Great book. A true story of the importance of faith in God which can help overcome the gravest of evils and puts dealing with difficulties and troubles in perspective. He was true to God's command to love your enemies even after 23 years of hardship and persecution.Looking forward to reading the other book "He Leadeth Me".

I read this a month ago and am still reflecting on it. I am left with the impression that his strong character, his ability to work hard and his humility were as important as his faith in surviving his epic struggle and deprivations. A captor told him "I do not know why you are still alive." He was witness to massive upheaval, injustice and suffering. He suffered with millions of others. He gave what he could: spiritual guidance/solace, the example of perseverance and friendship. Remarkably, not bitter. A fascinating life.

This book was a fascinating account of an American's years in solitary confinement and Siberian slave labor camps. The author's perseverance and trust in God is compelling. Any time I reflect back on the book, I feel grateful for the many comforts I enjoy. This is a sure-fire cure to complaining!

This was a wonderful read. Inspiring moments. I couldn't put it down. Amazing in that he was able to withstand and live all those years in prison, gulag hard labor in Siberian winters, and throughout his ordeal he never lost his faith in God.

An amazing biography about an amazing man, who will one day be canonized. A great book for anyone interested, and all should be interested, in drawing closer to God and receive the unshakable peace that can only come from Him.

In this book, Battle delineates how he believes it can be a "gift to the West."Ubuntu is a difficult word to translate. It is a simple yet incredibly profound concept - that I am a person because I recognize others as persons, that we are all inextricably linked to one another and share a common humanity. Although it may ostensibly appear that there is some dissonance between Ubuntu and Western individualism, Battle argues that Ubuntu, which demands interdependence, paradoxically helps us express true individuality because "each individual's humanity is ideally expressed in relationship with others."So why is Ubuntu important? Battle argues that it "reorients our vision." He writes, "[w]e cannot see ourselves as primarily white people, black people, Irish people, women, men, low income, gay, conservative...we must learn to see self in the other." The paradigm of excessive narcissism, which appears pervasive in the West, is broken by Ubuntu. Ubuntu helps us see our own flaws and not merely the flaws of others. To substantiate these arguments, Battle retells Tutu's struggle against apartheid ("South Africa - black and white - can be human together and will defy tyranny only by first living together").Overall, I wholeheartedly recommend Battle's book, but I should warn readers that it does come with one caveat: strong Anglo-Christian undertones. Although I myself am an Episcopalian, I found this to be a slight distraction. Readers who want to read a more secular and academic assessment of Ubuntu should read Battle's other book, Reconciliation: The Ubuntu Theology of Desmond Tutu.

I have taken economics in college, and of course, we have all heard bout the 'invisible hand' of the market, and the law of supply and demand, etc. etc., but for most of us, this does not really explain (or make sense, frankly) what is happening. Prof. Varoufakis explains the reality so we can understand the problem, and possibly, know the way to solve the problems that beset us. Ignorance is not bliss; we need real facts and knowledge, and we need to know who the enemy of financial freedom is and how we can get out from under. When we read economics as taught to most of us, we read about how if supply exceeds demand, then the pendulum swings so as to correct this, but what does that mean to real people depending on wages to live and exist in our society? We must understand that ours is a system that is set up to enrich the rich, and extract from the rest of us. Until we understand this and then get it changed we continue to be slaves to our system and those who make the rules.

Despite repeated attempts at self-education, I have remained a financial illiterate my whole adult life. Read any standard economics text and it will discuss supply curves and demand curves as if they were (usually linear) mathematical functions. Fine. Linear functions are easy to understand. The problem is that even these simple ideas don't give a true explanation of the economic world we lived in. Between May 19 and May 20, the demand for automotive fuels didn't really change, but the price will reliably take a jump. The slick, nearly mathematical texts just don't line up to reality---and you can take examples from almost anywhere. This is a clear book that gives a coherent introduction to the qualitative aspects of economics, something that any person could understand---even a financial illiterate. Is everything he says correct? I don't know. That's why I'm illiterate. Certainly it is not complete, but the ideas are coherent and give a reasonable foundation from which to begin to form a better understanding. This guy isn't the pompous idiot that most economists seem to be.

Varoufakis breathes life into the phrase, "if you can't explain something to a child, then you don't really understand it yourself" by turning it from a simple adage into practical application in this unambiguous book about capitalism and economics. His analogies and effort to make the reader understand the content instead of trying to patronizingly exert his knowledge over the reader makes this an engaging and very educational read.

Where was this guy when I was struggling to put my finger on what's wrong with the way economics is taught in U.S. colleges? The author provides fantastic historical perspective and excellent explanations of seemingly complex concepts in everyday language.

This is a great book that outlines how the economy works in pretty clear and simple terms. It was an enjoyable read and was interesting. Obviously, by the title, it was written with a young audience in mind, but anyone who doesn't have a lot knowledge about economics, but is interested in learning about it, would enjoy this book.

Brilliant book. Well written and fun to read which is a veritable accomplishment for a book on economics. Historical, mythological and literary references illuminate beautifully economic principles.

For me this book succeed in creating an introduction to the economics and how it is intertwined with our most pressing questions of the day.Even though I am teaching in an Asian country its questions and answers are equally relevant.

Enough good info to keep one busy for a long time!

Great Book.

Top Tens are much better but there is not one covering Dallas & Fort Worth

Disappointing. This book was very general. All information was things that could easily be pulled up on any top 10 internet search. Many places of interest did not include an address, price or hours. Would have also liked to have seen off-beat places, more historical background, and tips such as regarding best times and things to avoid (other than avoid the hot summer).

Although I have had great luck with the Access books, I chose this one based on the reviews. I wish I had gone with my gut. The coverage of Fort Worth and Dallas was very superficial...just enough to get you to the visitor's center where you could get much better information. There was scant mention of the suburbs, some of which we liked better than Dallas and Fort worth. The maps were quite good however to give the big picture. If this book was more inclusive in its next edition, if has the potential be great. That's just my humble opinion.

This is the BEST travel book I've read in many years! If you are planning a trip to the Dallas/Fort Worth area anytime soon, don't go without it. It also makes a great gift for someone living in the area. Know anyone going to the Super Bowl next year?

Pretty good novel. Jay Allan has given us a lot of space combat lately with Crimson Worlds Refugees and Dauntless books, but here we get a good ground pounding Marines save the world adventure.We have our retired, respected general who just wants to settle down and enjoy the peaceful tranquility of working his farm. He knows the government isn't always shall we say honest or fair but he's willing to do his own thing so long as he's left alone. Unfortunately, a large chunk of the civilian population isn't willing to overlook the Federal government's failings and think a fresh start is their best approach.Rather than deal with the civilian unrest productively, the corrupt government decides to send in troops to smash down doors and make an example of the planet... and they won't leave him or his ex-military neighbors out of it. Big mistake ;)

Jay Allan has quite a few military Sci Fi books out, one of the serial writers that have become popular over the past 10 years, made possible in large part due to ebooks. Not my favorite but a good read and this book and just released Rebelion’s Fury are Allan’s best yet, has a more polished, better written feel to the story and the editing seems improved. Not a Jerry Pournelle { I’m willing to wager Mr. Allan has read Jerry and Larry ] but all in all, I look forward to new releases and enjoy Allan’s stories.

Jay Allan accomplished what he wanted with this story. The action on both ends of the story kept my interest and kept flowing throughout. Overall a good read and good enough to. encourage me to get the next addition.

Many were sent to prison for petty crimes and faced with many years of hard labor with little hope of ever being free again.Other citizens are unhappy with the heavy burden of taxes and little opportunity for true freedom. Citizen leaders have been investing some of their wealth in buying weapons and preparing the people to start a rebellion to declare their independence from Federal America and develop a free society and have a better life. The inhabitants of Haven want true freedom and not to live as another example of how the people of Earth are treated.Federal America sends a space fleet with thousands of riot police and paramilitary soldiers to stop the rebellion. They know that if Haven rebels then other colonies will follow. The cash flow and wealth to Earth will stop and that just cannot be allowed. They send a vicious replacement for the passive planetary Governor and a spiteful and cruel military leader to crush the rebels before they can start a war…….This is a very good book. It is an in-depth story with great character development and a good plot line. The writing is excellent and the action builds throughout the book. Jay Allan is an excellent writer and he can tell a story that really holds my interest. It is obvious that this book is a prequel to a series and I can't wait to read the next installment in the saga. I like this book and I rated it at 5 stars.I enjoyed reading the book and I recommend it to you.

I'm a big Jay Allen fan and have read much of what he has written and I've enjoyed it all. With that in mind, I may need to come back and up my rating to five stars after reading the sequels to Flames of Rebellion. I felt that the first two-thirds of the book were were so consumed with backstory that the action in the last third was inadequate to balance things out. Unlike the first books in Jay's other collections, this one doesn't stand alone as well and feels somewhat like a prologue. However, I am looking forward to reading the next book(s) in this collection and I'm prepared to raise the rating on this book to 5 stars if I determine in retrospect that I judged it too harshly.

I sincerely wish that this author would include a list of characters, and other helpful info, like as of ships or families or whatever is important to the book for readers' reference.

Anybody familiar with the Barash's Clinical Anesthesia knows that it is probably the single book with the most information on all aspects of anesthesia in your library. You know that oftentimes there is just too much information to quickly obtain the need-to-know big-picture information. That is where this handbook comes in.It succinctly offers a summary of the most important information in Barash. The Handbook makes heavy use of tables and charts (many, but not all, of them directly from Barash). I am using the Handbook as a study guide and quick reference, and if any questions remain, I go to Barash. This is very convenient to do as the chapter numbers between the two resources correlate perfectly.In my opinion, if your school (or your practice) involves the use of Barash's Clinical Anesthesia, purchasing this handbook should be a no-brainer.

Great Clinical pocket reference, except it may be a little bigger than your pocket. Also, can be used if you just don't have time to read the big Barash because it leaves out all the studies and puts somethings (essentials) in simpler terms. I love this reference. If you really want to minimize it can be bought as an app for your smart phone, but I still like this better.

I took a 150 mile journey with my dog on the Missouri and this book was a great addition. Very interesting mile by mile history of the area.

With Glenn's book we were well prepared for our float trip of the Upper Missouri, following in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark's expedition.

Good condition.

This book is pretty, but not a very good river trip resource.

I haven't gotten into it yet so can't give an informed review. It appears to provide a lot of useful information that should be of value and also expand the enjoyment of my anticipated trip with a lot of historical and natural history details.

One of the co-authors of this book operates a river outfitting business, Upper Missouri River Guides, and thus has first hand knowledge of the Upper Missouri; the second co-author worked as a Bureau of Land Management River Manager for the Upper Missouri, and is a past president of the non-profit National Association for Interpretation.This book is the only available guide book for Montana's Upper Missouri National Wild and Scenic River, and the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. And one will not see grizzly bear or buffalo as documented by the Expedition in what was then Montana Territory.For travelers who are canoeing, rafting or exploring outcroppings on foot, Monahan gives a play-by-play of scenic changes and their identification. His historical accounts and pictures satisfy curiosity and bridge a 200-year gap.

The other 120 or so pages, the actual commentary by Brunnhölzl is more loosely written and while still quite rewarding, but not as succinct as the introduction, IMO.It is clear that Brunnhölzl practices what he preaches, so to speak, and his writing represents, as mentioned, some actual dharma realization on his part. How welcome!If I have any criticisms of this book, they are few. Brunnhölzl’s style of writing is very consistent, but perhaps that consistency deserves IMO a little more variation or “breathing” (like expanding and narrowing of the scope) that resuscitates the reader as we dig through his meaningful text. At least I find this true of the commentary section.And my other criticism is that the great many analogies, etc., while they liven up the texts, are a little mundane. I wish they were more poetical.Other than that, this book is a good sign of what I look for in modern Western Buddhism. Years ago, when I asked my Rinpoche when we could stop doing our practice in Tibetan and use English, his answer was that it would take time and we are waiting for Americans to enlighten themselves and write our own texts and sadhanas. Hmmm. That had not occurred to me. LOL.

Life changing book, because it changes your view of "reality." It delves into the heart sutra, and explains "emptiness". It was recommended by Pema Chodron, otherwise I never would have chosen it bc of the odd title.

Who knew the Heart Sutra would be so much fun to explore? The examples used in this book were easy to work with, like how the author talked in depth about how we misinterpret the word 'empty' and all the connotations we put on it, like 'empty wallet'. He did not dumb down this compact sutra, but rather he elevated the way I think about it. I've loaned out my copy to a friend, and am thinking of buying another for my own reference in case I don't get it back. It is well worth reading, and more than once. I am delighted to find an explanation of the Heart Sutra that is both meaty and manageable.

It's very readable, and the author appears to have read all the prior commentaries, so he sums up what has been said before, explains the issues clearly, and makes a convincing case as to why the sutra is so significant. I learned a great deal and it held my attention.

When seeing this book, one might perhaps have two mistaken ideas. One is saying: "Why another commentary on the Heart Sutra? Aren't there many already?" Another mistaken thought could be: "The books by Khenpo Karl Brunnhölzl are too technical, too difficult; this is not for me." When you open the Heart Attack Sutra book, you will find for yourself that both of these expectations are false.The author chose a masterful balance in writing this commentary. On one hand, it is lively, experiential, humorous, and full of practical instructions on how to engage the Heart Sutra as a contemplative manual: how to take the words of the sutra to one's heart on the meditation cushion and how to use the message the ancient sutra conveys in everyday life in today's world. The essence of this approach is captured in this quote from p. 142:"The Heart Sutra is not primarily about all phenomena (be they skandhas or the four noble truths) as objects, but it is always pointing back to our mind as the subject and how it deals with all these objects. How do we deal with our eyes, our ears, our nose, our tongue, and our body? How do we deal with our sense perceptions? How do we deal with our suffering? How do we deal with the causes of suffering? How do we deal with our path?"On the other hand, this is no dharma-lite booklet for bedtime reading. Khenpo Karl brings into his narrative the vast knowledge of the Prajñaparamita sutras commentarial tradition, skillfully quoting definitions, classifications, etymologies and meanings of the technical terms quoted in or associated with the sutra, accompanied by present-day examples elucidating the meaning.The author based his Heart Sutra commentary on the Indian commentaries, selected Tibetan commentaries as well as Chinese and contemporary Western commentaries and he refers to them throughout. He is also relying on his extensive study of the commentaries on both explicit and hidden meaning of Prajñaparamita as evidenced by his voluminous publications of Center of the Sunlit Sky, Gone Beyond I & II and Groundless Paths.As for the content, the book consists of the meaning commentary in the Introduction followed by the word commentary going through each passage. Khenpo Karl comments on a word or a sentence of the sutra from the technical point of view and then illustrates how this passage can be readily used for contemplation, for practice, for spiritual transformation.Finally, the book also includes an instruction on the practice of the Prajñaparamitahridaya Sadhana by Mahasiddha Darika. Even though this sadhana has been translated and commented upon elsewhere (Elaborations on Emptiness, Donald Lopez), without Khenpo Karl's clear practice instructions, it is difficult if not impossible to put this lovely visualization - which is enacting the story of the Heart Sutra, very much like a theatre play - into practice.In sum, when enjoying such balance between precision and readability, a miracle of a sort happens: while reading this book, you are drawn into the narrative as if wanting to finish it in one sitting - like a detective story with a humorous undertone - and at the same time you are being served the dharma without compromise, gems of traditional scholarship, which in other contexts would put most people to sleep. But here both approaches not only can coexist side by side, but are even enhancing each other, feeding the fire of prajña arising from such delightful reading. And so one can rightfully ask a question: Isn't the Heart Attack Sutra book an evidence of the genuine western Buddhism actually taking root, where the western approach to narration is employed without compromising on the precision of the traditional discourse? It is, for me. For that reason this is not yet another, redundant commentary, this is a unique masterpiece and is worth reading for all who aspire to be followers of the genuine tradition of the Heart Sutra.This Heart Attack Sutra is truly the attack for the ego's heart and therefore it is a delight for the heart aspiring for freedom.
