It doesn't take more than a few pages. Then someone who is mistaken for Ranger--one of the two men in and out of Stephanie's life (the other is Morelli the cop)--is accused of kidnapping his daughter. Evanovich uses all of her considerable arsenal here: wisecracking humor and set pieces about cars, neighborhoods, family matters, and the funeral parlor (now with new directors straight out of Queer Eye for the Burg Guy). Then, at one point, both Morelli and Ranger are living out of Stephanie's apartment (she flees to her childhood bedroom). Evanovich also deftly uses celebrity stalking and identity theft to sketch a quite scary bad guy, and she creates in Ranger's daughter, Julie, a spirited 10-year-old version of her mesmerizing father. The ending is downright terrifying, but the coda is soothing and features a cake with icing roses. Kids? Cupcakes? What could possibly be next? Stephanie seems to be getting better at the bounty hunter thing, but still has enough issues to make her takedowns humorous. She actually kicks in a couple doors. I do kind of wish she would learn how to pick locks though. All the usual folks are here also to add to the fun and a few new ones show up.Janet Evanovich uses this book to flesh out the Ranger character. He's not just a batman like personality that simply pops up when he's needed. I definitely enjoyed that part of the novel.Poor Stephanie has a problem now. She realizes that she actually loves both Joe and Ranger, she's not just in lust. Oh, to have such a dilemma.I still love the series. The books are cute, funny, and light. As long as the books keep coming, I'll keep reading.

I only just started reading the Plum novels, and not in order, but of the six or so I've finished, this is by far the best one. Instead of a cardboard horny gang member with an attitude, Ranger turns out to be a real - and really unusual - person. He's still got his hard-ass Special Forces persona, but we see way under it. We find out he gave his child up for adoption so she would have a better life than he could give her, that Julie resembles him in important ways, that even he can be overwhelmed by circumstances, and that he loves Stephanie (OK, so he says "emotionally involved"...but in the context of that paragraph, that's what he means). Yes, he keeps crawling into bed with her, but mostly because he needs someone to hold for comfort. I thought the whole book was genuinely suspenseful, which in turn made the slapstick interludes even funnier.And wow, is the slapstick funny! Some of the other books try too hard - there's too much, it's too silly, and the narrative doesn't hold together. This one, though, avoids those problems - the humor builds around Sally's band as the tension builds in the increasingly desperate search for the little girl. The dinner scene with Steph trying to get her Dad out of the house before the band starts rehearsing - particularly Grandma Mazur imitating Mick Jagger - is priceless. (I just love Grandma Mazur, and it was interesting to see her contrasted with Ranger's Cuban grandmother - presumably the one who raised him through high school).We get less character development with Joe, but still some: Morelli doesn't do his usual Maalox routine when Steph decides to meet Scrog - he's quietly supportive and asks her what she wants him to do. Stephanie's scenes with little Julie are very warm and sweet, despite the violence around them. I do wish Stephanie had been developed a little more, though - she does comfort Ranger in a couple spots, and finally tells Morelli she loves him, but given what Evanovich managed to do with Ranger's character, it could be better. The one problem with the book (in fact all of them) is that Stephanie never seems to learn anything - Evanovich develops male characters better than female ones. Can't be earnest or serious - that would kill the fun - but there ought to be something.I do disagree with the voices claiming that Steph should just make up her mind between Morelli and Ranger - it is entirely possible to love more than one person at a time, particularly when both of them have wonderful qualities mixed with serious drawbacks. Morelli is dependable, responsible, and family oriented, but he's usually trying to get Steph to be quieter and more civilized. She'd hate that. Ranger, on the other hand, notices and tries to help develop her talent, but he apparently has some awful secret in his past that makes him unable to promise her anything more than sex. It's a good setup for a lot more story, and I'll be disappointed if Evanovich eventually wraps this up with some trite, Hallmark card-style solution. A three-cornered outcome of some sort would be much more interesting, particularly since Ranger and Morelli have become, well, not close friends, but complementary.Anyway, still not Dorothy Sayers (if you're not familiar with her Lord Peter Wimsey crime novels, you're missing out), but hilarious, suspenseful, and worth a repeat reading.

Having read these first twelve books in order, this seems to be the funniest book so far. Stephanie has returned to work for Vinnie, but finds that Ranger needs her to help track down a man who is posing as Ranger and has kidnapped Ranger's daughter. The Fake Ranger wants to kill Ranger, make Stephanie his girlfriend, and live Ranger's life. Good story, funny book, very interesting.

Love these characters and the relationships they have to one another. Love each and every one of Janet's books and her characters feel like old friends. Laugh out loud funny. Do my reading at bedtime, but the problem is I end up reading longer than intended because the stories are so great. If this is your first time reading one of Janet Evanovich's books. this book will have you looking for the rest of them.

Stephanie is still Stephanie, and I think that's why I love her. Her personality is like an amalgam of several of my good friends, but her occupation takes her over the top, so reading her adventures is like living out a comfortable fantasy, except that the author has done all the work for me and all I have to do is sit back and enjoy.This episode of the fantasy is particularly interesting because it explores and reveals details about Ranger and his background, as well as showing a few cracks in his Superman persona that are actually welcome. It was good somehow to see him challenged and even temporarily defeated by the bad guy here. It made him seem more human and real, struggling to come up with an answer and experiencing frustration when his usual tactics fell through. Sympathy for Ranger....what a concept!The usual cast was as entertaining as ever, and an addition to the Bonds office staff seemed to fit right into the zoo. It also felt right to have a male around who is not a superior human being or totally freaky, but just a normal guy, except for being a pervert of course.So, if you haven't yet read any of Stephanie Plum's adventures, give this one a try. You'll laugh out loud and enjoy the journey. Then you'll be off to the library or back here to Amazon to pick up all of the first 11 books in the series, guaranteed.

A quick read that will be helpful to give middle school students a modicum of information regarding the terror and repression of the German citizens whose only "crime" was their homosexuality.

Very insightful read about the trials of Holocaust victims.

This book has taught me about another aspect of Nazi regime where homosexual Jews were the worst victims. Yet, it's hard to believe their rights were denied until recent, about 10 years ago. It was difficult for me to read survivors' stories as there aren't many survivors to share. I'm delighted to know they were honored 'n recognized. Easy to read and if ya enjoy reading different aspects, this is the one I recommend.

This was very eye opening for, when I used to think of the holocaust I would mainly think of what the Jewish had to go through. But this book got me to see other sides of the story and what it was the holocaust was like for other, including homosexuals. I think it is a good thing that this book was written to preserve the memory of those who died and those who survived in the holocaust. Some of the stories in here where so heartbreaking and I cried a couple of times, but it made me realize how lucky I am to grow up in a place where people are accepted for their differences.

This topic of this book was something I hadn't ever even heard of so that's why it was so interesting.

Branded by the Pink Triangle by Ken Setterington tells the story of the Nazi persecution of gay men. Setterington weaves survivors' stories in a chronological history wherein they told about, at first, the harassment they suffered at clubs and bars, to the eventual deportation to concentration camps where all gay men had to wear a pink fabric triangle sewn onto their striped uniform. Branded also deals with the atrocities committed against gay men and the horrific conditions they endured in the concentration camps. This book had been classified by Library and Archives Canada Cataloguing in Publication as juvenile literature. I cannot disagree more with such a classification. In fact, my own library system has six copies of this book, and they are in the adult collection.I raise a very weighty topic when I argue when is the appropriate time to tell children about the atrocities committed by the Nazis against Jews and gays. Without question, this history cannot be denied and must continue to be told. My reservation is that Setterington has ostensibly written a book for children yet the content within is so graphic I cannot imagine any child reading this on his own and not feeling wholly traumatized afterward. The cover, font size and plentiful illustrations all point to a junior format of a book. In fact, all five of Setterington's other books owned by the Mississauga Library System have been placed in the Children's Department, so I do not feel as if Branded was an exception, but rather that Setterington fully intended for children to read this. However I do wonder about the five pages of endnotes, and why they were in a work of juvenile nonfiction, and thus why Library and Archives Canada felt to classify it as such.The target audience for such a book is likely not children in general, but rather children of gay fathers. Setterington described Berlin nightlife before the National Socialists came to power, when it was an exciting place for gays to be out and socialize. I found the description of the goings-on at sex clubs to be entirely inappropriate for juvenile literature. Repeated references to acts of "indecency" committed with another man, or of men who allow themselves "to be misused indecently", do not belong in a book for children. The language, where Setterington used such slang terms as "queen" for an effeminate gay man, would be totally lost on a child reader under the age of ten. Just who was Setterington writing this book for? For the child of Perez Hilton? For the son of Brüno?After the liberation of the concentration camps it is a sad fact that the gay men who were incarcerated were not set free. Since they were sent to the camps for being homosexual, and homosexuality was still a crime in Germany after World War II, gay men had to continue serving their sentences and were transferred to other prisons. It took forty years before any public monument was erected to honour the gay victims of the camps. Before then:"The gay community was not even allowed to participate in the memorial services held at concentration camps or at war memorials. In 1970 gay activists in Amsterdam arrived at the National War Memorial in Dam Square with a lavender wreath to honor the gay men who had perished. The activists were arrested, and the wreath was removed and denounced as a disgrace."Setterington ended Branded with updates and photos of all the men he profiled. Sadly there are no more survivors who were branded by the pink triangle, as Rudolf Brazda died in August 2011. The bibliography provided a lengthy list of survivor memoirs which are essential reading for learning about gay history in Europe during World War II.

This is an excellent, well-researched, and very accessible book on a difficult subject - the persecution of gay men by the Nazis. Written in a very straightforward, factual manner, this is a book that could benefit anyone wanting to know more about events of this time. My only concern is that the book is marketed as a young adult title. It is completely appropriate, accessible, and informative for the adolescent and young adult reader. But there is no hint of oversimplification or telling the reader how to react to the material. Any adult wanting to know more about this chapter in history could benefit from reading this book.

It told of how gays lived before the warand then told more than one story. It mentioned different people's stories in various parts of Europe during the warand what happened to them after the war. Arlene Mosel (1921-1996)’s debut children’s book, Tikki Tikki Tembo, was an American Library Association Notable Book and won the Boston Globe-Horn Book Award. In 1997, The New York Times named it one of the best 50 children's books of the previous 50 years. Mosel also wrote The Funny Little Woman, an Honor Book for the Hans Christian Andersen International Children's Book Awards.Blair Lent (1930-2009) received the Caldecott Medal for The Funny Little Woman, and three Caldecott Honors. Great book. This is fun to read and has a nice lesson. As a reading specialist and English teacher, I wish the critics and book banners would go away. So what if it is not completely authentic. It's a fiction book not a history or cultural lesson. It makes me wonder what these people read to children because if everything has to be totally accurate, animals don't talk, and then there is Santa, the Tooth Fairy, Easter Bunny...get it?

In a nutshell: Tikki Tikki Tembo as retold by Arlene Mosel is a fabled Chinese fable about two little brothers. The oldest one is purportedly given a long impressive name meaning “The Most Wonderful Thing in the Whole Wide World” as he is to inherit his parents’ beloved possessions. His younger brother is considered some sort of back-up and is given a short name (Chang) which means “Little or Nothing” or Clueless Playmate or something. Wiki-the-source-of-all-truth-pedia, states that the book is controversial because it may be a Japanese story told about China and does not portray Chinese culture accurately. I plan to seek guidance from my Chinese family members on where this story lands on the offensiveness scale.So,the boys are monkeying around and Clueless Playmate falls into the well. Golden Boy runs to his mother and they get a ladder-wielding-tree-napping-old-man to save him named “Old Man With The Ladder.” He pumps the boy’s leg like a water pump to revive him which must be some sort of olden time CPR.Of course the little boys are monkeying around in the bathtub AGAIN, I mean near the well, despite the close brush with death and this time Golden Boy falls into the well. His brother runs for help and after repeating John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt four or five times, almost passes out from exhaustion, leaving his evil mother childless. Fortunately, Old Man With The Ladder comes to his senses and rescues Golden Boy with the same water pump CPR procedure.And the story concludes that this is why Chinese families name their kids little, short names.Families can talk about: How would you feel if your name meant Little or Nothing? Do you know what your name means? Why is the mom so mean and dismissive of the younger brother? Why don’t the little boys mind their mother? Do you mind your mother? How confident are you about that answer? What is your game plan if you fall into a well or deep water? What should you do? And if you see your brother fall in? Why do you think swimming lessons are important? Which is more fun to say: Tikki tikki tembo-no sa rembo-chari bari ruchi-pip peri pembo or John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt?

I remember this boom from childhood and loved it. The name of the little boy is oh so fun to say BUT as an adult the message of this book is horrifying. The mom is absent and neglectful of her younger son, the prized first son is left permenantly scared, and no one learns a lesson except to give the first favored son a short name...I’m sorry what?!? This book did not stand the test of time for me. But I would love to see it revised with a different ending. The illustrations are lovely and well tiki tiki tembo is super fun to say.

One of the most read books when I was a kid. Wanted to share it with my kids. This is a story about two brothers who care for each other. The youngest tries to get help for his big brother who has fallen in the well, but because of the older brother’s super long name he has difficulty expressing the emergency to adults to get help in time.

I read this as a child growing up, it was my favorite book. Of course like most people as you get older you throw away or get rid of things from your childhood and teenage days. When my niece started kindergarten I knew reading was going to be required and i wanted to share with her my favorite story from childhood, so i purchased this book to read to her and hope she will appreciate it as much as i did. Well needless to say she does share my appreciation or enjoyment of this book, but it matters not because i still enjoy this book as an adult.

When I was a child I loved this book so I knew I had to purchase it to read to my children. My daughter has memorized Tikki Tikki's full name and enjoys reciting it with me. This is a classic book! The moral of the story may be a little politically incorrect these days but I don't dwell on that part and if a parent wanted to, they can skip that last page. It's such a fun book to read.

My mom read this to me as a kid, and it was one of my favorites. As an adult I’m not sure how I feel about the cultural messages in the book, but it’s definitely fun to read out loud and the illustrations are pleasing to look at

I ordered this for my boss's granddaughter because it kept coming up in conversation and how I could still remember the kid's whole name (but not his brother's short, simple name, I kept thinking it was Chris, believe it's Chang). The artwork is fun and the book is so absurd, but nostalgia.

A central theme is the enabling of high-bandwidth communications in a cost-effective manner for the development of customer applications. These volumes are an ideal reference for R&D engineers and managers, optical systems implementers, university researchers and students, network operators, and investors. Volume A is devoted to components and subsystems, including photonic integrated circuits, multicore and few-mode fibers, photonic crystals, silicon photonics, signal processing, and optical interconnections. Volume B is devoted to systems and networks, including advanced modulation formats, coherent detection, Tb/s channels, space-division multiplexing, reconfigurable networks, broadband access, undersea cable, satellite communications, and microwave photonics. About the Editors: Ivan Kaminow retired from Bell Labs in 1996 after a 42-year career. He conducted seminal studies on electrooptic modulators and materials, Raman scattering in ferroelectrics, integrated optics, semiconductor lasers (DBR, ridge waveguide), birefringent optical fibers, and WDM networks. Content is relevant but I am having an issue with the figures contained in the book. The graphs were authored as multi-color in many places and illustrate important concepts, I can however not view the graphs as they are not color! Additionally the book actually refers to it's digital versions to obtain the color figures but those didn't come with this purchase. A hundred dollar book but it doesn't have color graphs?Update: Publisher does not have access to the color figures! They will not provide the pdf without additional cost (even though they refer to the color figures in their figure descriptions). Avoid this book in printed form. Customer Service was a failure.
