Noteworthy experiences while reading this book: Just wow I just finished this one and I am just so blown away! If you think you know this story you are so wrong and you won't believe where this ends!Check out author's other books? YESRecommend this book? YES!!!!!Notes and Opinions: When I started this book I knew I was going to love it. Cynthia Hand has been a fav author of mine since I read her Angel series (which I still need to finish, book two is a killer man! 😂 ) This one is about a girl who fails to listen to the ghosts and well she DIES! And she has to play Ghost of Christmas Past. This one I thought was going to be a clean cut story where this girl gets reformed and grows a heart and although some of what I thought did play out it didn't play out in the way I thought it was going to. This one had a great pace and some surprises that I just didn't see coming at all! I was happy where the story lead and the ending was mind-blowing and so satisfying! It goes to show you how even little things your life is connected to others around you even strangers on the street. And that the choices you make can have a bigger set of consequences than you could ever imagine.The characters in this one are ones that I could see popping up in another book. Since this is all about reforming people are in a sense mean and hateful. I could see a full series of them dealing with different people. I think it would be very interesting to see what else this author could do.If you are still looking for a book to read this holiday (yup its Christmas Eve, See what I did there!!). You guys! I just finished such a fun read! And I found a good deal on it, so you should totally consider getting this book. It’s The Afterlife of Holly Chase by Cynthia Hand. Putting a modern, romantic spin on Charles Dickens’ The Christmas Carol, it’s full of sweetness and humor and snarkiness. It doesn’t seem like something fun could come out of The Christmas Carol, so you’ll have to trust me on this one."What Is The Afterlife of Holly Chase About?From Goodreads:On Christmas Eve five years ago, Holly was visited by three ghosts who showed her how selfish and spoiled she’d become. Hand’s book is YA paranormal, like Supernaturally by Kiersten White and Beyond by Catina Haverlock and Angela Larkin, so if you liked either of those books, you’ll like this one. The romance is done well, but be warned that it might not turn out how you think it will, which is part of the charm of the story.

This was the cutest Christmas story! I wasn't sure how I'd feel about this book because the synopsis made it seem a bit cheesy but I had a really great reading experience. Especially since I listened to it on audiobook.The characters were hit or miss for me. Holly, who is an awful person at the beginning of the story but gradually evolves into a better person as the story goes on, has a great character arc. When the story skips in time after Holly's death I liked that she was still not a great person, but she had improved some from her pre-death personality. Because I knew I wasn't gong to be able to handle a whole book where the character was that unlikable. I was rooting for Holly, but I didn't love all of her decisions and she often frustrated me. I didn't like Stephanie, or really anyone on Project Lamp. Stephanie was supposed to be a 20 year old college student but she acted way too young. However, I am not sure if this is a writing thing or the narrator's voice for Stephanie. Holly points this out multiple times, so it was purposely, but it drove me a little nuts. Everyone else on Project Lamp were a bit boring for me. Maybe also a bit annoying. I really loved Boz, who was a strict but incredibly soft mentor who I would have loved to be in more scenes. I also would have loved to get to know both Dave and Blackpool more. I found the love interest, Ethan, to be okay but nothing super unique. I liked Holly's connection towards him because of how much she could relate her own past life to his.The plot had me the most interested. I am typically more of a fan of character drive plots, and though I didn't mind the characters overall, I was mostly motivated to keep reading because I needed to know what would happen next. I was hooked from the get go. I loved the unique idea and how the story in A Christmas Carol is used to make this really cool story idea come to life. I didn't even really mind the romance. It was cute and the dialogue between the two characters Holly and Ethan was witty and often time romantic.The writing was okay. It didn't blow me away but I fund it to be digestible and easy to fly though. I think it takes a lo to write a Christmas story and have it not dripping with cheese but I think Cynthia Hand did a good job at making it more heartwarming than cheesy. It had it's moments where I felt like it was cheesy but it's a Christmas story so that is to be expected.Overall, if you're looking for a fun Christmas story to read to hype yourself up for the holidays I highly recommend it. It was so much fun to read and I think anyone could enjoy it.

This is an amazing book. The author I have never read before, but he makes it easy for a non-specialist to comprehend the incredible work of St. Maximilian Kolbe regarding our Lady's title as revealed in the 1854 appearance, Immaculate Conception.Kolbe's insights into the title itself (Immaculate Conception) and all its implications are completely enlightening and give one a far deeper comprehension of Mary, her role, how the Trinity works functionally and our relation to this wonderful God and His Immaculate Conception He created for the primary purpose to bear God become man in her womb and thus become Theotokos, God bearer and Mother of God (the Greek term means both).This is essential reading, particularly for those who in some measure comprehend the basics of Church teaching on Mary, Mariology as it is called. I would hope all clergy would read this so they might draw from the wellsprings of Kolbe's enlightened teaching and share that with all people, especially their congregants.

This book has changed my life and understanding of the "Immaculate Conception" Our Blessed Mother of God. Every Catholic must and should have this on their shelves. I have this book marked everywhere! It is written by Fr. H.M. Manteau-Bonamy, OP, who is a theologian with great insight on St. Kolbe's writtings. It is always important to me that my books have an Imprimatur which this book does have! I will quote just some of the book to give an idea whats in store for you!..."In what does this life of the Spirit in Mary consist? He himself is uncreated Love in her; the love of the Father and of the Son, the Love by which God loves himself, the very love of the Most Holy Trinity. He is a fruitful Love, a 'Conception'. Among creatures made in God's image the union brought about by married love is the most intimate of all. In a much more precise, more interior, more essential manner, the Holy Spirit lives in the soul of the Immaculata, in the depths of her very being. He makes her fruitful, from the very first instant of her existence, all during her life, and for all eterinty."The union between the Immaculata and the Holy Spirit is so deep we can't completely understand it."For the Holy Spirit is her spirit."To make himself clear he states that the Holy Spirit is not incarnate in Mary. Only Jesus the Second Person of the Trinity became incarnate and took flesh. But he states that the Holy Spirit is so deeply present in Mary St. Kolbe says "The Holy Spirit is quasi (in some manner) incarnate, without being really and strictly incarnate; for Mary the Immaculata is, as such, taken up by the Holy Spirit in all her being, as a woman and as a mother.""Jesus Christ has two natures, divine and human, which are united in one single divine Person; such is theexact and precise formulation of the dogma. The Immaculata is united to the Holy Spirit so closely that we really cannot grasp this union. But we can at least say that the Holy Spirit and Mary are two persons who live in such intimate union that they have but one sole life."When seen in this light we can understand better the gifts the Father has sent us, Jesus his son, and Mary a living image an icon of the Spirit of Love in the Most Holy Trinity."God sends us the one who personifies his love: Mary, the spouse of the Spirit- a spirit of maternal love- immaculate, all beautiful, spotless, even though she is our sister, a true daughter of the human race. God confides to her the communication of his mercy to souls. He makes of her the Mediatrix of the graces merited for us by her divine Son, for she is full of grace, the mother of all souls born of grace, reborn, and always being reborn, becoming ever more God-like."Every Catholic must have this! I hope all will learn the role of Our Mother who cares for each of us!Hail Mary!

When you think of the Immaculate Conception, the average Catholic understands that Mary was conceived without sin in the womb of St. Ann. But that is just the tip of the majesty of what God prepared for Her of whom He spoke in Genesis 3:15, "I will put emnity between thee and the Woman..." To all those who cannot understand the vocation of the Mother of God, St. Maxamilian will open your eyes to the rest of the story, words written with a passionate, inspired wisdom on a subject as deep as it is hidden.

I purchased the three-part set of Math, English and Practice tests. So, this is a review of the set. Why a two-star review? Actually, it should be a two and a half star. Here's my rub with this set. This set covers both lower level and upper level material and, except for the practice tests and some other very limited areas, it's not clearly identified what material is lower level and what material is upper level.So, if your student is going to an independent middle school and then high school, this set may be fine, except your student may find themselves covering upper level math when they should be focusing on the lower level math. Or, if your student is taking the upper level exam, they might find themselves wasting time on lower level math or vocabulary. It would be better to have separate lower level and upper level versions of the book because, unless you have two students - one of which is testing for middle school and the other for high school - only half of the material is of use (and it isn't clearly labeled which material is for which exam).At least the tests are labeled which level they are. However, since I bought this for my daughter who is testing for an independent high school, the lower level material is of no use and could be harmful in that she could find herself led to believe that the math or vocabulary will be easier than it really will be.I think a much better approach would be to have separate books for the lower level versus upper level.

This book is okay. Sadly, it is one of the best prep books out there for the SSAT. That said, it doesn't have a lot of competition.The problem with this book is that it has lower, middle, and upper level SSATS (2 of each). As such, only 2 tests in the book are relevant to any student in particular.This book might be more useful as a resource for a tutor than for a student.

I own a tutoring center and we require all SSAT prep students (grades 5+) to buy the Ivy Global Math & English books. We've had very good results for 5 years. Yes, there are lower cost books but these are comprehensive, well organized and easily used. Our tutors also like the way students can engage with Ivy Global's online SSAT resources. It's a well coordinated approach to improve scores on a very challenging test.

The practice is decent but this book is horridly overpriced. You can find equally good quality review material online for free.

Great book and I recommend this to every SSAT test taker.

In my opinion, this book is overpriced.As an SSAT and ISEE tutor, I can confidently say that lack of materials is absolutely the biggest problem. There are only a few official practice tests directly from the test makers (unlike the SAT, which has at least a dozen tests released at any time).While the tests in this book are comparable, both in level and in content, to the actual SSAT, the book itself is too expensive. A company called Test Prep Works (with whom I have no affiliation) offers complete practice tests that are just as good for less than half the price, plus they have books with strategies and extra practice sets.Ivy Global's materials seem to do a good job, but they're just not worth the cost.

Willett Cunnington;- and this book.Carol Grafton's book is really more of an assemblage of pictures for illustrators than anything else, but what pictures! Over 900 B&W drawings lovingly display every little detail of the elaborate costumes of the Victorian and early Edwardian eras from the mid-1850's to 1903. This book doesn't have much in the way of text so it's not as comprehensive a research resource as some of the others that I've mentioned, but as an auxiliary resource to the other books on the above list, it's perfect.

The pictures are detailed and beautiful, but I do wish there were more examples of different kinds of clothing. Most of these seem very upper-class and dressy. I was hoping to see a variety of clothing, including simpler day to day attire for lower and middle classes as well.

A great collection of photos if you're interested in Victorian Fashions.

I would rank this book just behind Victorian Fashions and Costumes from Harper's Bazar, 1867-1898 (Dover Pictorial Archives) by Stella Blum and Full-Color Victorian Fashions : 1870-1893 by JoAnne Olian. If you have to be selected go with the first two before this one, but I still highly recommend this to round out the collection. More than 900 very detailed crisp drawing from the marvelous people at Dover Publishing again. They bring you inexpensive books that are a wealth of information, writers of period romance just cannot live without.

I purchased this book because it has images of both women and men's accessories separate from the full outfit so it gives the reader/researcher a clearer vision of the layers that make up the costume.

Glad to see this in print! I discovered a few of Magritte's writings years ago and learned that RiverRun Press published a collection but could never find a copy.This is a wonderful, thorough, beautifully printed edition.

My girlfriend really enjoyed reading this as he is her favorite artist!

Wonderful and insightful collection of writings that really take you into the mind of Magritte.

The paintings are better. He was a thoughtful guy, but the paintings of course attack thought itself, which he himself, perhaps failed to integrate at times. Never the less if one is interested in art history, surrealism, and his biography, quite interesting material.

Rated 4.5 of 5Like most people, I suspect, I am familiar with René Magritte from his remarkable, surrealist paintings, but have no clue as to his writing prowess. Until now.Not surprisingly, the brilliant and extremely creative mind that produced some rather iconic works of art is just as introspective and creative in his writing as well. But Magritte is not a writer in the sense of producing novels or even short stories in the traditional sense. But he does reflect on his work and the works of others and on the idea(s) of art in general. Some of the writings here are only a sentence or two long and some of the writings included are really not 'writings' at all but interviews that have been conducted with Magritte. A more apt title might be 'The Musing of René Magritte.'Magritte tends to be rather philosophical and sometimes a bit existential in his thoughts, which seems appropriate given his work and the era in which the artist was painting.It is interesting to get a little insight into the mind of the man who painted the iconic "Apple" paintings and the painting of the pipe with the words "This is not a pipe" included on the painting. It makes sense what he writes in 1967:

I believe Victor Hugo said, "We only ever see one side of things." Now it is precisely "the other side" that I try to express.*

And in an interview with Marcel Fryns in 1966 he says:

Pop art is rather the descendent of Dadism, but without Dada's freedom at that era. I notice that real avant-garde art has always been badly received, whereas fake avant-garde art is enormously successful. Pop art lacks the authenticity that would give it the power to be provocative.*

When asked, in a 1947 interview, what he is interested in, Magritte answers:

Creating. My only wish is to be enriched by exciting new ideas. For me, art consists in expressing charm and pleasure. Before the war my works reflected anxiety. Experience of conflict and a load of suffering has taught me that what matters above all is to celebrate joy for the eyes and the mind. ... I live in a very unpleasant world because of its routine ugliness.*

One brief passage struck me as particularly interesting and unexpected from an artist ... someone who earned his living with his paintings.

Anyway, it's not necessary to see a painting! There are heaps of reproductions, art books. For me, a reproduction is enough! Like in literature, you don't need to see a writer's manuscript to be interested in his book!*

But among all the little nuggets and gems of philosophy offered by Magritte in his writings (and there are plenty), I think his thoughts are best summed up with his 1955 article titled "A Poetic Art" which opens with the sentence: "The art of painting, as I see it, makes possible the realization of visible poetic images."*Looking for a good book? Magritte by Rene Magritte is a free NetGalley ebook published by my alma mater (yay) that I read in late August.Surrealist not only in his paintings, this is a compilation of Magritte's letters, interpretations, speeches praising other artists, film scripts, and evocative essays that are off and on speckled with ink sketches and dialogue bubbles in careful "une pipe" cursive. Massive, studied, and witty, this is indeed the written work of someone who playfully referred to himself as a kind of 'double agent.'

Like many others I was familiar with Magritte's Paintings but not his writings. I really enjoyed reading this varied collection of essays, poetry and interviews. Like his painting there is a lot of humor. The editor has done a good job of organizing and offering a good overview. Anyone interested in Magritte and the surrealist movement will enjoy this book.

I received a digital copy of this book from net galley in exchange for an honest review.I was looking forward to reading the selected writings of René Magritte, as I am very familiar with his artwork, but not as much with his writings. This was a great way to be introduced. There were a variety in the selection. From interviews he gave to contributions to written collections and even small wtitings a few sentences long. I'm glad I was able to read this!I would recommend it to people interested in Magritte (obviously), and anyone interested in artists and Surrealists in particular.

 As a life-long Sailor Moon fan, I remember the unfortunate drought in the 2000s when Sailor Moon DVDs, VHS, and manga were very difficult to come by in legal channels. It wasn't until 2011/2012 that Kodansha began to release the manga in the U.S. with new artwork. Basically, just having the product here in a way we can supporte Takeuchi-Sensei is amazing.With the release of the Eternal Editions (or Perfect Editions), I'm blown away at the level of care and beauty Sailor Moon is being treated with now. EE #2 features Sailor Mercury on the color with a beautiful holographic shift. The volume features Acts 8 (Minako: Sailor V) through 14 (An Ending and a Beginning: La Petite Étrangère) and has the most beautiful colored first page and act cover pages ever. I love how the cover looks as well - this is such beautiful art that many in the U.S. haven't been able to see until now.As you can see in the video, the EE is much larger than traditional volumes, but I think it really makes these stand out! I highly recommend that Sailor Moon fans purchase these - they make a wonderful addition to any collection!

if you're a sailor moon collector, like me, then you likely already own the previously released english editions of the manga. however, if i had to recommend an edition to purchase over another, i'd go with these. although we have only seen the release of the first few volumes in english so far, these eternal editions are larger, made with higher quality paper, and offer more content than their counterparts. definitely a major thumbs up from me.

This graphic novel is great. The cover on the book is glossy and the artwork on it is beautiful. The pages on the book are printed on premium paper. One thing I like abut this book that is is really big. This is a very good product.

Arrived on time! Can't wait for the entire volume set!

It took me a few chapters to get into this book but once I did, Wow! The story revolves around Dita, a young Jew, who is placed in the family blockof Auschwitz and takes on the position as librarian. Books are banned and the position is extremely risky. While reading The Librarian, the characters began to feel like family and I could literally feel their pain, hunger, fear and sorrow. The details provided about the conditions of Auschwitz is beyond imaginable. And to think that Dita has it much easier than the inmates in Auschwitz I. The number of innocent lives taken by the Nazi party is horrific, as well as the causes of the deaths. I found the takes of the doctor's experiments to be the absolute worse. I can not help but wonder what type of monster it takes to do the things he did especially to childre . This book leaves you sad and feeling empty but at the same time grateful that there has been nothing similar since. Great book. Highly recommend.

I just finished Night by Elie Wiesel so when I came across this book I thought it was going to be another powerful read. I really wanted to like the book but the story started off weird. Within chapter 1 there was a young girl name Dita running all over the place. She was out of control, climbing up on a stove and jumping off, knocking over stools and being an unruly young child (I perceived her being around 7-9). All the teachers were frightened and telling her to stop. They were terrified she was going to get them in trouble or worse. Then in chapter 2 it is explained that Dita was a 14 year old girl who was given the responsibility of protecting illegal library books in Auschwitz. The job was given to her by teachers/grownups. Then why was she behaving that way in chapter 1? Why would they give her the responsibility to care for something that could lead to death if she has undisciplined behavior? Why would the adults give that responsibility to a "child" in the first place if they truly understood their situation? Is this a second Dita or the same Dita just older? I reread chapter 1 because obviously I am missing something. I thought it was me. I don't know if this book is poorly written or just a bad translation. It was confusing so I decided not to go on after chapter 2. I may pick it up again in future but as of right now, I'll move on.

While the topic of the Holocaust can make for some pretty depressing and saddening reading, I'm always on the lookout for any "untold" stories. Untold to ME, that is. I'm sure others already knew about this lady, but I had no idea. As a real-life librarian, the premise of a "librarian" in Auschwitz intrigued me. It was a heartbreaking, but satisfying journey to read this story. The amount of courage this young girl had just astonishes me. I'm in awe of how she was able to stay strong and think of others in the midst of such horrendous atrocities. I highly recommend this book.

I have read many Holocaust books in my life, not really to learn anything new about WWII, but to learn new stories about those who lived through this event, and honor those who had the misfortune to be alive, living in those unbearable conditions.I hold books like the Nightingale, all the books by Roberta Kagan, Saving Sophie, Finding Rebecca, Rebecca’ s Key, The Invisible Bridge, and of course The Diary of Anne Frank, as well as The Librarian, close to my heart, just as Dita held her books close to her during her time in Concentration Camps. The author met Dita many years after the war, and wrote her story for us all to know, admire, and be amazed by her spirit, and bravery. He even goes on to tell what happened to each of the Natzi leaders in the epilogue. There is even a surprise connection with Anne Frank.Through this horror, many children are taught to read, learn about history, geography, the wonder of books by loving teachers, who try to keep things as normal as possible for the children.If I could, I would put this book, along with Anne Frank’s Diary, Into every child’s hands, as well as every adult’s. It really is a gift.

As a veteran reader of Holocaust literature, I found this book to be informative. That is, it's the first account that I've ever read from inside the "family camp" at Auschwitz. The author's description of the teenager charged with the security of the camp's 8 books is necessarily fictionalized to a great extent; many details and some dialogue could not have been contemporaneous facts. However, this is a small issue. Whereas I thought I had a fairly comprehensive understanding of this concentration camp (and others), I wasn't aware of the specific conditions that prevailed there, that the inmates established a school so that children could benefit from some sense of normalcy, and that parents and children actually lived together (within reach, or in nearby barracks) for extended periods. They certainly experienced awful conditions, which adds poignancy to the "librarian's" nightmarish personal history.

This book was a really good read. It brings hope to a dire situation. It will expand your love for books in a way like no other.

This was a great story based on a real person whom the author was able to meet at one point. When you think of these young teenagers in a setting like Auschwitz and how much older they really had to be, it’s a heartbreak on to of the already soul-crushing events of the Holocaust.The story sometimes moves a little slowly, but since it’s not entirely fiction, some of the small details were probably important to include.A quick read for adults and worth the read.

Recently I asked a friend how to recommend this book and how one could not recommend this book. I have read dozens of Holocaust books, but never one like this one. You are there in Aushwitz while thanking G-d you are not really there. The story is amazingly haunting, yet one everyone must read. Books are precious, as are libraries. This particular library and its librarian are stunning examples of what the Germans tried unsuccessfully to do.
