connections, having only one friend. This part of the book covers her education and development as a student, and it's leavened with bright sparks of humor. The setting is derived from China in the first half of the 20th century, mostly, and a pantheon is described as well, the nature of religious belief and the gods are important.. There are enough changes to the setting that it isn't a direct copy. World-building is limited in the sense that it's already familiar, it's not extensively original. This is not a criticism; the author's skill is such that it all feels fresh and the characters are vivid; it's easy to get on Rin's side. The characters aren't idealized or almost perfect with a few small flaws; they're allowed to be well rounded with good and bad traits. There isn't much character development, but that also makes sense since the students are being indoctrinated into a certain mindset and their concentration is on their studies.The last third of the book is... harrowing. If this is the first of three books, I'm not quite sure that I can take the remaining two. This third of the book focuses on the invasion by the Mugen Federation, the analog of Japan, similar to Japan's predation before and during WWII. Three specific atrocities have been adapted for this story: the comfort women, Lab 731, and the rape of Nanjing. The book is dedicated to "Iris," who I take to be Iris Chang, the author of a history of the atrocities in Nanjing. I've read that book and after reading this book, I can say truthfully that for me the fictionalized account is more disturbing because of the way the characters respond. The writing is so vivid and haunting that it's almost like you're there with Rin and her cohorts. You're with them as they come across the atrocities. It's not enough that the city's inhabitants were killed, it's the creativity displayed that will turn your stomach. The violence is present and brutal, but it's not gratuitous. And you see how soldiers respond to exposure to these sights. While these horrors are awful enough, it's the unraveling of our characters who are confronted with them and what they do that is heartbreaking. What happens to Rin is believable because it's a logical outcome from what she's experienced and endured and the power she can command.. Possible spoiler: Her revenge is catastrophic and you could draw a parallel with the atomic bombings too, just even more devastating.This is an extraordinary book, but at the same time I can't say that I'm glad I read it because the depiction of war is so heavy-hitting and brutal. It is definitely worth the read, but be warned; this isn't a book you can finish and set aside, forgettable.

The reality is, no review I write can come close to capturing the sheer experience of reading The Poppy War. It is dark, brutal, and oftentimes, presents moments that will make your heart ache and your core hollow. If you are looking for a light-hearted beach read, this is not the book for you. However, if you want a story that can give you a taste of the pain of warfare, and introduce you to characters that will haunt the depths of your mind for years to come, you need this book on your shelf.

My 9 (girl) and 11(boy) loved this book. They were assigned to read it for school. We read aloud together a chapter or two each night. They wanted the rest of the books in the series and are both loving the other books as well!

My son loves this book. He had to pick a mystery book for his next book report. He is in fourth grade and it's the perfect book for his reading level.

My 9 year old loves this book. My son doesn't like to read, so finding a book that he likes is no easy task. I'm planning on buying the other books in this series.

The book moved quickly and had age appropriate themes and grammar. I read this with my 4th grader for his realistic fiction portion of his class.

Not only does this book illustrate basic business principles, it also has useful (and painful) insights into schoolyard politics. Children can be cruel to each other and many of the cruel children grow up to be cruel adults (or perhaps merely inconsiderate, which can be just as toxic if they are people who cannot be avoided). We need to do a better job of teaching the children who aren't popular how to cope with the ones who are popular but cruel. This book goes a long way toward doing that.

With hurt and anger between them, they start a lemonade war to see who can make the most money selling lemonade. They recruit other people, move booths to different areas of the neighborhood, and they play dirty. Even though it's summer and they should be enjoying themselves and their lemonade businesses, things get real ugly between the two.This is a finely crafted book. I think this book might have some good things going for it. Our characters seem likeable, but... It just didn't work for me. At all.I'm boooooored... I thought I ought to finish it - they'd gotten together and I just really don't see much more interesting happening - no matter their background (that they keep hinting about in a really annoying way). But then I realised I'd only passed the 50% and OMG there's no way I'm gonna finish this :-/I think part of it is that the characters seem to over-complicate things and I'm just not buying it. The second is that they went from hating each other to being totally in lust in a few pages - it's this progression that's the best part, I don't want it done that fast! The book also seem to skip out on what is happening and instead described that suddenly they flirted a lot, but we never witness it... Finally, I'm so so tired of hearing about how enormously gorgeous he is and her being pretty much "ugly" in overalls etc. I never once heard him describe her in a way where I believe that he thinks she's hot...Anyway, I remember liking the first book in the series (though I cannot for the life of me remember what happened), but this really wasn't worth my money - sorry.

This book gave me all the feels! It is so sweet, and sexy, and down right heartbreaking at times. John is in my top five book boyfriends from now to eternity.

This author reaches in your chest and pulls your heart out. The emotions and the passion she creates for her characters is truly a gift.

Taylor has done it again. This book and the first book, Home to You, are heart wrenching and beautifully touching stories. I am obsessed with her and all her books, they are MUST reads!!!

This was the second book I read from this author. She writes the perfect romance stories. I can't put them down.

Taylor Sullivan does not disappoint. I suggest reading all of her books. She's one of my favorite authors and I wish I would have discovered her books sooner.

This was a great book.

Written well. Twists you don’t expect. Highly recommended. Hope to see lots more books by this author. Very talented. O

I don't reread a lot of books, but I try to reread this one at least once a year.If you are frustrated with your relationships, the people you work with, or even just the people in line at the store, READ THIS BOOK!One of the main principles:"Others will detect little clues of tone and expression, revealing how we really feel, even when we take pains to pretend otherwise....[T]hey're not likely to respond gratefully, but more likely to accuse us in return. And then we, in turn, will take offense, convince by their accusing response to us that we were right to accuse them in the first place!"It all goes back to the golden rule. If we treat people well and with genuine good will and charity in our hearts, they will react to us in kind. We can all take a few seconds to give someone the benefit of the doubt before accusing them of being out to get us as they cut us off in traffic, say something hurtful, or do something we don't like or understand.I actually had a major chance to apply these principles recently.I was in a bad car accident recently because someone dropped a queen size mattress on the freeway and I had to slam on my brakes and was rear ended. I was so mad at the stupid idiot who didn't take the time to properly secure their load and obviously didn't care about others. When the mattress owners showed up to pick up their mattress, not knowing they had caused an accident, they were a young married couple who probably didn't know that much about properly securing loads on a borrowed truck. Although there were consequences that needed to be faced, I was not killed or seriously injured, and I had been judging them as though they had intentionally dropped the mattress maliciously. I realized that I was wrong to think of them in that way. It was an accident. Everyone involved had insurance, and they probably learned a very valuable lesson from the experience.

I have read and reread this book, and need to read it again. It is beyond my ability to describe the changes it can make in your heart and in your relationships. I have already given away a few copies, and this one will go as a gift to someone very special in my family. I recommend this to anyone who has ever wondered what they can do to enhance their relationships, relate better to all those they interact with or learn to forgive past hurts. It does not, contrary to what a few reviewers have said, suggest that we become doormats or victims in any relationship, but read thoroughly and completely it empowers us to grow stronger and become part of the solution. After reading this I picked up Leadership and Self-Deception, Anatomy of Peace and the Outward Mindset by the Arbinger Institute, which C. Terry Warner helped to create. They fit beautifully with Bonds That Makes Us Free

I learned so much about myself, and so much about how to find greater happiness and love with the people I interact with. The author is gifted with an ability to share stories and experiences that I related to, and I found myself having numerous lightbulb moments of understanding with ways to change my own behavior, thoughts, and feelings allowing me to have a happier life and relationships. I didn't know how much I needed this book when I began reading it, but it changed my life for good and has continued to be a strong foundation for the joy and freedom I experience today. I consider this book as a more in-depth version of The Anatomy of Peace and Leadership and Self-Deception. It's a life-changer!

I love this book and how it opened my eyes to my relationships and more importantly, how I respond to outside circumstances. It teaches how to effectively make the changes that will bring more control to your life, better relationships and made me happier. I couldn't recommend it more!At first, it felt like it was repetitive, but each lesson added nuances to situations and helped me to see myself more clearly. It was hard to do that without seeing some of the control and change encouragement along the way in the first half, but truly changed my life for the good! I also listened on audiobook.Last, I got this to help me learn more about codependency and how to change it. I learned the skills I was lacking and didn't feel a need for a therapist after learning this. What a blessing!

I was not able to see past my own hurt and pain and after reading the book, I was able to honestly access my role in our issues and almost like a light bulb going on, was able to begin to change me and how I was reacting to my wife which made a world of difference. I'm sorry to be so harsh in reviewing a book written with good intent. But what kind of a cook book doesn't contain a single photo of any dish? It made me feel dyslexic to just see page after page of text crammed tightly. So I returned it :-(

I really liked this recipe book. I have been Keto for about 2 months and have started trying new recipes. I have to say, the cloud bread recipe is far better than similar that I have tried. The recipes are great. They also have some great meal plans in the recipe book that I’m excited to try. Taking all the guess work out will be fabulous!!
