There were some missed expectations on my part - based on the description I expected there to be more heat... it's not that kind of book. Or maybe it's just suuuuuuuuuuper slow burn and that will come in book 2? There are a number of scenes with sexual tension and for the most part they are kind of one off - not really building up. The world building is solid. This was the first book of C.N. Crawford's I've read and I get the impression from the other reviewers that this one ties in nicely and that possibly it's not the best as a first read. Most of the characters could use more depth/complexity. The angel involved with the plot twist is the most complex by far.

The Great Nightmare is not exactly the End of Days. Instead it is more of a special ops mission lead by 3 winged males of ectreme power. The story line mentions the old gods. So this is more of a take over with a lot of killing invoved. The world building is good. Yet it is not as bleak as it should be. We are talking about a huge city that has been decimated. Its citizens killed by famine and disease. Or viciously murdered by the Hunter and their bodies fed to the Hellhounds. Not not bad. Liked her going all out feral fae atvthe turning of Spring.

I had a real hard time getting into this story-- not sure why--and I didn't start to enjoy it until the half-way point. Well written, so I think I simply don't like the characters. I bought the second book of the series, but I think I'll stop here--other readers may feel differently, so I recommend reading Amazons' Look Inside feature to read a few chapters to see if this storyline of interest to you.

A unique and intriguing UF novel. A little slow to start but once it gets going it's hard to put down. I went back and forth between this and the audio version. I loved the story and the characters, I think the only real negative for me was I had a really hard time with the narrator but I do plan to read the next installment in this series.

I'm not really considering books featuring the fallen/angels, but was glad I selected this series. I like the main character and the story was well written, with an easy flow, build-up and lots of action, even though a bit gruesome. The world, cruelty and distraction were well-described and even though a slow start, the story pulled me in as it continued. Expect lots of sexual tension and internal struggles for Ruby. I couldn't stop reading and immediately started with Book 2 ...

Anyone who likes reading faebooks, of magic, evil, twisty fairytales...here you go!!She got this way of weaving the story so that you actually think you are living it yourself. As if you are seeing it like a movie. I didn't even realize I was getting to the end, but was sorely disappointed when there wasn't another page to turn.I love how she m akes you feel what the characters are, the fear rippling over her, shadowmagic surrounding her in black tendrils....read it!!

Can't say enough about this series I thoroughly enjoyed from start to finish. Ruby is a burlesque dancer Fae masquerading as a succubus who is determined to get her sister back after she is taken by the dragons. This book everything angels, dragons, vampires, and magi and relationships between the species. Amazing written book couldn't put down looking forward to the next book to see what happens

I don't know how these two come up with such well written gripping books! I was caught from the first page. I was on the edge of my seat at moments and just pullled into this awesome book. So clean and so we'll written. No errors at all. I recommend this to everyone!

Review

Winner, 2018 Anthony Award for Best Anthology Winner, Bronze Medal, 2017 Indie Book Awards for Anthologies, Foreword Reviews "Resistance takes many forms, particularly in the current political climate. Few methods of protest are as cheerfully strange and purposefully bizarre as THE OBAMA INHERITANCE." ―The Washington Post “It's a commonplace these days to say that real life has become so unpredictable that it outstrips anything anyone could dream up in fiction. I think I'm guilty of having made that banal observation a few times. But that was before I read The Obama Inheritance, a collection of 15 stories so sly, fresh and Bizarro World witty, they reaffirm the resiliency of the artistic imagination.” ―Maureen Corrigan, NPR Fresh Air "Truth may be stranger than fiction, but why should the conspiracists have all the fun of creating fake narratives? ... Yet, running beneath the book’s mockery of conspiracy fanatics, the unspoken question that I raised earlier persists: Why are there so many outlandish conspiracy theories about the Obamas? The answer, I believe, can best be detected as this book’s authors do, through the lens of identity ― and I’m not talking only about race.” ―Clarence Page, Chicago Tribune “Top 15 Recommended Fall reads!! . . . Still relevant.” ―Newsweek “Stories that are often humorous, always entertaining, and mostly non-political, and that make use of the more absurd conspiracies surrounding Barack Obama and his presidency.” ―Mystery Scene Magazine "There will no doubt be an abundance of interpretive, critical, but dryly academic books examining Barack Obama’s two-terms as President. Phillips’s story anthology stands a testament to how these same years inspired the artistic imagination. Regardless of your political views, THE OBAMA INHERITANCE belongs on the shelf of every reader who enjoys imaginative stories of the contemporary world.” ―Bookgasm "Surreal, silly and sometimes shocking, the stories in “The Obama Inheritance” succeed in delivering a heady mix of thoughtful satire.” ―The Press Herald “Some short story collections are eclectic. Some are ambitious. Some are utterly mad. This one is all three.” ―San Francisco Book Review "Fast-paced, humorous, twisty piece of noir pulp." Cascadia Subduction Zone Literary Review “High-octane creativity at work. . . . Some of these stories are laugh-out-loud funny, while others are immensely disturbing simply because you know that somewhere, someone actually believes this ridiculousness for real.” ―Manhattan Book Review "Pulp fiction for the post-Obama era . . . Readers who enjoy political satire in its many varied forms will certainly enjoy this collection." ―ALA Booklist "Fifteen authors known for genre writing, many of color, take right wing tales and transform them into their own righteous pulp. ... Who thought being militant could be this fun?” ―The Hard Word “A fun read.” ―Washington Independent Review of Books “Writers take on the racist backlash against President Barack Obama in genres as diverse as spy thriller, noir mysteries and science fiction. ... Still relevant.” ―Newsweek “Intriguing theme anthology . . . Truly excellent.” ―Publishers Weekly “A mashup of genre fiction . . . imagines the consequences of white supremacist politics on American society.” ―Kirkus Reviews "Wildly inventive, and smarter than the entire GOP combined, The Obama Inheritance is rich with tales to keep a reader up late into the night. Look at this Murderer's Row of talent! You can't go wrong. On top of that this book is a hell of a lot of fun." ―Victor LaValle, author of The Changeling

What a joy to discover this collection of short stories, all expertly crafted around the satirical premise: What if all the right-wing conspiracy theories about The Deep State are foundationally true? The 15 pulp-noir stories are all over the map and wrought by some of the finest authors alive, including Walter Mosley, Robert Silverberg and the collection's editor, Gary Phillips. They're all first-rate, but among my favorites: "The Continuing Mission" by Adam Lance Garcia, "A Different Frame of Reference" by Walter Mosley, "Forked Tongue" by Lise McClendon, "I Know They're In There" by Travis Richardson and "Deep State" by Désirée Zamorano. "Give Me Your Free, Your Brave, Your Proud Masses Yearning to Conquer" by L. Scott Jose is a masterpiece of satire and Gary Phillips' "Thus Strikes the Black Pimpernel" is a tour de force that sticks the landing on the entire compendium. Each piece packs a surprise and takes wild chances. If a couple of stories are overwrought? Well, that's the whole point. This book, right down to the amazing artwork on the cover is pure fun.

The pitch for this anthology sounded right up my street – 15 stories where the basic instruction for each writer was: “Pick any conservative conspiracy theory about President Barack Obama – no matter how loopy – and just run with it.”The result – at least for me – is disappointing. For the most part, the stories here either aren’t very well written or don’t really follow the instructions – at least as far as I understood them. Maybe I misunderstood the overall premise, but it seems like at least half the stories here are less about exploring the fun fictional possibilities of Obama conspiracy theories and more wishful-thinking revenge tales where conservatives who badgered the Obamas for years finally get theirs – which is fine as far as it goes, but in my mind it isn't really in the spirit of the stated mandate. And what a Robert Silverberg story from 1982 is doing here is a mystery in itself. To be sure, there are a quite a lot of good ideas here – Michelle Obama as covert operative, Barack Obama leading a secret resistance movement after Trump goes full fascist, the true secret of Ruth Bader Ginsberg’s longevity, Obama and Biden as Star Trek time travellers – but not many develop into decent stories. Notable exceptions include Walter Mosley’s “A Different Frame of Reference”, which riffs on that photo of Obama sneaking a smoke (or was he?), and Christopher Chambers’ “The Psalm of Bo”, which gets points for coming up with the idea of Obama’s dog leading an army of weaponized dogs against the last MAGA stronghold in post-apocalyptic America – written in semi-Biblical language, no less.FULL DISCLOSURE: I didn't read the last few stories because the e-book crashed. Which I've never experienced with a hard-copy book. I'm just saying, those last ones might have helped put an extra star on this review.

A book sure to be disparaged by dullards and alt-right folks. For everyone else, this is dystopia for big kids at its best. Stories like Kate Flora's Michelle in Hot Water and Forked Tongue by Lise McClendon, are smart and can get the reader into wishful thinking mode. Several, including True Skin, A Different Frame of Reference and Sunburnt Country are scary in their dark possibility as future realities. Then There's Nisi Shawl's Evens, a story everyone who felt gypped by the Republicans after the Supreme Court vacancy debacle, will relate to. Some are straightforward reading, others, like The Paslm of Bo, require the reader's full attention in order to get rewarded at the end, but all in all, it's a darn good collection that will shock some, creep out many and leave most with fragments that will explode in their heads when they read or hear about political events in coming years.

In this fun, wacky, mind-bending collection, top-notch writers play with the concept of conspiracy about the presidency of Obama. Some really far-out ideas make this an interesting grouping, and show how different stories can be despite a similar theme. You never know if you'll meet super-spies, lizard-people, or be thrust into an apocalyptic landscape.Good writing and different ideas make this a book to be read, no matter what your political views, despite the negs from treason-trolls trying to pee on something which mocks their prejudices. Yeah, it's got echoes of Philip K. Dick, and that's a good thing.

Great stories! Well-written, imaginative, yet full of subtle truths and hints of hope for the future. Full disclosure: I am not completely done reading the book because I am reading it with my mother who reads at a slower pace, but we both are enjoying the sharp wit, and hilarious scenarios that encompass the bizarre times we live in. We'll both be sorry when we complete the book so we are cherishing each story and hope that the many great authors will go on to write other books of a similar nature.

A remarkable collection of stories with a fascinating and well executed conceit. There were some stories I loved! (Lise McClendon, Kate Flora and Adam Lance Garcia wrote three of my favorites.) A couple that were not my cup of tea, but overall a great collection.

These short stories were a great, mind-bending, imaginative trip, and the The Obama Inheritance book cover itself is worth the purchase price. Conspiracy theories conjured during Obama's terms as President, on their own, were nutty and off the rails of reality. The authors take the conspiracy theories and thrust them into another dimension, resulting in thought provoking tales of action, fear, comedy, despair and hope.

This is going to be a Christmas present. It looks good when I flipped through it.

This book was issued in 2017, yet the author only takes us through the events of Klaus Barbie's life history up to 1984 when the book was originally published and Barbie was sitting in a French prison. With the re-issuance of the book, it would have been nice, even expected, that that an epilogue outlining the outcome of Barbie's trial, conviction, and sentencing would have been included by the still active author. The book ended abruptly at about 80% and the rest of the book was taken up by the bibliography. While it should have been foot noted, the bibliography was a reasonable secondary effort. However, I still can't get past the fact that I feel boondoggled by the author with this re-issuance. I purchased this book to find out what happened to Barbie, including the ending, which was lacking. While much of the book provides good insight into the Butcher of Lyon, (not Lyons) it really bogs down in the middle when the USA uses Barbie as an intelligence agent during the first years of the cold war with Russia. There are so many players named, so many opportunities to return Barbie to France by the U.S. to stand trial and none of the arguments posited against it hold any water. Once again, we waged war but didn't bother to clean up the massive outcome. So many of the Nazi regime walked out of the war and into a wonderful life, living out their time either in Germany or South America until they died of old age, often taking the spoils of war (stolen Jewish money, jewels, paintings, etc.) with them to ease the pigs through their later years. In this case, America aided and abetted this Nazi pig with money, women, liquor, and good food instead of doing the right thing and letting him answer for his war crimes. Terribly disgusting to read about the part we played in Barbie's life after the Final Solution and those who contributed to this miasma will definitely pay their final dues. While this appears to be an accurate forecasting of Barbie's life, I will not excuse a book re-issuance that does not update itself--hence, the low rating. Otherwise, the coverage of his life and escapades seemed well documented and Bower often discussed areas that were in conflict. This is not the first book that I've purchased that has been re-issued but not updated and I believe Amazon needs to clarify in their description that it is not an updated version. While I would recommend this book as background, I would not recommend it as the definitive story of Barbie's life.

A well researched piece on The Butcher of Lyons. Could be regarded as a cliff hanger as the book has not been updated to include the circumstances of his death by cancer in prison at the age of 77. I was raised with the naive belief that the denazification of Germany was a success. Imagine my surprise to discover that so many kept their uniforms in the closet waiting for the birth of the Fourth Reich. Disappointing to read about the French collaborators; so many of them. With all that, the US using Barbie to combat Communism seems to be disproportionately belabored, while in comparison, Barbie's involvement with drug trafficking and the killing of Che was just touched upon in passing. Karma did catch up with Klaus in his family life, but all in all, for an inherently evil man, he had a long and fulfilling life up until his incarceration. The slant of the book does not reflect that Tom Bower has a Jewish background, but as for being an Englishman, well- - - -

This is a searching biography of a Nazi killer who got away with it, having had help from the U.S. Government because it needed the expertise of Barbie and other Nazis in the cold war against the Soviet Union. The U.S. used Barbie's talents in intelligence gathering to promote its own agenda during this time, as it used other Nazi specialists. Barbie had been a member of the Gestapo, the best counter-intelligence police in the history of the world, and his professionalism served the U.S. well.

It is so unbelievable to me that people like Barbie feel they did nothing wrong. This book gave me an insight into the mind of a madman. I always had an interest in the Pacific operation of WW2, but after reading books like this, I have seen the horrors that so many innocent families endured. I recommend this book for anyone who wants to see how these monsters committed terrible crimes and have no remorse.

And America collaborated with th monster after the war! How could our officials not be charged for hair oring a war criminal?
