About the Author

Cathie Robertson received her B.S. and M.S. degrees from San Diego State University and did much of her undergraduate work at California Polytechnic State University at San Luis Obispo. She is a professor of Child Development and Family Studies at Grossmont College near San Diego, California. She has taught child development, family studies, and food and nutrition courses, specializing in childhood nutrition, for more than 25 years and is now semiretired and teaches online. She is the former president of the International Nanny Association and serves on several committees for issues that involve early childhood education and nutrition. Ms. Robertson has made numerous national, state, and local professional presentations, including a number of presentations at NAEYC conferences. She has been the recipient of a number of grants, including one for a curriculum and resource guide for working with prenatally substance-exposed children and their families and another to create an intergenerational program where senior volunteers were trained to work with preschool children. She volunteers regularly in early elementary classes to keep current and is involved in a school garden project that helps children learn about nutrition education.

I'm currently using this book in one of my early childhood education classes and never before have I had a textbook so difficult to read. My classmates as well as my teacher happen to agree with my sentiments.It's excessively long, we've already found some spelling errors, many passages of the text could have been better worded as well as shortened, the text practically repeats what was just said two sentences previously- just reworded, and also it's really really boring.Apparently the 5th edition is way better than this one so I highly recommend everyone to obtain that one instead.

I hate reading on a screen and would take a paper book if it weren't so expensive. Originally, I paid $200 for this text at the local store. I returned it and rented this as an eBook for the semester through mid February (about $45). I can extend the rental for about 5 cents a day. My eyes get red reading on a screen but it helps to turn down the brightness on my computer. I downloaded the free Kindle for PC app in order to buy this as an eBook so I didn't have to buy a Kindle or other before making sure I would be ok to use an electronic book. With the money I saved I might consider a basic Kindle in the future since I hate the computer glare. Many people in other reviews complained that you can't highlight in the free PC version but I just figured it out and I am far from tech savvy. It is not an option on the toolbar. You just have to highlight the text with your cursor. Then a window pops up below the highlighted text with options. You then click on the "highlight" option and the highlighted text goes from grey to light yellow and stays that way when you click off of it. You can copy paste the text onto a word document and is automatically accompanied by the proper citation from the publisher. I believe it even includes the page number. The options that pop up when you highlight text are: Highlight; Add Note; Copy; More (Book extras by Shelfari; Dictionary; Google; Report Content Error; Search this book; Wikipedia). Below those options is a gear icon for other settings. There you have the option of choosing the language of your dictionary (several to choose from). I have only tried the highlight option.

Rented this book for my Early Childhood class. Made it difficult not to make marks or take notes in it but since the previous person did some note taking it made it a little easier. Just used alot of sticky notes. Was a heck of alot cheaper to rent this than to buy it!

In this wonderful book, Andrew Olendzki skillfully unpacks the complex teachings of early Buddhism and presents us with the psychologically transformative program the Buddha laid out for us for the relief of human suffering. And he does so in language that is clear, and deceptively concise. Within the pages of this slender volume one finds the foundational tenets of Buddhist psychology. In nine short chapters, Olendzki takes us on a tour of much of the Buddhist enterprise, thus placing into context many terms and practices that have caused much confusion for those who entered this field through the portal of the modern mindfulness movement. Olendski’s gift to us is in how he presents these concepts in a manner wholly relevant to our modern times, and surprisingly consistent with modern western psychological theory. The notion of an autonomous self is a powerfully felt fiction, we learn, the product of a mind that grasps at certainty and solidity, and refuses to glean the naturally occurring working of impermanence. The sense of self as substantive and unchanging is a “largely unexamined psychological reflex.” How the construction and perception of the self as immutable is the source of great self-inflicted suffering is laid out with a coherence I have not found elsewhere. I highly recommend this book for those seeking to delve deeper into the understanding of Buddhist practices and concepts.

This short book is packed with insights. Would definitely recommend it to friends who are new to, but curious about, the Dhamma and what the Buddha was talking about. Eminently quotable and quick to get to its points, it's an enjoyable read. Especially the final chapter on The Promise of Nonself, which hits every nail on its head. It's also enjoyable to read a work by a scholar who meditates and gets what is going on practice-wise. Give it a try!

This book makes the defining principle of Buddhism, that of nonself, more comprehensible than several others I have read. I would recommend it to anyone truly interested in the subject.

My first grader and I LOVED this book - and it's hard to find one that we both equally enjoy. I admit, at first I was just like, Neil Patrick Harris wrote a kid's book? Let's see what that's about! But I quickly forgot all about him and fell into the story.This book begins with a boy who seems to be an orphan and is being "raised" (mistreated) by his crooked uncle. Both are magicians, but his uncle uses his tricks to swindle people. Finally, the boy has enough and breaks out on his own. Without giving too much away, he meets up with some other kids like himself and they form a gang out to stop the baddies!This story is whimsical. It's hard to tell the setting... some of it makes it seem early 1900's, but other stuff makes it seem more current. The characters are strong and vivid, odd and interesting. One thing I really liked is the diversity. You have same sex parents, one of the kid's has a disability, different economic levels. NOT ONCE did my kid point any of this out, and I loved that. It's not unusual to a kid who is absorbing everything for the first time.This book is SMART. Lots of advanced vocabulary, but it's either easy to discern the meaning from deliberately clear context or it's explained in such a respectful, humorous way. SO many of these books can be really condescending to kids. And this book is FUNNY. I was dying to read more as much as my son!As far as reading level, I read this to my seven-year-old. He wouldn't have understand a lot of the humor without the tone of hearing it aloud and it gave us opportunity to explain some sayings and words. He's a pretty advanced reader, probably on the third grade level. I would say not younger than six to be read to... it might be too confusing.I'm already planning to purchase this for Christmas for a few kids in our lives. And I will DEFINITELY be buying more of these if it becomes a full series. A delightful book!

I facilitated a book club for five 11 and 12 year old girls. They all rated the book positively. The book meanders through 21 chapters with cute titles such as Chapter SIXTEEN BILLION—gotcha, a non-existent chapter! As the title suggests, magic features throughout the book, including lessons on how to perform magic tricks. I found the book to be written in a clever way to introduce youth into many words having a similar meaning: weasel, con artist, scam, nick something, racket, and shell game, to provide some examples. I enjoyed the book since there are many opportunities to have meaningful discussions with a small group of avid readers. There is a very strong message that good always outweighs evil.

I love Neil Patrick Harris. There is something very magnetic about this guy. I don’t always agree with him, but honestly... who agrees with anyone all the time! Lol!I bought this book to pre-read for my daughters.IT! WAS! AMAZING!A wonderful read! You could hear NPH read it along with you... it drips with his articulation and rhythm. It’s laced with magical tidbits and tricks!I’m looking forward to reading to my LittleLadies and maybe getting copies for my siblings families!(I also loved that it pushing friendships not romantic relationships which is always a plus in my opinion)(Side note for diversity, one kid is in a wheel chair, one tuxedo clad boy, homeless kid, and a girl adopted by two dads)

The magical misfits is a truly wonderful and amazing bookI would read again and rate it 4 and 2/10 stars(The above is a review by my extremely well-read, book-obsessed 11 year old. I also read the book and we both enjoyed it. My only wish is that it was a bit longer, but I understand that a longer book can be daunting for some newer readers. It was an easy read with an interesting plot but what I enjoyed most was the inclusion of diversity. I also enjoyed the characters, how they bound together based on the idea that they are “misfits”, and I believe I’m not alone in finding that highly relatable ;) Well done, Mr. Harris!)

I was curious as to how these powerful tools apply in a clinical setting and how they can impact research to improve individual patient treatment methods and outcomes. The book goes over how tools such as Hadoop and GPU chips are used, outlines concepts such as neural networks, and highlights the use of software delivery methods such as Agile are used to implement big data solutions. The case studies were especially interesting as they highlighted across payer and provider.

As an engineer in machine learning, this book seems to me that it addresses in a spectacular way all the dimensions to take into account in the construction of analytical solutions in health, there are many things that I have thought intuitively, but this book has allowed me to confirm some Of my hypothesis, I am very happy to have been able to read it, it has been very useful in my work and in my passion to improve in the area of health, a great congratulation to all those who made possible its creation and publication.

These case studies provide useful perspectives on the current state of big data,machine learning and AI - and what the near future holds for healthcare professionals and policy makers. There are eight case studies in this book which represents not only what's reality today but also what's coming. I strongly recommend this book to those who involved or plan to be part of Healthcare Analytics projects.

I currently work on the technical side of the Big Data space and did some research work in the clinical setting and could not put this book down once I started reading it! My favorite part is the real-life case studies that the authors go through. The authors sum things up pretty well that the key to any successful big data analytics project is having a strongly defined business use-case that can show some tangible ROI. And the use-cases that he goes through show exactly that. You won't find details about big data projects in the healthcare space like the ones in this book. The NRF Framework provides a great set of points for any data scientist or business user to think about before beginning a big data project. I'm definitely going to be using it with my internal and external customers. And don't fret if you aren't super well-versed in machine learning terminology. The author does a phenomenal job at providing the readers with a way of thinking about what kind of models are applied in different use-cases and what the tradeoffs of using those models are! Whether you are new to the healthcare analytics space or have been in the field for a while, you'll find your money's worth!

A great exposition on machine learning, big data, and analytics for novices & experts alike. Essential (and easy) reading for anyone involved in IoT, fast/big data, NLP, and AI. The authors' writing is crisp & clear and the book is filled with nice examples & case studies. Strongly recommended. A pricey purchase but more than worth it.
