Most readers tend to develop a sense of instinct regarding a story, its characters, and where the written journey is headed. We develop this air of superiority that we know all things, nothing can take us by surprise, and the author writes under our guidance alone.Many authors do a wonderful job giving us this illusion, and at times, perhaps we do see things coming before they are intended to be revealed. Perhaps occasionally we are smarter than the author and his or her characters.Prepare to lose all of that smug superiority when you read this book. Throw it out the window and just clip in for a ride that you have no idea where you will end up. Megan Whalen Turner doesn't even pretend to give you, the reader, and edge. She boldly writes to confuse, to veil, to leave you walking through a maze in the dark wondering what the heck is going on. And I think she enjoys it. I almost feel that the characters themselves knew that they had me over a barrel, and they relished it.I would have given up, moved on to something with more immediate payoff, but I decided to actually look up this series that I had just randomly picked from my Kindle library. I did not know what I had stumbled upon, and the raving reviews from fans sent me back to the story. At about 73%, I finally started to get the picture. By the end, I'm hooked. This author is brilliant, she tricked me, fooled me, led me around by the nose and her own characters mocked my ignorance....and I can't wait to come back for more. Somehow, being surprised by events, and truly likable characters that I had disliked for most of the book was refreshing. It reminded me that sometimes you have to look deeper, I don't know the whole story, and people can surprise you.Well done, Ms. Turner. You pulled off a feat that few authors have, you surprised me.And for any readers who were as confused by the landscape as I was, the map is at the back of the book. Consult it often and spare yourself the head scratching.

"The Thief" is the opening book in a fantasy series. The age of the first person narrator isn't given, but I imagined him as about fifteen years old, and the edition I read was marketed as young adult. Whatever the perceived audience, I enjoyed this very much. The tale is very well told, with details that brought me into the scenes, a sharp wit, and a sympathy for the characters. The book includes fantasy elements, but they don't surface early on. Instead the focus is firmly on the young protagonist--the eponymous thief--and his difficulties.I have three more remarks, each of which constitute mild spoilers.... Firstly, certain information is withheld from the reader. This is a tactic I usually dislike, but which I found it acceptable here, partly because it seems in keeping with the narrator's character, and partly because it didn't lessen my enjoyment while I was reading. Secondly, I was drawn to several of the secondary world details, which have the flavor of Ancient Greece, and my edition includes an author's note at the end discussing this. Thirdly, and which is perhaps a more-than-mild spoiler, a character death occurs that saddened me, but that was appropriate to the story.I have already ordered the next four books in the series.

When Gen falls into her clutches, she takes something important from him, but he steals something much more important from her.In The King of Attolia, the third book, Attolia gets the king it needs but doesn’t want, and in order for Gen the thief to obtain the one thing he wants most, he also has to take what comes with it — which is the last thing he wantsI think the story was originally supposed to end here, but I can see how Ms. Turner couldn’t let it go. It is the story of how a boy becomes a man, how a man becomes a king, and how the young apprentice puts the heir of Sounis on his throne.I suspect that Ms. Turner succumbed to the plea that every story teller hopes to hear, “Just one more story! Please!” That “one more story” is Thick as Thieves. In it, the chief slave of the former Mede ambassador to the court of Attolia tells how Attolia’s king enacted his revenge on both master and slave.I was lucky that the first three books were already out when I started The Thief. I only had to wait two days for the second and third books to arrive from Amazon. I read them again when the fourth book came out, and have just finished reading them all again now that the fifth book is out. I know at some point I’ll want to read them all again. Yes, they are that good. By the end of the first chapter of The Thief, the characters had stepped off the page and into the miniseries that was playing in my head as I continued reading. As I said at the start of this, do yourself a favor and read the books in order. Just when you think you know how the tale is going to go, the tale takes an unexpected twist. Things are not what they seem, and people are not who you think they are.Oh, and did I mention the volcano?*Don’t tell me a queendom isn’t a thing. If a country ruled by a king is a kingdom, then a country ruled by a queen is a queendom. Sit down and hush.

Love this book -- it's what I go back to every time I need a refresher on verb conjugations, BUT BEWARE: the Kindle version has a major design flaw: the book is full of very important vocabulary tables and translation examples. In fact you NEED to be able to reference these in order to do many of the exercises. But whoever converted the book text for the electronic version converted those tables as *tiny images* rather than as text. This is important because Kindle lets you increase the size of the font, HOWEVER because the vocab tables are saved as IMAGES rather than as text, ***increasing the font size doesn't change the size of the tables.*** When using the Kindle for PC app, there's absolutely no way to increase the size of the images so I need to squint and get my head close to the monitor (see the attached image; that's how small the vocab tables appear in the Kindle-for-PC app). Using the Kindle app for phone, the tables are way too small to be readable, but at least the phone app has a "zoom" function to view larger versions of images...BUT that makes you navigate the image-zoom interface and takes you completely away from the text on the rest of the page. This makes it completely unusable for quick reference...and quick reference is absolutely critical to actually doing the exercises in the book(!) In short: great book, but buy the paper copy because Kindle version makes for a really inconvenient experience.

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I want to relearn my high school Spanish and become fluent. I wanted a workbook that introduced topics then gave me the opportunity to translate and work problems out. Then, I could check my answers in the back of it. This is PERFECT. There is also a companion app that you can download with flashcards that help to practice the same material while you are on the go.

I love the book. Getting back to learning Spanish is made easier. Full of practice. I don't like the True/False exercises as they don't challenge me to conjugate the verbs, which is of utmost importance in learning Spanish along with a good vocabulary.

It is just what I need to study Spanish verbs on my own at home.It has excellent explanations if how and when to use the different verb tenses. I wish I had this book years ago

I'm taking Spanish for beginners and this is the text we use in class. I find this book to be easy and informative. It really smooth out the basics for me. Now I'm continuing with rosetta stone and I have a better understanding. Plus the app make it easy to learn even if you don't have the book; and it's free.

This is a great book for learning Spanish verbs. I don't learn quickly so I go back through this book year after year. What I really like is that you can download the app that goes with it and do the exercises using the app. It makes it easier to view the answers and the best thing is that if you have wifi it will read you the answer in perfect Spanish which is really important for getting your accent right. I have used this book more than any other book resource I have.

I am an intermediate Spanish student, trying to kick my Spanish up a notch. This book was extremely helpful, and I did all the exercises and my knowledge of Spanish verbs improved accordingly. I showed some of the exercises to my teacher and he was impressed. He felt that the exercises were demanding and pertinent. The exercises where they give you a whole paragraph to translate are particularly good, I feel, because they push you beyond one line sentences. I think that this practice makes perfect series is good quality and I will be buying more of their books.

Very helpful wide-ranging guide that we use to supplement our daughter's classroom education. Contains dozens and dozens of drills/work-sheets for written practice and as an aid for memorization. This is best-used as a reinforcement for visual and oral practice and concepts learned in a classroom--it's not really designed to "teach" (unless someone is extraordinarily self-directed).Only reason I haven't given it five stars is that we have found some errors/quirks in the answer key that aren't well-explained.Also, the reasons "why" certain concepts are the way they are isn't well-explained--it is just assumed that readers will memorize without question.

Not content to just TALK about the hobby, the book encourages the reader to give it a try by devoting chapters to miniature painting, terrain creation, and no less than THREE separate sets of rules for various eras, all written in a style that is simple, but doesn't insult the reader's intelligence.Seriously, if you are interested in the miniature wargaming hobby, BUY THIS BOOK. If it doesn't inspire you to give it a try, your soul fell out somewhere...

First I must confess to being a board war gamer (always have been, always will be) but have enjoyed looking into and admiring miniature war games.I downloaded this book this morning and then spent next too hours browsing from cover to cover.Photos are great, writing is interesting and well put together, loved the history, the games ideas and the contact info at end. Also liked the way on kindle on my iPad I could connect to the various web sites.This book strikes me as a labour of love from someone who enjoys their hobby.Worth every cent for Kindle edition (pictures come out well on iPad) and miniature war gamers would enjoy the hard copy.AndrewAustralia

For me, this is the new, modern day, de facto standard for the all-encompassing guide to the wargaming hobby. Well written, beautiful to look at, chock full of useful advice and tips, and even containing its own set of rules (several in fact), I don't forsee anyone surpassing this stellar effort from Henry Hyde anytime soon. Highly recommended for every wargamer's bookshelf.

I purchased the Kindle version after listening to Mr. Hyde's interviews and conversations via the Meeples and Miniatures site. Much of his passion for the simpler games that are played with model soldiers come out in this book. It has a very heavy focus on the "horse and musket" period of gaming but does give comprehensive overviews of many of the other periods.Mr. Hyde starts with a history of his undertaking into the hobby then moves in to descriptions of the myriad of games types and equipment that one acquires to play the games. A set of Napoleonic style of rules are included along with a sample replay so as to better illustrate what should take place.One of the positions he takes which peaked my interest was that he never found much panache in the naval wargaming sector. Grey ships on a Grey sea just doesn't garner any excitement. I would recommend this book to the beginner or the grognard type who wants a more simple type of game. This is not intended for the FOW tournament player or the Challenger Modern MBT guy.My only complaint is that the pages are not numbered in the Kindle version so that all the PDFs of the book are unavailable for download. I only wish the password was tagged to the photo description or some such. The charts in the Kindle display get cut off so you can only see the first 70-80% before it is cut off.

Henry Hyde has poured a lifetime of wargaming experience into this book. Whether it is about painting, basing, modeling, rules development, the evolution of the hobby from H.G. Wells to today, and yes, WARGAMING, he covers it, and it covers it well.It is well written and beautiful to just thumb through and look at the the pictures.If you are into any kind of wargaming, Ancients to SCIFI, Napoleonics to WWZ, this book is a great addition to your library, and I think you will find yourself coming back to it for a long time to come.Gary Strombo
