I am generally a huge fan of the Eyewitness guides -- they are always my first pick when I am going somewhere new. I love the "Top 10" guides for when my visit to a city is short and I am able to pick just a few places to go and know I will also be provided with a handy pocket transit map. The translation of this one to a Kindle edition, though, was disastrous -- Eyewitness guides are nothing without maps and pictures but, when the Kindle-ized this one, they must have lost the majority of the images and all useful maps. There were some, mostly thumbnail, pictures, but they were in a resolution that did not allow them to enlarge nicely. The map of the top 10 sites, could only be seen without seeing the corresponding list of the 10 sites. Same for the map of the top 10 restaurants, top 10 monuments and memorials, etc. Maps of major sites, such as the features of the Schonbrunn's gardens, can only be seen with no labels or accompanying text at all, translating them from maps into meaningless collections of rectangles of varying colors -- the same was sadly true of all the maps to key features of major sites. Can I get my money back?I would like to blame all of my complaints on the poor translation of the book into a Kindle edition, but I also think it's fair to say there's a shortage of good content. There should have been some more Top 10 lists included. I might have listed them in their entirety in this review. Top 10 Singapore and Top 10 San Diego and all the other Top 10 books all are so much more helpful.
Having only four days in Vienna, we wanted to pack in the most while keeping an eye on expenses. The "Top 10" guide greatly facilitated the efficient organization of our sightseeing, cultural, and dining experiences. Took the guide's advice and saved/saw the most by using the airport train and hop on/off two day tour bus pass. The included easy to read compact city center map complimented the guide. It's not necessary to purchase a separate city map.
We have been using DK Eyewitness Travel books for quite a while now. We use the regular size books and also the portable Top 10 books as well. I love reading the historical backgrounds that give you an idea about the country and people you will be visiting, the colorful pictures, maps, recommendations and practical information sections. I am so used to the practicality of the way the book is set up, I get lost when I look at other travel books. When we plan a trip, the first thing I do is look up the most current DK Eyewitness Travel book. Loved Vienna and this book did not fail us, again.
TL;DR: Many of the suggestions don't have map reference, which makes it hard to use/useless.This was my first and probably last Top 10 buy and the first book that I thought about returning. I always buy a traveling book before visiting a new city, not only for the duration of the trip, but it can be used as a simple log of places I have visited, afterwards. Short story, I won't be using this book in Vienna. And here is two samples for the lack of reference:Top 10 walks (p68): 4 of them refer to other pages. none of them have a map reference, only 2 gives some clue on how to get.Top 10 Hotels in *great location* (p143): 6 of them don't have a map reference.All in all, if you are not planning to use the map, it's a good book, but if you want a standalone book and map, it's not the book.
We just returned from Vienna where we spent 2 1/2 days. The Top 10 guide was perfect for our trip as it highlighted the most popular/best things to do. We hit over half of their recommended Top 10 list and had an absolutley wonderful visit (snow and all). If you are going to be visiting Vienna for more than 3 days, however, I'd recommend you get the "full" version of the Eyewitness Vienna guide. :)
I purchased these for my daughter and friends upon their request. They found these books to be extremely well done and helpful. They said the maps and additional info for the country made getting around and sightseeing a breeze. As a matter of fact, they enjoyed them so much that they will not allow me to post and resell them! They are going to keep them for perhaps a future trip! Money well spent!
Like the rest of the series, Vienna is also great. Enough detail for a weekend or week visit. True everything to see/do in Vienna isn't listed, but plenty is and it is a great starting reference for first-time or repeat visitors. We'll keep buying/using these Top 10 guides.
Some very good explanations and picturesvery brief, but a useful way to get an idea for planning your itinerary for your tripsbut not the best
