This is an astounding chronicle, in equally evocative words and photographs, of life in the rural South amid the Great Depression. I purchased this as research for a stage production of To Kill a Mockingbird, which takes place in that time period in fictional Maycomb County, AL. I had never read the book before, although I was familiar with some of Walker Evans' photographs. I am completely blown away.

This work is touted by some as "one of the twentieth century's greatest pieces of literature." I wouldn't go that far, but the photos are incredible and I have to say the reader is placed right inside the tenant farmer's (Alabama) house and in the fields he tends. The time is the mid-1930s, in the depths of the Great Depression. Tenant farmers down South are struggling with deepening debt, chronic illnesses in their families (NO health care), land that is not arrable, and the hopeless, grinding poverty much of America suffered through in that era. The author, at times, sounds like he is attempting to imitate William Faulkner. The writing in places is highly complex, stream of consciousness stuff in some places. I like the book a lot but the reader must be very patient and willing to read methodically. It's not a breezy kind of style. It will also break your heart. The tenant farmer certainly had a rough go of it. Makes you wonder how much of this country is still in such dire straits.

Wow is this book a roller coaster ride. For me It went from deeply affecting and beautifully poetic to tedious and annoying. For a while I honestly thought this might be the best book I ever read. Then the pace slows . . . or stops even . . . as if you're spacing out along with the author and fixating on a floorboard or cheap picture on the wall. And then it seems like the author hands over the wheel to the photographer, who writes whatever pops into his head for pages upon pages. Or maybe its the same dude writing, in an altered state of mind, I'm not sure.Anyway, to me this book is brave and profound. The brave part is the author's refusal to cash in on this experience by writing what he thinks we (or his bosses) want to hear. But then again he pretty much betrays his trusting hosts by snooping through their stuff and writing real personal stuff surely without their permission. The profoundness to me is the effective relaying of dignity amid the tragedy of a truly trapped situation. If you have ever over-romanticized the south of old, or poor farm life, this book should cure you for good. It's not all perfect, but parts of it are. I would say its definitely worth the trip . . . just be ready for some detours.

It's hard to explain the power of this book. It's a cultural snapshot, but it's also a personal accounting of the coming-together of two cultures, one sophisticated, the other less so. It is the "less so" that is compelling. Highly recommend.

One of the three books that have deeply influenced my life. From Agee's passionate prose and Evans's clear-eyed photographs, one can arrive at a deep understanding of what it means to be human, if understanding is a possibility.

Book is excellent but very deep. I found myself re-reading from time to time.Reader be prepared for the author's projection of how he views the world and at times not so much about the subjects in his observations.I think his advantage is being a New Yorker allowing him to see a world that is so foreign to him. Whereas a Southerner as myself would view more as not being odd or abnormal.

Photos by Walker Evans and text by James Agee...how could this not be excellent! Incredibly moving. Let us honor those merely trying to survive and feed their families .... for them, a meal is the ultimate trial. Agee and Walker's work centered around the working, and literally dirt poor in America, which should be a bounty of opportunity, some 70 years ago....and this is still a timeless story, there are STILL too many families living on the edge their entire lives. I hope this remarkable work never goes out of print, it's difficult to find now, thank goodness for Amazon.

I was assigned to read this book in college. Historically, I've loathed anything I've ever been REQUIRED to read; I prefer to come to the decision as to whether or not I am going to read something on my own. However, I was very much hooked on this book within the first thirty pages or so. Now, having read it twice, it is easily in my top 5 favorite books ever. While the book explores the day to day lives of some of the poorest to come out of extreme rural Alabama, the presentation is rather depth of content is what keeps me reading. Agee's words manage to mix more perception and mental connection than a journalistic account of what he and Walker experience. If you pace your reading and reference the photos as they are featured in the text (because they are grouped together in the middle, or at least they were in the edition I have), then it provides insight into Agee's level of perception...almost like when you ask someone if you can borrow their prescription glasses.I can't recommend this enough. I can't assure you will enjoy it, because it is a lot more than what it looks and reads like at first...but it is certainly in no way a waste of your time and money to experience.

Pretty straight forward music theory. Good first time introduction or good review of music theory. Definitely a good primer for further study. I'm going to use it as an outline for study. Not to wordy and easy to understand. One of the best beginning theory/work books I've seen or used.

I bought this for my wife so she can learn basic music theory as she learns playing the uke. I already know much of music theory and quickly read through this book and found it does contain the fundamentals of music theory. However, because it does not go into much depth or explanation for each topic I see this more of course material where someone knowledgeable is doing the teaching and explaining and using this book as a reference. While not the worse, if you're looking to learn music theory on your own there are better books out there.

Great theory book for review of my students that I've taught since they were young and now are leaving for college. It has let me know where they are missing info from the past and filling it in before heading to music schools around the country. It is comprehensive and sequential (which I love in all things!). Thanks to Sandy Feldstein for doing such a great job!

This is laid out very well. The textbook has written exercises in it and could be used as a supplement to most any other piano instruction. My daughter took eight years of piano and felt her theory was a little weak, so we bought this book. She has said it has helped her read music more fluently. The book goes from very very simple theory, to advanced concepts.

Similar to another reviewer, I'm a 60+ beginning guitarist, looking for a music theory tutorial. I've been disappointed by 'Guitatar Theory For Dummies', found it to poorly written from an instructional point of view. Example: At the end of a chapter, a series of questions caused me to search fruitlessly for answers I must have missed, only to learn that NONE of the questions was covered in the chapter! The questions are posed as a tease for following chapters.Practical Theory is clearly written, obviously by an experienced teacher for the sole purpose of instruction. Each subject is clearly laid out and then then drilled in by a series of exercises. I've learned more in a few evenings with this book than I've ever been able to understand from 'Dummies' or multiple internet sources. Highly recommend it!

I have used Sandy Feldstein's Practical Theory Complete for many years. As a private voice & piano teacher, I appreciate that this is a theory text that is accessible to beginner students, young and old, and as a refresher for those who know the basic music language. The format of the book, three clear explanations with practice then a review of the three "lessons" is helpful in the pace for the younger and to use as a Review Test with practical exercises to follow up with for those with knowledge of music. I also appreciate the "complete" volume because I can offer the savings to my students of purchasing all the volumes in one complete text. Thorough basic music theory knowledge is presented from note values to circle of 5ths in a great order for the end result of the student composing basic music. This text is a good opener to learning the vocabulary of the music language.

Great basic, basic book for adults! Very hard to find something like this. I teach in a University Music Department. Sometimes we get students who have never seen sheet music. They go into Music Theory 1, but they need some remedial theory, and most of it is designed for 5 year olds. I love these books.

As an adult beginner lute player, I am really thrilled with this book. I took piano as a kid but never learned any theory, and I wanted something that was thorough but not too complex; something that would allow me to understand what the other musicians are talking about when I play in an ensemble. This book is perfect; you can do each lesson in about 10 minutes, then there's a review quiz at the end of every section, and you correct your answers with the key in the back of the book. It's definitely not a substitute for a college-level music theory course, but for the serious amateur musician, it's great.

I'm a beginner learning music and this is a great way to begin....It will bring you from the very basic to much more complicated music theory..such as transposing etc. Highly recommend.

#3,098,553 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

A few years after the conclusion of Desert Storm, four veterans of that war decided to get together and write a memoir of their experiences. Eventually they added a fifth member. What distinguishes them was that all five served as platoon commanders in a single Armor battalion that was a part of the 24th infantry Division. This division conducted the "left hook" campaign where they entered Iraq in the desert, raced to the main Basra - Baghdad roads, and blocked them so the Iraqi Army could not retreat. Four of these Lieutenants graduated in the same West Point class and so knew each other even before the war, and by the time Desert Shield started, they had already been in command of their platoons for almost a year. Nonetheless, they were still relatively junior 2nd Lieutenants who directly led their platoons from the hatch of an M1 tank or from a Bradley fighting vehicle. The period that this book encompasses starts from when the 24th Division went on alert to deploy to Saudi Arabia until they return home to Fort Stewart, Georgia. A final chapter allows each of them to reflect back on their experiences in the intervening six years and update the readers on what happened to them since the war ended. The main parts of the book divide into the activities of Desert Shield; the activities during Desert Storm, and then their reflections. Each of these parts tells its story in a mélange of stories and recollections from each of the five authors intermingled with each other. It is sometimes unclear who is telling what story. However, one of the positive (and very interesting) attributes of this style of writing is that sometimes the same event or anecdote is told from different perspectives and you can try to piece together what really happened yourself. We start with reading about Desert Shield. The five authors deploy to be the initial elements of the U.S. Army in Saudi Arabia with the intention of making the Iraqi forces fight them if they attack into Saudi Arabia. Of course, the authors realize that they are no more than a speed bump to the Iraqi army that was the fourth largest army in the world at the time - while they are only one small Battalion. Nonetheless, they deploy to some points in Saudi Arabia miles away from the border and set up defensive positions. As additional units deploy, they move to a different area where they establish their camps. During this six-month period, they are essentially acclimatizing to the environmental conditions of the Saudi desert and training. This training was much more valuable to them in the end than what they undertook in the U.S. as they kept together as a unit and did not have to deal with the distraction of personnel shifts nor with the myriad other activities that a peacetime army does. As I read these pages, it was clear though that the main enemy they were facing was simple boredom. The lack of information shared with them is amazing. One story they tell is when they perform a training exercise in the desert behind their camp and almost collide with a parked Helicopter unit, since they had no idea they were there!Desert Storm arrives and with it comes the certainty that they will be in the front of the battle line. During the Air War phase, there is nothing much for them to do but they do move forward to an advanced position and the author who leads a Scout Platoon is ordered to take his people and scout out the Iraqi side of the border - moving forward as much as six miles into Iraq. When the ground phase launches, the whole division races through the desert to attain its various objectives. In the case of the Battalion that we are following, the majority of the time they are moving forward and they only get involved in a single combat situation in the Jalibah Airfield. At this stage, we read each Lieutenant's individual viewpoint. Following this battle, the Battalion continues to move forward, reaches its main objective, and stops there while the initial cease-fire takes place. Individual skirmishes still take place even after the official Cease Fire, but eventually the war is over and the unit quickly repatriates back to Georgia. The stories they tell of the battles, of the various incidents that took place as they were in motion throughout the 100 hours of the ground war, and their different views of it are absolutely fascinating. What becomes abundantly clear is that they are simple little cogs in this huge machine. They do not know much about what they are doing nor why as they are simply told to move to a certain point and deploy in a certain method. Then, once there, move on again to another point, and so forth. The battle on the Airfield from their viewpoint was a sweep across it from one side to the other, shooting at anything that looked like an active Iraqi - whether in a vehicle, or on foot. What is particularly sad, is that each time there are American casualties (with only one exception), those casualties are caused by mistaken identity in the heat of action and are friendly fire incidents. I cannot recall one situation where the Iraqis managed to kill any of the American soldiers.Following the Homecoming come the reflections of the authors. What I found striking here, is that within a very short time from the end of the war, three of the five have left the Army as they were extremely dissatisfied and could not see themselves continuing to serve. A fourth joins them shortly after they start writing this book so that by the time it is published, only one of the five is still in the Army. They each explain their reasoning and it is clear that having experienced combat, being part of a peacetime army is simply not challenging enough for them. This is a shame, as they indicate that they are quite representative of the bigger picture - when a very large percentage of young combat-experienced officers chose to leave and pursue civilian careers rather than stay with an Army that could dearly use their experience. This book was on the U.S. Army's Chief of Staff Reading List to allow junior leaders (like Platoon Commanders) to understand what war is really like in this day and age. While it has its warts, it is still a very important read for anyone who wants to understand what Army life is like during peace and war, and what war is like for a Platoon Commander. You are on the front line, you are shooting at the enemy, but you have a very vague idea of where you are going and why. This book deserves its five star rating for conveying this picture in a very vivid way.

What I liked about this book was how it took you through every stage of a deployment. Starting in Hinesville, GA to the Persian Gulf and back to Hinesville. Too many books these days glorify war stories but this book is more of a deployment story and a story of what a LT is thinking when challenges surface. I am a newly commissioned Armor Officer and this book is helpful. What I did not like about the book was the skipping around from one author to the next without clarity in who is speaking. Another thing is that most of these officers seem awfully proud they went to West Point, it is mentioned in too many of the paragraphs. Not that they shouldn't be proud of having gone there, but they sort of belittle their comrades from OCS and ROTC with their comments.

First let me say that the author's writing style was somewhat annoying. He weaves together the tales of five lieutenants during the war. The tales are all great but he does a poor job of letting you know whose tale you a reading. It takes some extra effort to figure this out the first third of the book or so until you get to know the folks in the book well enough. Now having said that, the book is an excellent and almost painfully honest look at what it is like to lead mean into battle. All of the fears of the unkown as well as deeds done are included here.If you are going to be an officer in the military (or think you might like to be) or recently became one you need to read this book. You will appreciate the honest tales that let you know that your own feelings are not unique and what it truly takes to be a leader.

A GREAT BOOK!!!!!!! What more can be said.....this book portrays all that war is about ; boredom, drudgery, monotony, but also the sheer joy and excitement of simply recieving some mail or a package from home. Or the chance to get to a recreation center and actually CALL HOME !!!!! I was a little amazed that some of these reviews disparage former Lt. Vernon and his coauthors as "whiners" ( ?????) They are just normal men ,West Pointers or not, confronting their fears and doubts, but overcoming them, because this is their job, and their men, and the Army, are counting on them. This book shows the psychological and morale effects of Desert Shield, when 18th Airborne Corps units went into the desert to set up an initial defense of Saudi Arabia, after Iraq's invasion of Kuwait. And finally, somewhat to the relief of all, Desert Storm kicks off, releasing the frustration and tension of all those months of training and waiting, for all this to move to a final resolution, so these men can return home. And ,also, that they can prove themselves to be the professional soldiers the Army has developed them to be.I think this is one of the finest books on soldiers and war that has ever been written, period. I give it 10 stars.

Great Read!

ok

This book was as good as new... amazing service! The pages and the cover were in great quality. This is a very good concise book for histology

If you use First Aid for the the USMLE Step 1, you probably will not use this book. There is a lot of "low yield" information disperese throughout and it may not save you much time to filter through all of it to make it worth while. If you insist, read through it fast and note the clinically significant items in boldface.

I find this books enlightening and inspiring. It is the first work that by this author that I've read and am grateful that a friend recommended it to me.

Stick to the histology Road Maps. Most of the High Yield Series is good except this one. The pictures and explanations leave too much room for wanting something else.

I did not have chance to enjoy this book because Green Street Books sent me very bad copy of this book, overwritten pages that I can never read from them, so I threw it a way , I am very upset with this bad experience I had with amazon..I learnt a lesson that before I buy any book from any sellar dealing with amazon should choose one with high rating.

This was a disappointment because it was a 1997 version. I will not buy from this vendor again. This was not in the advertisement.

This is not a typical histology book...in the sense that it contains, pharmacology, pathology, physiology and anatomy and very little histology and histopathology. The book is extremely HIGH YIELD for usmle but not for a class in histology. It covers topics ranging molecular biology of signal transduction to the coagulation cascade. First year medical students will not recognize much of the info in this book and think it is "fluff"....it is one of the best kept secrets to scoring high in the USMLE, since many of the questions aren't exactly pathology or physiology stand alone questions, rather they are a mixture and a blend of many subjects. This book does that for you, it integrates many..many concepts. Its a great buy for 2nd years.

From the Inside Flap

The compassion of Reb Moshe-Leib, the vision of the Seer of Lublin, the wisdom of Reb Pinhas, the warmth of the Ba'al Shem Tov, the humor of Reb Naphtali-to their followers these sages appeared as kings, judges, and prophets. They communicated joy and wonder and fervor to the men and women who came to them in the depths of despair. They brought love and compassion to the persecuted Jews of Russia, Ukraine, Poland, and Lithuania. For Jews who felt abandoned and forsaken by God, these Hasidic masters incarnated an irresistible call to help and salvation. The Rebbe combats sorrow with exuberance. He defeats resignation by exalting belief. He creates happiness so as not to yield to the sadness around him. He tells stories to escape the temptations of irreducible silence. It is Elie Wiesel's unique gift to make the lives and tales of these great teachers as compelling now as they were in a different time and place. In the tradition of Hasidism itself, he leaves others to struggle with questions of justice, mercy, and vengeance, providing us instead with eternal truths and unshakable faith.

It would be easy and lazy to label Elie Wiesel’s Somewhere a Master: Hasidic Portraits and Legends as mere hagiography: simple stories of saintly man without human flaws. But this collection of stories and tales belies hagiography.Wiesel takes these figures, brings them to life, and maintains their human complexity. Hasidic rebbes were public figures. They had followers and students. This came with a great cost. The need for solitude and connection to G-d was strong, and often stymied because of their functions as rebbes.Wiesel observes that nearly every master died in some state of despair. Often, it is not clear why, but Wiesel seems to be telling us that these men, who gave so much to their people, lost things in life through their service; this brought some measure of despair at the end.

Even this atheist loved this book.

came quickly, looks brand new, a great book to read
