This is a wonderful book. Dr. Bondar provides an astonishing breadth and depth of information on sex and mating in the animal kingdom in a highly readable and remarkably wise and funny way. Each chapter is short and self-contained, but the book also pulls together its themes. She derives and explains principles, gives examples, and notes counter-examples. The book shows a passion for getting the facts right, and notes points on which science has not yet answered all the questions. Any number of myths and misconceptions are exposed. There also are moments that startled me, made me flinch, or made me go ew!, but they all are on topic and earned. In all likelihood,there will be dozens of facts in this book that will strike you as so interesting that you will be mentioning them for months. I know I will re-read the book because there is just so much worth reading here and so much that is mind blowing that I could not take it all in on one go-through. This is the book equivalent of whom you wish would occupy the empty seat next to you on a long plane flight, if you're in the mood for a great conversation.

The five stars only apply if this is a subject that interests you. The book explains the many ways animals reproduce - as shocking and violent as many are. The notion of "when a man and a woman love each other very much ..." does not apply here.

My book club voted to read this book and I will definitely say we were not disappointed!

Must read for anyone with an interest in reproductive biology, wildlife, and sex (which should get pretty much everyone). Entertaining writing with a spoonful of perfectly twisted sense of humor that make the science do down- in a most delightful way!!

I'm just writing this to get this off my review wall. bought for my son.

This set includes the trilogy, along with the extra book titled, "Four". I actually recommend reading Four first. It's the comets set. My 13 year old triplet boys started reading this series in school. They couldn't stop talking about it, so I bought this series for them, and I even read it myself. It's very, very good. The movie is pretty good too; although, the books are a lot more detailed. I highly recommend this series. I would caution for younger readers as the two main characters have some heated moments. Nothing that heavy, but on the line. I wouldn't want my 8 year old reading something like that. I hope this review has been helpful for the parents out there. All in all.. Definitely a great series! A Must Read!

First off, I have to admit that it is difficult for me to rate this book without rating the series as a whole, so that is what I am going to do. It turns out I cannot review this series without comparing it to Hunger Games.There is a great deal of similarity between this series and Hunger Games. Teenage coming-of-age adventure story in a post-apocalyptic dystopian society. I could go further into the premise, but it really does not make much sense outside the context of the book.Again, like Hunger Games, I found the first book gripping and devoured it quickly. The second book did a good job of keeping up that pace.Then the third book comes up, and, once again like Hunger Games, it takes the "Us vs. Them" story and throws in "oh look, These Guys Too! Bet you didn't see THAT coming!" plot hook, and things go off the rails for me. The first two books seem to be building your hope for the characters and the world they live in and the ability for them to make the world better. Then they expand the world, and the third book goes about crushing your hopes of a happy ending.While reading the first two books, I was a little bummed that it would be over in three. By the time I was about a quarter through the third book, I was ready for it to be done. I was looking forward to Four during the first two books. After reading the third, I don't have any real interest in reading Four anymore.The real world does not have happy endings for everyone, but this isn't really about happy endings. It is more about building up these characters to great heights with the implication that they will usher in a new age. Then, it turns out in the end they are a cog in a machine in the end. Important, sure, but used to an end just the same. I would actually rate the first two books at five stars, but the third book is such a letdown that it brings down the whole series for me, and this book is useless without the other two. If you read Hunger Games and loved it, this scratches the same itch. In the end, I didn't hate it, but it lost a lot of luster quickly in the end.

I have to start by saying that watching the Divergent movie made me want to read the book. I really enjoyed the movie and I thought for sure there was more in the book. Movie goers didn’t miss as much as I had hoped.Beatrice is about to take the test that will determine which of the five factions she will go into for the rest of her life. The five factions are: Candor (the honest), Amity (the peaceful), Erudite (the intelligent), Dauntless (the brave) and Abnegation (the selfless). Each of the factions carries out certain job throughout the city. Those without factions do all the dirty work and have no rights in society. Born into Abnegation, everyone thinks she will stay in. On the day of the test, Beatrice learns she is Divergent. Fitting into not just one, but many factions. She chooses Dauntless and is told to keep her Divergent identity secret. In dauntless Beatrice renames herself Tris, and she is tested to determine who she really is. Her failure could leave her factionless. Her testing will reveal that she is divergent if she isn’t careful. Being divergent might just get her killed.I can’t believe how spot on the movie was. I could completely picture the scenes while I read this book. There were only a few details left out of the movie Divergent. This book was really addictive. Even though I knew what was going to happen, I couldn’t stop reading the story. There were a few interactions left out and we get a more in depth look at Tris’ struggle to leave Abnegation and her whole family behind. The development of her relationship to Four made much more sense in the book and he was instrumental in the end. We also get more of an explanation of Tris’ fears and why Four was so different from his peers when he graduated.I really enjoyed the character building, getting to know her friends and her fears. The author is able to draw in the reader right from the start. The location of this story is a dytopian Chicago. I liked the gradual world building in this story. The whole society is cut off from the outside. The idea that people are either of 5 personalities was really problematic for divergents because they have characteristics from more than one. The struggle to pick just one thing for the rest of your life is something a lot of young adults can probably relate to as they make career choices, so this story may feel close to home.

Cheap quality..looks like a screen print on front and inside like a very old child's coloring book. NOT WORTH $12! I've seen better quality from the dollar store and an very disappointed. Would send back but already know they would charge me half of what I paid in the first place to do so!😑

What a disappointment!! I was completely mislead by the description of this sketchbook which stated that it contained "premium," cream paper. The description is worded in such a way as to make it sound like the paper is heavy enough for sketching with pencil or pen or for water color painting. The description says it would make a beautiful gift. In reality, this is a cheaply made paperback book that would be difficult for a child to hold open while drawing. There is no way to remove the pages. The paper is yellow and thin. It would not be suitable for using any medium other than pencil and, if the child wanted to erase, I doubt it would hold up very well. You certainly couldn't use markers or watercolors. The printed material in the book looks like a poorly made photocopy. The whole thing speaks of cheapness. I might pay a dollar for this in a dollar store but, had I known what poor quality it was, I certainly would not have paid over $12! I'm disappointed because I ordered two of them for my daughters' Easter baskets and now I have limited time to find something else. I'm returning the sketch books immediately.

One of the things I appreciate about this sketchbook is the ideas, in the form of images, that are peppered throughout the book every couple of pages or so, that can inspire our favorite artist to see what she wants to create!

If you read a lot of books in this genre, then this is likely to be a retread of older studies for you. If not, then you might enjoy it. It's an easy read, and there's a lot of fascinating material.That said, the author's own "hidden" biases are on full display as well. His chapter on racist bias immediately and definitively sets about showing that racism exists - the author relaying his own personal experiences with it as a minority - and then explores why. In fact, he has a couple of chapters that deal with racism in a fairly masterful way. Those are worth a read. However, in the chapter on sexism, he spends a few pages rambling on about how there's no real way to establish in any useful form that sexism is behind any individual incident that involves a woman. He eventually did get it together and pull out of his spiral to discuss sexism as experienced by trans individuals, but not without the disclaimer that a lot of that discrimination might be attributable to bias against alternative sexuality. Having read substantial amounts of - yes, scientific - as well as less rigorous studies into sexism, I found that chapter sloppy and poorly assembled. It was clearly not the priority for him that racism was. And being dismissive of 51% of the global population is probably a poor strategy for success. I'd have more respect for his book if he simply said, "I'm going to focus on racism since it's where my interest lies," and then not addressed sexism at all. Fair enough - we tend to speak to what we know. But to throw in a sloppy, poorly assembled chapter on sexism, and then act as if it could barely be quantified as a societal force - despite the massive crowds of people globally saying otherwise - felt insulting and dismissive. Definitely a turn-off.All in all, I can't give this a huge thumbs up or down. It's okay. But if you're only going to read one book in this genre, I'd recommend "Mistakes were Made But Not By Me" or "Dataclysm."

This was a very enjoyable read, as most people are not consciously rascist or sexist, but they do have hidden biases of which they are not even aware. I just wish there was more than one chapter about sex bias; the author does first-person interviews with a man-to-woman transgender, and also a woman-to-man transgender working at the same place in the same scientific field, and compares their experiences before and after the gender change. That's one of the most compelling and credible things I've ever read about sex bias in the workplace, and I do wish he included more examples or expanded to more chapters.Unfortunately, this book was also repetitive about race bias. There are several chapters about that, but it does seem that the author only tested for bias on Americans and only on black or white people. He didn't test for bias against any other races or by any other races. That makes this book somewhat incomplete.Also, I have my own bias: I think that Americans make everything about race, especially after Obama. In the current news, Meghan Markle just got engaged to Prince Harry, and the big deal in the tabloids is that she's half African-American. So, does race matter or does it not? If it's not supposed to be important, then why is it being reported at all? Maybe that's why racial bias is so prevalent here--it's not important, except when it is, and then it's a big deal.

Unlike our normal (conscious) brain, which is live and tangible, the unconscious brain, referred to in this book as the "hidden brain", is intangible and elusive. In fact its own existence was in question. Ever since it was given its name (by Friedrich Schiller in 18th century) it was questioned or even rejected by some psychologists. However, its function and influence were evident enough to engage the attention of famous psychologists like Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung who developed the concept and employed it in psychoanalysis and other psychological problems. In fact, Freud made the concept popular and it became one of his main contributions to psychology.Freud likened the mind to an iceberg with its tip (above the water ) being the conscious mind and the bulk of it (under the water), being the unconscious mind. This is significant as it implies that most of mental work is done by the unconscious mind. Later research and development showed this to be true. Indeed some psychologists believe that only 25 percent of our mind's work is accomplished by our conscious mind. What is curious about this arrangement is that the conscious mind is mostly unaware of the actions of the unconscious mind. This is not only surprising but also mystifying. In other words , after having made a seemingly conscious decision we would be told it was really the hidden brain that had done the work,or at least had guided us to the decision. If someone is told that he does not understand how his mind works he is likely to be offended, yet, this has become an acceptable fact in psychology.The contents of this unconscious mind have been somewhat of a mystery. Freud thought it is a reservoir containing our feelings, concerns, fears, and memories which are outside the scope of our awareness. The reason they are suppressed down below is because their surfacing might be disturbing or annoying, e.g. like remembering an ugly crime . How can one access this reservoir? One way is through psychoanalysis as Freud had done using the power of reasoning and allowing several sessions to unravel a patient's background. More often the contents surface in dreams or else through hypnosis. On reading about this strange arrangement one cannot help but wonder: Was this an integral part of our creation, or did it evolve in us over time?Although we are accustomed to think of the unconscious mind at the personal level, the author gives it another dimension by demonstrating its effect in groups and institutions. He does this using anecdotes and case studies. The danger here is that often the anecdote is in itself so exciting that it overshadows the psychological analysis. One issue dealt with here is racial bias which is presumably generated by our unconscious brain. One researcher in Canada, G. Aboud, tried to trace the origin of this issue by showing little children a picture of a white man and a black man. She would tell the little 3-5 years-old stories about a robbery, or any other offending event, and ask the children to point to the possible culprit in the picture. Invariably most of them would point to the black man . No matter how the question was repeated the result was the same. Where did this bias come from? Parents? Teachers? Friends? She wondered. And would it be embedded and sealed in their hidden reservoir until it surfaces later in life creating our modern-day problematic racial discrimination?Surely, there is a lot more research to be done on this mystifying unconscious mind.Fuad R. Chapter 1: I Need My Cap   My cap has a Speed Accelerator button. Should I push it? Mom hates when flames shoot out of my shoes. Even pretend ones. Clint McCool doesn’t need those rocket engines, anyway. I have fast feet.   Varrrrooooom! I fly down the stairs!   Varrrrooooom! I rush outside!   Oh no. Turtles are on the sidewalk!   Screeeech! I put on the brakes.   Hmm. Can I run on top of their shells? Nope. These aren’t real turtles. They’re kids with big backpacks. They walk so slow. Did they forget? Today Sol-Ray Man is coming to our school!   Sol-Ray Man is the most super superhero ever. He uses the sun’s rays to power up. He zooms to the disaster. He activates his light beams. He saves the planet three times in every episode. And today he’s going to tell me how.   I zigzag around the turtles.   “Wait for me, Walter!” Mom yells. That’s right. She called me Walter. She named me Walter after my grandpa. What a disaster! Luckily, I knew what to do. I named myself. Clint McCool.   “Hi, Clint McCool!” Marco shouts. He’s at the corner with his mom.   I run up to him. He’s the best Best Friend ever. He always calls me by my real name. He’s supersmart. He made the buttons that control my powers. He tied each one to my cap. They help me save the day. That happens more than you’d think.   “Let’s go, Marco! Sol-Ray Man is coming today!” I say.   “I know. Look what I made.” Marco shows me his arms. He has special bands on his wrists. Each band has three shiny panels.   “Wow!” I say.   “XL7 Ray Benders,” Marco says. “Sol-Ray Man uses them. They direct his beams.”   “They zap around corners. Zap over buildings,” I say. “Zap past his archenemy Eclipse. So he can’t block Sol- Ray Man’s light,” I say. “Let me see them work.”   Marco doesn’t take them off. He moves his arm. Light zaps off the panels.   “Can I wear them?” I ask. “I need to show Sol-Ray Man I’m a superhero, too. I don’t want him to think I’m just a kid.”   “But, Clint McCool, you are a kid,” Marco says.   I sigh. I know. Real life is so boring. Except when we can have an escapade. Or when my friend makes cool stuff that he should share. “Please, Marco?”   “You have your cap,” Marco says. “I can’t wear my cap in school.”   Our teacher, Ms. Apple, always locks it in her desk. That’s a mistake. I need the cap. It helps me focus. Then I can control my powers. Ms. Apple doesn’t understand that. She’s a grown-up.   “I probably can’t wear these, either,” Marco says.   Marco’s right. School means rules. “Too bad we can’t zap around the rules.”   Then . . . Zing, zong, zing. Brain flash! “I don’t need my cap. I don’t need all my powers—just one. And one button.”   Hmmm. Which one should I choose? Invisibility? Idea Generator? Speed Accelerator? That’s the one. Then I can race Sol-Ray Man around the auditorium.   I tug at the Speed Accelerator button. “Help me get it off.”   Marco twists.   I yank. “Why did you tie it so tight?” I say.   “So you wouldn’t lose it,” Marco says.   “What are you guys doing?” M.L. comes over to us. She’s our best friend, too. She can walk on her hands. For real. She doesn’t even have to cheat.   “Tug of war? I can beat you both,” M.L. says.   She could do it, too. She’s superstrong.   “Maybe later,” I say. “I need this Speed Accelerator button.”   M.L. grabs the button. Marco and I hold the cap. She pulls.   Pop! The string breaks. The button comes off. It flies through the air.   “Catch it!” Marco says.   I push the Jump button on my cap. I boing really high. But not high enough.   The Speed Accelerator button lands in the gutter. It rolls down through the grate. Disaster!
