On July 1, 1898, TR and his grizzled band of soldiers will enter the pantheon of American heroes at a place in Cuba called San Juan Hill...After the Spanish-American War, TR returns to New York and runs for Governor. Written by a brilliant biographer, this book traces the early life of Roosevelt from 1858 to 1901. We see him as a precocious child of a New York aristocratic family, learn of his fascination with nature, particularly insects, and later his travels with parents to the Continent. We see his inquiring, thorough mind as an adolescent, his determination to be healthy and so learning to box; and more travel with his family to the Middle East and Africa, where he is exposed to not only new cultures, but strenuous travel. Eventually he enters Harvard where he finds strengths in science, geography and history shine and weaknesses in math and Latin and Greek; and considers becoming a scientists. He continues to build his body and becomes extremely self-disciplined. Throughout his youth his father is closest to him; and the death of his father is shattering to him. He continues to work on his body-building, taking up rowing until he is tan and forcing himself physically, and meets Alice Hathaway Lee. Out of college, he begins to reconsider his eventual occupation, drawn to politics. During a winter trip to Maine, his health improved; and he discovered he particularly liked talking to those who worked and lived there –“real men.” These growing years thus set the tone for a lifetime of pushing himself to be physically fit, exploring the extremes of climate and nature’s challenges, talking and learning from the “common man” in each environment he travels and lives in. He discovers the joy of hunting, writing history (especially naval history), ranching and cattle raising, fighting and being a soldier and leader of fighting men. We see him plunge into life, from the “Wild West”—the Dakotas—to the jungles of Cuba. His robust enthusiasm for life grows, his fascination with politics grows, his confidence and magnetism grow. He climbs up the political ladder until he becomes the “Boy Governor” of New York, and later Vice-President of the United States-- just as McKinley is shot and dies. Roosevelt was 42 years old when he became President.

There's not really much I can add to the other tons of glowing reports on this book, but I would encourage anyone with an interest in Teddy (he hated being called that!) Roosevelt to read it.I don't believe you need to be a history buff to get into this book, but in all likelihood only those who have such an interest will pick it up. I found it so interesting that I immediately downloaded the second book in the series, "Theodore Rex."There were so many things to enjoy about this book. Not only was the writing absolutely fluid, but it was also written in such a way as to appeal to a broad audience. Though a scholarly work, it wasn't written to appeal only to graduate students in history, but instead it was written to appeal to the masses.The photos were a wonderful addition, as well. This book was amply researched and I was so happy to see all the original letters, diaries, and newspapers quoted.If you really want to get to know Theodore Roosevelt, then read this book! As I stated previously, I'm on the second one in the series and as soon as that's done I'm buying the third. I have over 120 ebooks on my tablet, and I methodically read them in alphabetical order, but when I downloaded "The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt" I read the first few pages and couldn't put it down. I read a great many books on a variety of topics, but this is really one of those rare books which has kept me spellbound and not a little disappointed when it ended.

Kurlansnky writes, "By 1880, New York was the undisputed capital of history's greatest oyster boom in its golden age, which lasted until at least 1910. The oyster beds of the New York area were producing 700 million oysters a year."The first blow to oyster production was sewage. "The reality is that millions of people produce far too much sewage to co-exist with millions of oysters...A million times worse than pollution happened. The silt and sludge alone would have been enough to kill oysters, which would sink in it and suffocate. But the industrial wastes consisted of heavy metals, including seven thousand pounds of zinc, copper, lead chromium, and nickel that entered the city sewer system every day...Between the 1940's and the 1970's, General Electric dumped hundreds of thousand of pounds of polycholorinated biphenyls, PCBs, into the Hudson..Concentrations of six heavy metals were found in the 1980's in the central muddy portion of the bay (Raritan). They had entered the water from the many factories built on the Raritan Rover during World War II. With the sentiment "anything for the war effort," these industries were allowed to freely dump into the river, and the practice continued after the war. In 1978, Raritan Bay was found to have the highest concentration of hydrocarbons. Fish in the bay were found to be laced with PCBs. The fish were often misshapen by a pollution-caused disease known as "fin-erosion disease." Some great stories here and some surprising relationships of spiritual practices/influences. This is largely a collection of personal essays so the takeaway for me is really just having the privilege to hear very personal stories of spiritual journeys, mostly told by Unitarian ministers. I say privilege because a free and open search for truth and meaning isn't always pretty or comfortable and these shard stories talk about those journeys with humility and honesty.

This book offers UU members insight to the Buddhist practice within the congregation. For Buddhists seeking to explore the Dharma in action, the benefits for becoming a UU member are well articulated.

A great book - poorly formatted as an ebook for the price though. Lots of spacing and font- conversion errors. When will Kindle start enforcing higher standards for epublication format? Seems like we have no recourse when this happens.

This book was both a delightful read and an eye-opener. If you've ever wondered what it would be like to actually use Buddhist practices to deepen or broaden Christian or Humanist practices, this book is for you. Each chapter is a short essay by a different person who has done just that, mostly Unitarian Universalist ministers of the last half century.As a UU who has read about Zen Buddhism and seen Theravada Buddhism first hand (my first wife was from northeast Thailand), I've always been curious about Buddhism, admiring its humility, its sense of inclusion, and devotion to the basic human condition. But I had no idea that the Buddhism popularized by Alan Watts and D.T. Suzuki in American was actually heavily influenced by Unitarianism, which made its way to Japan in the latter half of the 19th century. This amazing story - the stuff of a good movie - begins with the 1841 shipwreck of five Japanese fisherman, their rescue by an American ship, and the journey of one of them, Nakahama Manjiro, who eventually returns to Japan, steeped in Unitarianism, avoiding the execution that was the lot of Catholic missionaries, by his willingness to step on an image of the Virgin Mary.Most of the rest of the book is about how individual UUs developed practices of Buddhist meditation and mindfulness under the guidance of mentors or masters from different Buddhist traditions. This has generally worked well when individuals have engaged in regular Buddhist retreats and local support groups, but it has been more difficult to fit Buddhist practices into the format of traditional Protestant church services. Moreover, the chapter by a Chinese Buddhist remarks that these demanding and individualistic American Buddhist practices are only a small part of the Buddhism, such as Pure Land Buddhism, practiced by most Asians. In the popular Asian tradition, temples are always open for people to receive blessings and earn merit by coming in with alms for the monks, or offerings for various deities or ancestors, or to participate in chantings or celebrations, or to consult with the monks, or to help out with various tasks, etc.For example, my first wife often took offerings to Nahng Torwahnee, the earth goddess from a pre-Buddhist spirit tradition, and was a regular helper at the Thai Wat. My youngest daughter recently had a UU wedding in one location, then three wedding ceremonies (Buddhist, Lao, and Thai) in one day at the Wat, with the monks leading the Buddhist ceremony in Pali, while elders led the Lao and Thai ceremonies. I noted that Nahng Torwahnee was invoked in the Lao ceremony, which included the blessing of tying strings around the wrist. Such diverse and inclusive Buddhist traditions will probably be reserved for ethnic groups, along with the institution of the Wat, despite the need for more practices of generosity, devotion, and community building in UU circles. Instead the trend, as documented in this book, is toward UU influenced philosophical and meditative practices from Buddhism gradually becoming part of mainstream spiritual practices under the leadership of ministers and others who are developing new spiritual communities. This book may even inspire you to join this movement.

This is a really important book. However, the list price is $14 and it is available from the UUA Bookstore, online.
