But this collection of stories and tales belies hagiography.Wiesel takes these figures, brings them to life, and maintains their human complexity. Hasidic rebbes were public figures. They had followers and students. This came with a great cost. The need for solitude and connection to G-d was strong, and often stymied because of their functions as rebbes.Wiesel observes that nearly every master died in some state of despair. Often, it is not clear why, but Wiesel seems to be telling us that these men, who gave so much to their people, lost things in life through their service; this brought some measure of despair at the end.

I love this entire series...Rick Riordan wrote a great trilogy bringing Ancient Egypt into modern times. As a parent, what I like the best about this series is that my kids learned Egyptian history and mythology without realizing it...sort of like slipping a vitamin into mashed potatoes. The kids ate it up and learned something at the same time. I took my kids to the Field Museum in Chicago shortly after my oldest read this series, and I was amazed at how much she knew...she saw statues and could immediately identify them and tell the basic story about them just because of this series.

It's a continuation of the Red Pyramid Series. It's good for ages 10-15, boys and girls. The easy, language is not too challenging except for the foreign names. It provides background for Egyptian mythology and doesn't confuse other civilization's mythology into the book. It continues Riordan's good but not overbearing humor. It's not a comedy book. The main female protagonist is strong, snarky and loyal. There is a brainy, hopeful male character who balances her. The plot is different from the first two books, nor was it a logical step from the rest of the series. The first half tried to pull together plot points that the previous books had left unfinished, without the strong narrative that the first two did so well. The second half of the book seemed less polished, in that some places they visited were too unexplained, but then others were delved into too deeply. The ending was overly dramatic and didn't need to be. Like some of his other books, he ends up losing sight of the main goal, because he brings in too many unresolved plot threads from the previous books. It would be good for a gift if the whole series accompanied it.

Apophis is rising and chaos is about to destroy the world. And only Carter and Sadie Kane can stop him. But the only ones left to stand with them are the young magicians of Brooklyn House as their allies are being attacked, the House of Life is divided and on the brink of the civil war, and the gods themselves stand apart. To put an end to Apophis they need to find a spell that has been lost for a millennia and the only one that can lead them to it is the ghost of a deadly magician. Can Carter and Sadie do the impossible one last time? Or will the world fall into chaos?In this third and final book in the Kane trilogy, Riordan once again weaves his magic to create an epic battle and a memorable story. Riordan weaves a tale that will keep the reader on the edge of the seat through the twists and turns that are created, wondering and hoping that all of our heroes survive to do battle one more time. There's plenty of humor, some romance, the return of old friends, and lots of fun twists in this tale. And possibly a hint or two of future adventures to come. It's an epic read and I highly recommend it.

The Serpent’s Shadow brings the Kane Chronicles to an end as the third (and “probably”) final recording of Sadie and Carter. Just like the previous two novels, this one has a great hook:“Sadie Kane here.If you’re listening to this, congratulations! You survived Doomsday.I’d like to apologize straightaway for any inconvenience the end of the world may have caused you. The earthquakes, rebellions, riots, tornadoes, floods, tsunamis, and of course the giant snake who swallowed the sun — I’m afraid most of that was our fault.”So there you have it: Apophis swallowed the sun! That’s one burning question down, and a whole lot of others to go — like, how did they survive Doomsday if the snake got away with his plan? Well, I guess that’s when you need to read and find out.However, I did have some other very serious questions at the end of The Throne of Fire:Are they making the right decision? Despite Ra being a crazy old guy who played with cookies, he was rather needed.Is this a trap? Everything’s a trap! You need to go with it anyway.Why would anyone try to ride a double-headed snake? Clearly this earned Carter some serious street cred. It was totally necessary.What’s with the zebras and the weasels? Well, Zebras are clearly awesome and Ra’s very favorite… and Weasels are sick… though not beyond salvation.Who’d make a better boyfriend, Walt or Anubis? The answer is… YES.So many things go wrong as Doomsday approaches — go figure. Sadie and Carter, along with Walter and Zia, the Brooklyn House, and any stragglers… er, supporters, of the First Nome, must fight the greatest threat to human kind. What could possibly go wrong? … Well, they survive to tell the tale, so clearly a few things go right.The Serpent’s Shadow is driven not only by the impending deadline of the end of the world — as Sadie and Carter search for a way to defeat Apophis and vanquish him– but also by the characters’ interactions, hilarious events (just imagine a kindergartener running around with crayons, screaming “Die! Die! Die!”), and senile senior gods who just want to partake in the fun of fighting the forces of chaos. I happened to hear an interview with one of the authors on Vermont Public Radio and immediately ordered the book. Right from the get go where the authors talked about how New England was New York Giants territory pre AFL I knew this was going to be good because I can remember watching the Giants as a kid.To anyone who can remember sitting in Nickerson Field or Fenway Park or on the metal benches in Schaefer Stadium freezing you butt off watching or following the trials and tribulations of the "Patsies", you will enjoy reliving the history, as painful as it was to be a fan at the time. For anyone under the age of 25 who has only known the Patriots as the dynasty they have been since 2001, this will be a great history lesson for you and help you to understand the pain and suffering afflicted on long time fans by this team which has made the past 18 years so special.Lot's of great stories, anecdotes, memorabilia and insights put together in chronological order. Not a piece of literature but a concise, well written and assembled history of the franchise which any Pat's fan should enjoy and help you savor what has been so special about the 21st century Patriots. For the haters out there, sorry but it sucks to be you! I only hope that the revised edition of 2028 will show how the Pats dynasty continued...While I am a Kindle aficionado, I strongly suggest buying the hard cover version of this book.

Bought the book for my husband for Christmas. He has been a Patriots fanall of his life. HE LOVES IT! It is different from everything he owns, and believeme, he owns A LOT of memorabilia!

AS a long time fan--at the first game in 1960, is the most comprehensive and thorough book, I have read about the Patriots. The authors are very well informed and share stories that have happened over decades. This should be a must read for all Patrios fans.

About the Author

Maeve Binchy was born in County Dublin and educated at the Holy Child convent in Killiney and at University College, Dublin. After a spell as a teacher she joined the Irish Times. Her first novel, Light a Penny Candle, was published in 1982. She went on to write many bestsellers, including Minding Frankie, Heart and Soul, Whitethorn Woods, Circle of Friends and Tara Road, which was an Oprah's Book Club selection. She also wrote for Gourmet; O, The Oprah Magazine; Modern Maturity; and Good Housekeeping, among other publications. Maeve Binchy received a Lifetime Achievement Award at the British Book Awards in 1999 and the Irish PEN/A.T. Cross award in 2007. In 2010 she was presented with the Bob Hughes Lifetime Achievement Award at the Bord Gáis Irish Book Awards by the then President of Ireland, Mary McAleese. She was married to the writer and broadcaster Gordon Snell for 35 years and died in 2012, shortly after finishing this book.

After reading other's reviews of this book, I looked forward to this book. Unfortunately, this book seemed very bland to me, though interesting enough for me to finish it. The story takes place primarily in Ireland. It begins by telling the reader about "Chicky", an interesting young woman who is surprised to find that she is pregnant. The story follows her adventures for awhile; time passes and we learn about her son, family and a few friends. Then, after the first few chapters, a number of chapters each focus on a different, character, each interesting enough. Most of them do not know each other. This book includes quite a cast - from ordinary people to soldiers during the war as well as Counts and Countesses. Periodically I felt more engaged with a particular person's story.Eventually everything comes together to create the storyline. However, too many people are in this cast for my taste because it takes away from our really getting to know anyone well. For me, this book can't hold a candle to books by Anne Tyler - who writes so vividly that I really know and care about and become involved with each main character.

I absolutely loved this story. It soothed my soul. Each character seemed alive to me, and the interweaving of stories was so gratifying. I had the sense, as each person's "story" unfolded, that I was watching a magic act. It reminded me of the frequent fleeting feeling I get that random occurrences in my life are not "random" at all....that things happen for a reason. If that sounds maudlin or bizarre to you, this book might not be a good choice for you. However, if you were nodding in understanding while reading that bit, you are going to LOVE this story! Knowing me, this will become one of my frequently reread favorites. I've loved Ms. Benchy's work for many years, and this book reminded me why.

This book is made for a cup of tea and a cozy blanket in front of a fire. But if you prefer spicy chai tea to camomile, this may not be the book for you. I have not read a Maeve Binchy book in years, but this is a solid example of her style. If you like her other books, you will not be disappointed. I like my books with more meat and unresolved conflicts.This book takes place on the western coast of Ireland. Young Chicky Ryan meets an American boy and is swept off her feet. Despite family protest, she moves with him to New York City. But Walter Starr is lazy and he dumps Chicky after a few months. Unfortunately, she lied to her family and said they were married. She lies again and tells them he was killed in a car accident. Widow Chicky Starr eventually returns to Ireland. With the blessing of an elderly spinster in town, Chicky converts the woman's house into a B & B. There are worrisome moments, but the place is a success.The first chapter tells Chicky's story. The next two chapters focus on her niece and the son of a friend who help her open and run the inn. The subsequent chapters are devoted to each of the guests who come for the opening week. You learn their backstory, the life crisis that brings them to Ireland for a winter vacation, the insight they gain while there, and how their life is improved. Somehow each person gets what he or she needs during their stay at Stone House. Okay, one bitter guest remains unchanged.This was a book club pick. Though not my favorite book, it is a nice choice for the hectic time between Thanksgiving and Christmas. It is easy to read, it goes fast, the language is basic, and it mostly held my interest. The basic language and effortless read are also on my negative list. Beyond some mild quirkiness, there is a lack of character development. There is also a lack of plot development with a thin thread that ties some of the characters together. At times I was not sure if this was a novel or a short story collection. The stories are predictable and all the outcomes are happy. There is not much to ponder here and I will not remember this book beyond the book club discussion. Again, if you like Maeve Binchy's other books, you will be well pleased with this.

This was a bittersweet read...sweet because it is by Maeve Binchy, but bitter because it is the last book she wrote before dying in July 2012. Although it is billed as a novel, each chapter is more like a short story; however, all the stories are interconnected with each one building on the others.Set in the fictional village of Stoneybridge located on the west coast of Ireland--where the winds and the waves of the Atlantic create a harsh environment--the various stories are focused around an old house that is renovated as an inn. It opens in the middle of winter (not the most weather-friendly time to visit Stoneybridge), and we learn the secrets, fears, longings and desires of the guests who visit for a week in winter.Finishing the book is much like piecing together a jigsaw puzzle. And this is classic Maeve Binchy! The stories, the characters, the setting, the descriptions...no one writes like she did.

I'm an avid skeeball fan and have a special place in my heart for miniatures. I really wanted to love this and patiently waited 6 months for its release. While it is cute and looks great on my desktop it could have bee made a little better. It needs a ball return which could have been easily built into the mold and the stickers, while fun to apply should have been painted on. It's not really worth $10.

A fun toy. Everyone at work enjoys this little game. Sometime we place it in a low cut box so the balls don't fly off on the ground :)

A great addition for someone who keeps coming back to play. Though it is really kind of small and putting stickers on the rings can be quite difficult. Plus these 1/4" diameter ball bearings can get easily lost if you're not careful and may end up in children's mouths, hence the warning label on the box. The little book does tell the history of the game and how you play it.I bought it because I haven't played the game in a long time!

I purchased this product as a stocking stuffer for my 7 year old, because he loves to play skee-ball! It definitely is small, and a little hard at first to get the hang of. But for the price and just for a little extra bit of fun for any skee-ball fan, it still brings a smile to your face! It something he can take anywhere, (just as long as it’s not too hard to find the tiny metal balls!) and it keeps him entertained!

My Sister is stuck behind a desk all day and seemed to enjoy this cute lil Skee-Ball set. Not sure it was worth the near $7 I paid, but I’d buy again if needed at $5 or less.

This might have been cute and worth the money had it actually arrived with all of the pieces intact. The ball bearings/balls weren’t included in the package.

I was excited to get this when I ordered it. When it came, I opened it and started playing with it. About five minutes later, I had lost one of the tiny marbles/skeeballs. I also don’t know how you could roll something smaller than your fingernail, as it said in the instructions to roll the ball. I tried flicking it, and that’s how I lost one of them. Disappointed.

Grace is one of my favorite Carolyn Brown heroines. She isn't beautiful, graceful, or endowed with all the little womanly ways that men looked for in the late 1800s. Instead she is stubborn, opinionated, and a bit of a tomboy. She is also not in a hurry to get married, even though at 20 years old she is looking spinsterhood in the eye. When the new doctor comes to town, Grace causes an accident that makes them dislike each other immensely. It takes a kidnapping by a gang of train robbers (love those outlaws!) to make them see each other in a new light. I loved this book and already know that I will be re-reading it some time in the future.For those interested: There are no sexual situations or any language problems to offend any readers.

In trying to rescue a kitten Grace falls from a tree and knocks Dr.Gaitlin O'Mally from his horse. In the fall Grace breaks her leg. When she goes into the office for a follow-up visit both Grace and Gaitlin are kidnapped by a band of outlaws. These outlaws have a code of honor that they will not harm a married lady and they need the Dr's help for one of their men. The kidnappers take Grace and Gaitlin to a cabin many miles from where they live and leave them there. Due to the weather they are stranded and must learn to get along. They finally are able to leave and make the trek back to their homes. Its a fun read. Due to the strict morals of the day some of the events they endure while kidnapped do not rest easy with Grace. Their situations add to the fun of the story.

This is the last book of the series,actually sorry to see it end.All books were nicely brought to a conclusion with Just Grace.The new Doctor in town has the unexpected pleasure of meeting Grace when she falls out of a tree knocking him off his horse into a pile of manure.She is not the angel that fell from heaven,more like got kicked out.The story has many twist and turns,by them first getting kidnapped,then having to survive three weeks in the snowy mountains,trip back down,hotels with real running water,indoor plumbing,extravagant sleeping car.It was the best experience of Graces life.It takes a lot for them to wake up and realize they were meant for each other.The age difference is only a number when the heart wants what the heart wants.

I have widely varied interest in types of reading matter, but can count on the gentility of Ms Brown's novels, when in the mood for something kind and positive. They are well written and uplifting - a pleasant contrast to the harsh reality of many books. Maggie's Mistake (#2) and Emma's Folly (#3) are related novels. I read these three out of order, not realizing they were related. They preferably should be read in order, though each was fine, individually. I enjoyed all three.

This is the fourth book in the series and is about four friend two of whom are sisters. This book is about the younger sister.. It takes place in the Texas Oklahoma Indian Territory. This book is a light-hearted story and is a fun read. I am sure if you read this series you will enjoy them as much as I did. I enjoy Carolyn Brown's books because they are fun reading and you hate to see them come to an end.

I am a big fan of Carolyn Brown, I have read several of her books and enjoyed them very much. I'm glad I didn't read this one first or I may have not read any of her others. It was rather far fetched, not something that you would even think could happen. I just didn't care for it and feel it may have been one of her early writings. The humor wasn't there either. If your a fan, you may want to skip this one.

This is a cute story and a very fast read. I loved the characters and the quirky situations they were in. If your looking for a fun, enjoyable read this is your book. Carolyn Brown knows how to tell an enjoyable story no matter what century.

I found this book interesting. It was predictable, as most of these stories are, but the plot and characters kept me reading. Plot development was done in such a way as to make this a captivating story. I'd recommend this book to anyone who likes romance without being too mushy.
