So... DevOps.DevOps is this mythical assembly line of progress that gets code from point A to point B in record time, and by record time, I mean no time. Coded, auto-tested, out the door, bing, bang, boom. The book was an entertaining read (and/or listen) and the authors cleverly couch the concepts of DevOps into a story about a failed delivery system (The Phoenix Project) built ala WaterFall, versus a new system hastily assembled (heh, see what I did there?) on an impromptu assembly line and delivered in record time, performing brilliantly - when compared to the failed behemoth Phoenix Project.So... here's the problem with DevOps, and the problem with this book.Companies with a nightmarish legacy code base (delivered or not as-of-yet out the door) that are attempting to build DevOps are using the same people that created their behemoth nightmare in the first place. As does the company in the hypothetical story in the book. Worse. The CEO in the book is a horribly bad boss, making wrong decision after wrong decision (I am sure to ramp up the tension to illustrate the saving graces of DevOps). So, I can tell you definitively that ANY company with leadership like that would lose their brilliant techs almost immediately. The market is in desperate need of brilliant techs so there is zero possibility that they are going to stick around a cess pool of politics when they can get a signing bonus and a raise from a company already doing it better and faster, and all without the drama. I'm just saying. And in order to pull off a DevOps operation, you absolutely need brilliant techs. You need tight, well executed product code with sufficient testing hooks so you can automate as you go. So you need brilliant QA that can understand and/or code the hooks right along-side the devs.In short, you need a whole lot more than a single Brent. You just do. And to imagine that there are a room full of brilliant techs writing broken down shoddy bloated code for Phoenix, but then can turn around and write the brilliantly architected code you need for the DevOps project... well... I am able to suspend belief when called upon, but this was more like taking it out back, shooting it, and burying it six feet under. I'm just sayin'.And with that being said, I am a huge, ginormous fan of DevOps (and the book was a FUN read / listen, thus the 4 stars instead of 3). It just takes an incredible talent pool to pull DevOps off and books like this makes companies think they just have to implement this process with the talent they have and poof! instant quality software that can be delivered instantaneously! Woohoo! They would be better served facing the reality of the mess they have, caused by (possibly) a lack of reasonable process, yah, but almost certainly by lack of talent as well. That's basically how they got where they got.Off soap box now. Doing the tango. Eating Oreos. Feel free to join!

The Phoenix Project is a business book masquerading as a work of fiction. As soon as I started evaluating The Phoenix Project in the context of a business book, rather than fiction, I started enjoying it a lot more, gaining much more insight into the concepts presented, rather than focusing on the unsophisticated prose and highly contrived scenarios. The "plot" serves as a vehicle for the authors to explore and pontificate on the business ideologies presented throughout. The main character, Bill, is mentored through each of these concepts, implementing them for the benefit of the reader to see the dramatic impact each can have on a business. For the most part, this is well executed, but it can become tedious when the characters "furiously take notes, so that they can google the terms later." Yes, the authors really write this, banging the reader of the head with, "Hey Dummy, are you paying attention? This is important."One of the best parts of the book was actually after the fictional plot ended, and the authors took the extra time to collect the concepts presented and revist them in a brief summary at the end. I hoped for this, as going back through The Phoenix Project to find each in turn, and learn more would have been difficult. If I could suggest to the authors an improvement, it would be to break the 4th wall during the fictional telling of the plot, and provide footnotes or references to the reader referencing where in the summary section they can read a bit more about a given concept. Nothing would be lost by this approach, as the reader quicky realizes the point and purpose of the plot anyways.Overall, The Phoenix Project provides an easy way for non-business people to get their feet wet with process improvements, without making the explanations and concepts too burdensome. I find myself quoting passages with co-workers who've also read the book, realizing that all too many of the scenarios presented are real life problems we face everyday (though perhaps less severely than in the Phoenix Project.) As such, I know I've already taken something away from the book, even if I won't have a chance to master every improvement, or even experiment with them all. It provides a new way of thinking about software development, and all the organizations it impacts. Four stars.

I have read nearly all of the books on trying to square the game between your ears with the physical game of golf and this one is highest on my list. Joseph Parent reviews nearly all aspects of the weaknesses one experiences in both competitive and non-competitive golf. In many ways, I now seem to enjoy playing more than I have in years and I have played the game since I was nine years old. Now 60 years later I only wish I had this resource years ago. It is a no miss purchase if you love and play the game of golf. The author obviously does both.

Probably one of the most important books I have ever read. I was so impressed after reading the kindle version I bought the hardback copy as well for my library. There wasn't a single page that didn't contain words of wisdom. After reading the first half of the book I put into practice some of the processes Mr Parent talked about and I have to say I have never enjoyed 18 holes more. At 60 I have been playing for about 4 years and am a 12 handicapper. This book will take me to another level. But the real kicker is that it isn't just a book about golf... Brilliant!

Good, practical advice for the mental aspects of golf. Definitely helped me realize that most of my issues are confidence and mental. Great guide for how to approach the game mentally.

I am not done with this book yet. However, I am going to write the review early. While I noticed some people who reviewed this book mentioned that the info is "obvious", the fact is that most truths are obvious once learned. Some of the biggest epiphanies seem extremely clear and obvious once they are had. There is no reason to mention the obviousness, when the value is not in the obscurity, or lack thereof, of the information. I played a round yesterday after reading about a third of this book, and kept a few of the ideas in mind, and I am extremely happy with the results. I had more fun, and was more relaxed. I am still new to the game, but I am making steady progress, and I am really glad I found this book so early in my career. There is no reason for me to sloppily tell you the short version of the ideas here. I am telling you right now that no matter where you are in your game, you will be happy you got this book. It is not magic, it does not tell you how to astrally project the ball into the hole, it is just there to tell you some fundamental ideas that will help your mental game. BUY THIS NOW. You will not regret it for a minute. I can't think of any resource that could have helped my game so dramatically for so cheap.

As a life long golfer in his very late fifties I kept thinking as I read this book that the majority of this novel was simply common sense. But, the more I thought about what I will call Zen lessons, the more I thought...no they’re really not.There is a tremendous amount of wisdom within this book. However, you have to be willing to open up your mind to the ideology. You have to rid your thinking of...yeah, I already know that...and truly absorb the concepts. There’s no doubt it will improve your performance.

What a treat this book is. Started slowly but wow did I get some really good pointers. Had to keep notes just to track them all and make sure I practiced the teachings. I highly recommend it for golfers trying to grow their mental game. Great literature.

It's helped me to focus on the moment, and not so much the past or future. It has greatly improved my attitude towards things I found frustrating.Originally, I bought this to help my mental game in golf. But, I've learned I can also apply in life. Highly, recommend this book to anyone struggling in life, and their golf game.

I have been a golfer for fifty years but never read or studied much on the mental side of the game. This book raised my awareness of how the mind and body must interact to be successful in golf and life. Dr. Parent's examples and parables reminded me of Yoda teaching young Luke Skywalker about the "Force". Now there are no lightsabers involved but learning to train my mind to best deal with the task at hand was illuminating. The good doctor gives plenty of solid recommendations on how to be more mindful and deal with extraneous thoughts that can subtly torpedo your game. Highest recommendation.

In the spring of 1990, the Chicago Bulls fell to the Detroit Pistons in the NBA playoffs for the third consecutive season. But the Bulls had their strongest team ever going into the 1990-91 campaign and were looking to get over their past playoff failures and claim their elusive first championship. Sam Smith chronicles how the club attained its long-sought goal that year in "The Jordan Rules."Smith profiles coach Phil Jackson, superstar Michael Jordan, and the rest of the key players on the team throughout his account of the long campaign. The author notes some of the moves that the Bulls did and did not make to build their title team. Those who remember this book coming out in the winter of 1992 recall that most of the commentary about "The Jordan Rules" back then focused on Jordan's mistreatment of his teammates, and some of the vignettes on that score are indeed worse than just normal razzing.The 1991 Bulls were a great team but went through the inevitable rough patches during the season. Smith recalls the conflicts over the triangle offense and the infighting and dissension that went on, but the Bulls came together for the playoffs, finally having the mental strength to get over the Pistons hurdle and then to beat the aging Lakers in the Finals. While "The Jordan Rules" is most famous for its lurid aspects, Smith's account is a good retrospective on the entirety of the Bulls' breakthrough season.

A very interesting book to read nearly 25 years after it was written. This book was a page turner for me as I grew up watching these Bulls teams while starting to pick up basketball. This was an insider's view and a great piece of sports journalism, how different this era is now.Reading this book made me realize how much Sam Smith wanted to write Breaks of the Game 2. The way the characters are laid out and what goes on in their lives is almost a carbon copy of David Halberstam. I would have gave this 5 stars if I hadn't read the classic by Halberstam. People will be more drawn to this because of Jordan, but do yourself a favor if you read this to go back and read Breaks of the Game.

The alternative title could have been, "Why, Yes, Michael Jordan Really Was An Unpleasant Teammate." It's also a fascinating glimpse of Phil Jackson before he became the Zen Master, as it seems as if he was barely holding on to the reins of the team; and, even then, liked to play little mind games. It's crazy that they managed to be cohesive enough to be as successful as they were.

I have been reading the book Jordan Rules. Jordan Rules is a book about the Chicago Bulls team over the Michael Jordan era. It gives great insight to the player widely accepted as the greatest ever, Michael Jordan. There were dark secrets revealed about him, about he was a jerk in the locker room, how he insulted his teammates and didn't pass to them. There are little stories about most of the other players, such as Scottie Pippen, Horace Grant, John Paxon, John Hopson, Will Perdue, and Bill Cartwright. There are also stories about the staff, like Phil Jackson, Jerry Krause, and Billy Reinsdorf, the owner. Michael Jordan wasn't the perfect guy, he was kind of mean, none of his teammates really liked him. One of the stories that I really enjoyed was about John Paxon, on how he was the most underpaid starting point guard in the lauge, but he still somehow hung in there, deferred to Jordan and played some gritty defense. I loved this book, it is great for basketball fans of all ages.

Starting from the bust ups, the player insecurities, the arrival of Big Phil, its all put together very neatly to show the journey of the bulls of that season. Excellent write up and the reader gets some amazing insights into the bulls franchise and the NBA of that era. The various psychological aspects of the players, coaches, managers...their need for money...hunger for success...fears of being traded...we tend to think of athletes like they are from a different planet. but they all are really human, even MJ. Yes, even MJ. And this book shows you how,

The intimate account is largely entertaining and light but occasionally is bogged down by the cacophony of subplots, back stories and strained metaphors.If you have a strong interest in Michael Jordan and are willing to accept the premise that he was flawed as both a person and a teammate (blasphemy for some), then you will enjoy this book's insight and honesty.

Good view of the backstage of the first Bulls championship. Fun to read in retrospect after all that happened afterwards. The digital edition brings an interesting afterword written more recently. At times it may become a little boring on the game by game of the regular season. It is very interesting to read the doubtful and slow transformation that Jordan has - or tries to have - from an individual to a team player, and the role that Phil Jackson had on it. Probably my main discovery was about the smart personality of Jackson, it will probably get me to "Eleven Rings".

The writing is not exactly Hemingway (as most sports books are written by sportswriters, including this one) but the story told and the incredible level of access that Sam Smith was granted is unparalled. I can't imagine anybody being closer to a team and thus being able to include so many of players' and coaches' thoughts, words, and actions behind the scenes. The beginning of the book is a little too focused on Sam Smith and his relationship with Jordan (and how that relationship changed after the book came out) but once the story really gets rolling it is hard to put down. Highly recommended for any sports fan with even a passing interest in the NBA and Michael Jordan. Hardcore NBA fans and Jordan aficionados will likely be even more fascinated. I certainly was.

The book is be readable with practices that are backed up by many examples and stories. I also liked answering how do you pick your provider-if we as customers asked those questions it would be a catalyst for change. Though I am a health IT person I liked the practical discussion of not getting enamored by virtual medicine hyped appeal but seeing the very practical telehealth and new care coordination models can work. The other key concept is the packaging of changes that can be adapted and extended to meet the organization's situational specific needs. I wish there were a few pictures- I like them and I think some of the states are really working transformation like Delaware and others. This is a great read for optimists like me!

Dr. Emanuel demonstrates that there are incremental improvements that could, if more widely adopted, reduce the cost of delivering health care in the United States.What is good about the book is that it's approach is evolutionary rather than revolutionary.What needs is improvement -- perhaps one more chapter at the end -- is a GREATER SENSE OF URGENCY re: broader implementation of these basic and achievable results.

I teach health care at the college level. Dr. Emanuel does a great job of laying out some of the solutions providers have found to both improve customer service and healthcare outcomes. If you work in healthcare and are wondering where the ACA is leading the Amercian Healthcare systems.

My husband loved being educated by this author. He took notes as he read the book, and has been discussing the book with friends. So few people are truly educated in health care and costs, and if we were we would no doubt lobby for significant changes.

In the midst of the chaos the U.S. health care "system" currently is, this book brings me hope that things will evolve into a system that rewards the efforts that create both reduction in costs AND improvement in quality of care and outcomes!

Brilliant book.....if people could leave their egos somewhere else; truly work in teams; they could save money and provide real quality healthcare. This is a wonderful book.....you can take these ideas and work with them in many different organizations!

a spot on analysis about the shortcomings of our current healthcare system and real-world examples of how it can be fixed.

I'm only almost through chapter two right now but am getting excited about some policy implementation information shared in the book. Good stuff! The author seems to have a great grasp of big picture issues.

Most readers tend to develop a sense of instinct regarding a story, its characters, and where the written journey is headed. We develop this air of superiority that we know all things, nothing can take us by surprise, and the author writes under our guidance alone.Many authors do a wonderful job giving us this illusion, and at times, perhaps we do see things coming before they are intended to be revealed. Perhaps occasionally we are smarter than the author and his or her characters.Prepare to lose all of that smug superiority when you read this book. Throw it out the window and just clip in for a ride that you have no idea where you will end up. Megan Whalen Turner doesn't even pretend to give you, the reader, and edge. She boldly writes to confuse, to veil, to leave you walking through a maze in the dark wondering what the heck is going on. And I think she enjoys it. I almost feel that the characters themselves knew that they had me over a barrel, and they relished it.I would have given up, moved on to something with more immediate payoff, but I decided to actually look up this series that I had just randomly picked from my Kindle library. I did not know what I had stumbled upon, and the raving reviews from fans sent me back to the story. At about 73%, I finally started to get the picture. By the end, I'm hooked. This author is brilliant, she tricked me, fooled me, led me around by the nose and her own characters mocked my ignorance....and I can't wait to come back for more. Somehow, being surprised by events, and truly likable characters that I had disliked for most of the book was refreshing. It reminded me that sometimes you have to look deeper, I don't know the whole story, and people can surprise you.Well done, Ms. Turner. You pulled off a feat that few authors have, you surprised me.And for any readers who were as confused by the landscape as I was, the map is at the back of the book. Consult it often and spare yourself the head scratching.

"The Thief" is the opening book in a fantasy series. The age of the first person narrator isn't given, but I imagined him as about fifteen years old, and the edition I read was marketed as young adult. Whatever the perceived audience, I enjoyed this very much. The tale is very well told, with details that brought me into the scenes, a sharp wit, and a sympathy for the characters. The book includes fantasy elements, but they don't surface early on. Instead the focus is firmly on the young protagonist--the eponymous thief--and his difficulties.I have three more remarks, each of which constitute mild spoilers.... Firstly, certain information is withheld from the reader. This is a tactic I usually dislike, but which I found it acceptable here, partly because it seems in keeping with the narrator's character, and partly because it didn't lessen my enjoyment while I was reading. Secondly, I was drawn to several of the secondary world details, which have the flavor of Ancient Greece, and my edition includes an author's note at the end discussing this. Thirdly, and which is perhaps a more-than-mild spoiler, a character death occurs that saddened me, but that was appropriate to the story.I have already ordered the next four books in the series.

When Gen falls into her clutches, she takes something important from him, but he steals something much more important from her.In The King of Attolia, the third book, Attolia gets the king it needs but doesn’t want, and in order for Gen the thief to obtain the one thing he wants most, he also has to take what comes with it — which is the last thing he wantsI think the story was originally supposed to end here, but I can see how Ms. Turner couldn’t let it go. There was still one person who needed to tell his story.In the fourth book, A Conspiracy of Kings, the chief advisor of Sounis’ young apprentice, whom we met in The Thief, gets to tell his tale. It is the story of how a boy becomes a man, how a man becomes a king, and how the young apprentice puts the heir of Sounis on his throne.I suspect that Ms. Turner succumbed to the plea that every story teller hopes to hear, “Just one more story! Please!” That “one more story” is Thick as Thieves. In it, the chief slave of the former Mede ambassador to the court of Attolia tells how Attolia’s king enacted his revenge on both master and slave.I was lucky that the first three books were already out when I started The Thief. I only had to wait two days for the second and third books to arrive from Amazon. I read them again when the fourth book came out, and have just finished reading them all again now that the fifth book is out. I know at some point I’ll want to read them all again. Yes, they are that good. By the end of the first chapter of The Thief, the characters had stepped off the page and into the miniseries that was playing in my head as I continued reading. As I said at the start of this, do yourself a favor and read the books in order. Just when you think you know how the tale is going to go, the tale takes an unexpected twist. Things are not what they seem, and people are not who you think they are.Oh, and did I mention the volcano?*Don’t tell me a queendom isn’t a thing. If a country ruled by a king is a kingdom, then a country ruled by a queen is a queendom. Sit down and hush.

I have also picked up some High-School Grads that tested below the ENG requirement level for Collage.*THE GAP IN OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM IS APPALLING*As a tutor I have to do my best for the students and working with this and the other books helps.Recommend for anyone that needs to refresh or study for The PLACEMENT TEST.

My daughter is going through this book and seems to be enjoying it. I haven't spend much time in it myself, but I like how it is broken down into sections and it's easy enough to understand for my almost 11 year old, but is useful enough for adults too.

English is my second language and even if I'm fluent, I wanted a book about the key concepts of the English grammar (because sometimes I get confused or forget something). This book is more for either kids learning grammar OR an adult learning English. It's not bad at all, it's just not what I was looking for.

I am much more aware of my grammar, thanks to this book. Sometimes, I wish I lived with an English teacher. Since I do not, I use this book to help correct my grammar.

Just made me review and start writing better in a small period of time each day. I studied it for the month of September and I feel more confident.
