About the Author

Chris Crowe was born in Danville, Illinois, and attended schools in Illinois, New Mexico, and California before his parents settled down in Tempe, Arizona, where he graduated from McKemy Junior High and McClintock High School. He attended Brigham Young University on a football scholarship (and played in the 1974 Fiesta Bowl) and earned a BA in English. He taught English at McClintock High for 10 years while attending Arizona State University part-time, earning his masters and doctorate degrees.He is the author of several books, most notably MISSISSIPPI TRIAL, 1955, which won several awards, including the 2003 International Reading Association's Young Adult Novel Award. His nonfiction book, GETTING AWAY WITH MURDER: THE TRUE STORY OF THE EMMETT TILL CASE, was an Jane Addams Honor book. His first children's book, JUST AS GOOD: HOW LARRY DOBY CHANGED AMERICA'S GAME, appeared in 2012. Read it in one sitting! Great book. Interestingly weaves a narrative account of facts and an investigative-feel as Crowe takes you through the maddening case. There's no way you read this book and remain unmoved by what Emmett Till and his mother, Mrs. Till Bradley, endured. Appropriate for my approaching grade-level Freshmen readers, though it's actually geared for Middle School the content just seemed too heavy for me to think the younger age group is appropriate.

I have used this text for several years in my 9th LA class as part of a Civil Rights Unit. My students stay engaged from the beginning to the end, and the text challenges their reading comprehension and their empathy. A must read...Lest we forget!!!

I was born about three months after Emmett was. I remember hearing about his murder at 14. I, too, was 14 and was two hours north in Memphis. Every white person in the U.S. needs to read this story. This is not ancient history, it happened in America in our time.

This book was extremely well-written and knowledgeable about the tragic murder of Emmett Till. There was never a dull moment and it read just like a fictional book. Though, of course, the horrific killing of Till wasn’t fiction.

A tragic and horrendous story, and all true. Happened here in the USA. Very sad commentary on that era in our country's history. It is a famous incident in the civil rights story...very much one to read. The book is in excellent condition, the price was great. I would recommend this seller to others for sure.

This 2004 reprint has some additional material as well as updated statistics for use with 6th edition rules.Player handouts are now in the back of the book, unlike the original where they were all stapled into the middle. NPC, creature and spell statistics have been updated for 6th edition rules. NPC portraits have been added as well as quite a bit of new art.New text has been added such as tables for NPC location/function and charts that "connect" clues, NPCs and locations. Some of the new additions are very helpful for the Keeper in that they present additional NPCs, background material and advice.Overall, I would highly recommend this for new and old players alike. The only complaint I have is the somewhat hard-to-read text/fonts they've used on some of the player handouts.

This is a classic CoC campaign. It's movable from the 1890's to the present, even though it's written for a 1920's era. It would port easily to the 30's, 40's, or 50's without much modification. 1890's or modern would require some modifications, but it's not difficult. It's a fun game with a lot of opportunity to encounter both human and mythos baddies. San checks for all who read this tome.

Quiet a good read, i found the secret society part to be a font of new ideas.

This is a nice scenario book. I can recommend it, having said that it is not perfect. The plot was ok, but not marvelous. A bit to linear and simple, but all in all good.

I admit this series is my favorite scenario set, along with the scenarios in H. P. Lovecraft's Dreamlands (Call of Cthulhu Horror Roleplaying), it is extremely good.I could say it is complete, detailed, inventive, and expressive (swarming with adjectives? -- nope, just this review) -- but that doesn't tell you much.Each scenario telegraphs itself well and is nicely contained.Each scenario set is survivable, consistent, and cleanly laid out and set up. I've been playing and designing FRPGs since 1969 (gagh, with hex paper and chits), contributed to D&D (and edited the Expert Set) and was a playtester for Call of Cthulhu. Some things catch the soul of the game, have proper nuance of plot and could exist in the world as the game imagines it.A good scenario collection is a joy to read as well as to play, fits the themes of both the game and the books the game is based on, and is consistent and intelligent. Once you finish with over a hundred and seventy pages in this bound collection (originally a boxed set, and realize it was done in early 1980s, the collection is amazing.Even now it is five star good.First, it offers two extra scenarios to start a group off with if you need to introduce players to either gaming or to Call of Cthulhu.Next, it has a nicely constructed and well contained mainline of scenarios from the introduction to the hermetic evil order to the final confrontation.It has a complete collection of handouts, music suggestions, and guidance for how to recover when things go astray (Call of Cthulhu allows that to happen).One of the best things about it is that it is thorough and complete. Could it have gone more places and had a little less linear path -- sure, all you need is another hundred pages of text. Within the limits of the page length and the milieu, you couldn't ask for more.Especially at the price this sells for.Still my favorite after all these years.

This 176 page soft cover book is a seven part campaign adventure for the Call of Cthulhu role-playing game. Set in the late 1920's, the scenarios can be played independently or as part of a massive campaign to halt the threat of a sinister cult who is trying to raise the city of R'Lyeh from the ocean's depth and release the Great Old Ones on the world. The campaign is geared towards more experience players although you could take a couple of newbies along as well.In the first scenario, the investigators learn of the Group called the Hermetic Order of the Silver Twilight. The group has a secret cult interior that most of its members do not even know about. The investigators will join the Order and attempt to infiltrate its secret cult in order to discover its sinister intentions.In the second adventure, a new group called "Look to the Future" attempts to finance and carry out the plots of the Silver Twilight. This adventure will result in a player or two taking a short but memorable jaunt into the future.Part three takes the investigators to Scotland and the town of Cannich to encounter witches and the mythical Serpent people, in search of a missing archaeologist who discovers some ancient Pictish ruins and a mysterious disk. A tale influenced by Arthur Machen and Robert E. Howard!The fourth adventure finds the investigators contacted by a Hollywood millionaire who wants them to find out the source of the problems on the set of his new film. They'll encounter ghostly images on an outtake reel and discover the sinister history of Devil's Canyon.From Hollywood to Portland, Maine for the next scenario as the true plots of the Silver Twilight unfold and the investigators are faced with three terrible deathtraps.Scenario six takes the action to one of the most mysterious places on Earth-Easter island and it's massive stone statues in what will be the most dangerous adventure yet.Everything climaxes in "The Rise of R'lyeh" as the investigators travel to that island, now risen from the ocean, for the final battle against the Lords of the Silver Twilight.In addition to these seven connected adventures, the book also provides two additional scenarios geared towards newer players. "People of the Monolith" is based upon "The Black Stone" written by Robert E. Howard in probably his most famous Cthulhu Mythos tale. The other scenario, "The Warren" takes the players to Boston to investigate the deserted Boucher estate and attempt to locate a friend of one of the investigators.While I've been role-playing for over 25 years, I'm a relative newcomer to "Call of Cthulhu". What impresses me most is how great a job the designers do in making things easy on the GM or Keeper. It makes no assumptions that you're already an expert and leads new Keepers like myself along with thorough information. The inclusion of handout materials in the form of mock newspaper articles, telegrams, photos, etc, that can be copied for the players is a great touch and does a far better job of conveying the feelings of suspense and dread than I eve could if I merely tried to describe the action for the players. They realize full well how important mood is to this game and do everything they can to help the keeper convey that to the players. They even provide tips on what kind of music would be appropriate to play in the background during certain adventures. I never saw that in D&D before! An excellent campaign for players of this game. Better for experienced players but even new players can get through it with a little help from the Keeper.Reviewed by Tim Janson

This is an excellent and very complete resource for developers and admins who already know the basics and have some experience with databases, and want a very detailed and complete reference book with lots of great tips and insights on MySQL. I'm a front end developer with *some* MySQL/database experience, so I was basically able to keep up with the *dense* technical-documentation-like content in this book, and I learned a ton about the features and capabilities of MySQL. However, this was NOT a great starter book for a beginner like me as it's essentially a detailed feature-oriented book with lots of theoretical examples, but almost no explanation of database design, and limited examples of how to use MySQL in a real-world application. This will be a fantastic long term MySQL reference on my bookshelf, but right now I've already ordered 2 more beginner-level books to help me apply all the features I now learned about from this book towards actually designing databases for my own applications.

Though not currently a developer, I wrote a lot of C a 25 years ago. This book was a nice middle-ground between a basic tutorial and a reference manual. The explanation is a bit verbose, but consequently easy to read through. The organization is a bit bizarre: one subsection goes into deep detail on alternative engines, with historical underpinnings and applications where one's queries are more efficient than the next; the next subsection goes into utterly elementary syntax for basic expressions. It goes back and forth without concern for the order in which information should be presented to make it relevant. There's a reason some stuff goes in the back of the book.A more unfortunate difficulty applies to the Kindle edition: the code examples don't lay our correctly, often rearranging symbols. I could usually figure it out , but this is a critical flaw for a book on programming syntax, where accurate character-by character presentation is the heart of the subject. Would be 2-stars if Amazon allowed rating of the specific version, rather than 4 for the book as a whole.

You can also find all the example code there.If you have little or no experience setting up and using mysql I would recommend buying the book anyways. Get the paper version. I bought the Kindle version and the indexing (kindle navigation) isn't fine grained enough to navigate quickly, since you will often need to do so when treating this as a reference book. The characters in the code examples also appear disordered, for example you will see "p-" instead of "-p". If you have command line and programming experience, you can easily figure it out, if not you're screwed.

I'm glad to say that this book was very thorough and touched on a lot of subjects from basic language data structures to more complex topics such as file manipulation, email, and MySql database connectivity. I also feel confident that I could modify existing code to meet my needs.A few notes.First, you CAN download the CD content. Just go to [...], set up a free account, register your book, and download the content.Second, there are mistakes sprinkled throughout the text that have not been corrected in the errata. You will need to do some basic troubleshooting to get some of the scripts to work, but it's nothing drastic.Finally, this book is written for PHP 5.2. If you have 5.3, there is one specific function the author uses that is deprecated. When you get to this section, it will be quite obvious, because you will get an error to that effect. It took an additional fifteen minutes of research for me to find and implement the updated function.My only complaint is that, after the "PHP Crash Course" at the beginning, there are fewer coding examples throughout the book. I would rather type up many smaller scripts and test out each concept throughout the chapter rather than one or two longer scripts at the end.I'm only 2/3 of the way through the book, but I believe this was a worthwhile purchase, and I will definitely look for titles by this author again.

I bought this as a gift for a friends sister who as Lupus. She was in the hospital for quite sometime and lost a lot of motor function and needed to rebuild that strength after discharge. She The Last Airbender and is quite artistic so with some Prismacolor color pencils, this fit the bill perfectly! She's well on her way to recovery.

Thick pages are good for coloring. Gave as an adult gift and she loves it. Almost kept it for myself tbh. Pictures are *slightly* different from the animation style, and not allnof them are scenes from the show which I liked.

I got this coloring book not too long after I finished watching the show for the first time and it is a dream. I know it’s a different artist but I like it, even if you try to copy the colors and everything from the show exactly there’s opportunities to be a bit creative. Plus not all the scenes are directly from the show, but they all correspond to an episode and a quote is on each page. It’s not overbusy while still maintaining key features to make it more enjoyable and the backgrounds aren’t daunting to color. This is a top notch coloring book alone but even better for a fan of the show.

This book is amazing! I just got it and I can't wait to color in it, I may even order another one. I love how each picture has the quotes with which episode they occurred as well. The book is very sturdy and legit. Couldn't be happier... well, not enough Azula, but that's just me.

Adorable pictures and recognizable scenes, plus a few extras. I actually like that it was done by a different artist than the show - it adds even more character to the drawings and puts a different spin on some of the scenes. The print has high definition and the book is great quality overall.

This coloring book does a great job including all the main characters from the show. It also incorporates many of the unique animals featured in Avatar the last Airbender. Some may complain the art work differs from that of TV show, but I find it more artistic and the artist captured the scenes and personalities of the characters to a tee.

This is a excellent coloring book. Bought one for myself and my daughter. Some of the pictures didn't quite match up with the series, but still very good.

Amazing! The illustration style is beautiful!

The research design is carefully conceived and superbly executed, and the writing is clear and convincing. This book should be on the reading list for any graduate course in qualitative research design or research design in general.One of the strengths of Thachil’s book is its mixed-methods design, which integrates macro data with in-depth field work and surveys conducted on-site in rural villages. This multi-level approach allows him to test hypotheses at a variety of levels to triangulate support for his theory. Because his theory argues that social services buy votes not as quid pro quo but instead by creating its party cadres as valuable, respected members of the community – opinion leaders, if you will, exercising soft power instead of hard – an important part of the evidence had to come from party cadres themselves as well as from the poor rural voters. The theory has implications at the level of Indian states, which are the primary alternative providers of social services, at the level of party and party activist behavior, and at the level of voters, and Thachil’s careful, precise design captures all three.Not being an expert on India, I can’t say whether there possibly were better locations to have chosen, but the justifications (and data) given in the book for the choices and comparisons were sufficiently convincing for this reader. The mix of descriptive and inferential statistics used created appropriate but still accessible support for the claims, and the claims made were reasonable interpretations of the available evidence. Appropriate attention was paid to interpreting non-events and the absence of evidence. I was thoroughly convinced after reading this book, and that’s not a claim I make lightly or frequently.
