#241,281 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I have a weird child-like fondness for the WoT, the first volumes of which I read as a kid, and this is an interesting and well-written supplement to the series. It illuminates some of the details and logistics of the philosophy, magic system, and cultures of the WOT books in an clear, engaging way. Since RJ was involved, I think a reader can reasonably take the content here as canon, if you will.On the other hand, the book has two major weaknesses. One is that is was compiled and published mid-way through the series -- so it is far from comprehensive. There are things I was curious to look up in this book that simply aren't there, because they didn't exist in the series itself yet. (A more comprehensive encyclopedia edited by Jordan's wife is due out late in 2015, I believe.)Two, is that the art is pretty god-awful. And that's coming from someone who actually kind of *likes* the mass market paperback cover art for the series. If you think that art is bad, this is far worse. It's sort of embarrassingly poor.So in short, this is okay -- if you're a fan and you can get it cheap, I'd say go for it. Otherwise wait for the newer reference due out soon.

The Wheel of Time series is at the top of my list for fantasy literature. I found this book to be very informative, and I particularly enjoyed the age of legends section. I only wish the book had an update to reflect closure for the series. Also, I would love it if Brandon Sanderson would write a prequel novel covering the age of legends in greater depth.

I am a big fan of the WoT books. I've always been a little disappointed with the artwork the publisher produced. I was not impressed with this book's artwork either. The information within does not do much to enhance the experience for WoT readers. Even though I was disappointed, I will not tell all Wheel of Time fans to stay away. It depends on your expectations. If you love the books and want to buy up everything related to them, this will enhance your collection. The book is professional and accurate to the series. If you have not read all the books you should be aware that there could be some spoilers. This books defines a 3 star review- competent, but not impressive. To this day the best WoT art has been the fan art and the recent eBook covers.

Seriously, couldn't they have gotten someone other than Napoleon Dynamite to do the artwork for this book? I mean, isn't The Wheel of Time series one of the most popular fantasy series in the history of books? The illustrations are incredibly inaccurate and hilariously bad. Lanfear, who's supposed to be, like, the most beautiful woman ever, looks like a greasy-haired Drew Barrymore with a bad nose job. And I swear he used a photo of Keanu Reeves for the (capeless) Myrdraal. I could go on and on... Pretty much like the covers of the books (which are at least done with a bit more accomplishment), the illustrations all look like they were done by someone who never actually read any of the books. With all the amazing fantasy illustrators out there, I just don't understand. The book itself is a decent expansion on some of the historical bits from the series.

This is a great reference or companion book to Jordan's epic series. It is written well and blends to be a lot like an encyclopedia of the history for the world of these books, including past and present events, characters, maps, political evolutions of the realms, etc. A very valuable reference to the experience, such as looking up the cast of characters; listing The Forsaken or the heroes, and their biographies for example. I am very happy to have this book, especially in hardback. Having good maps alone was worth buying the book.An important warning: much like a "spoiler alert", I must say that reading this book along with (simultaneously) the beginning books of the series will certainly spoil the unfolding of the storyline. For myself, I read the first two books and had a desire to look more closely at the maps and have a nice reference to high-quality maps while reading. I acquired the reference while still in book three, and began reading the history of events and people, such as the Aes Sedai, and learned information that had not occurred yet (in my progress through the series). When a reader learns ahead of time "the whodunits" such as when people die, who kills them, who takes their place, etc. it is definitely a spoiler. I am not even halfway through the entire series, but have learned to be careful in that way. Some information I learned too early made me feel like some things were ruined for me. In that way it is less of a companion book and more of an encyclopedia. I know I will enjoy reading parts of it as I go, but will likely enjoy it more as I wish to remember and refer back. That warning is the only negative aspect I might offer. Aside from wishing some of the character portraits were more realistic (artwork) I have nothing but a positive recommendation at this time.

I have been searching for years for this book. A suggested list of books came up while I was searching for another book and I saw it there. I bought it right away. The book came yesterday as promised and it is a phenomenal amount of detailed and richly illustrated information about everything in the series. It is literally, an encyclopedia of The Wheel of Time Series by Robert Jordan. I am now reading the thirteenth and final installment in the series and I will be reading them all again. I recommend this book to anyone that loves this series.

This book has great art and detailed descriptions of many aspects of the series. The author himself and a friend created this gem before the series was complete so there are some things missing but the things it has rival other such lexicons on other series. Robert Jordan left behind a great legacy in this series and also in this side note. It details the people places and things found in the series and gives some background on things prior to the series. It is a must have for the hardcore fan or for the newbie who wants to build on the awe they get from reading this fantastic piece of art.

This book fills in a lot of what's missing in the series, including maps of Seanchen. If you love this series, get this book.

#35,609 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I downloaded the e-book believing that the book had been published in 2011 (only the ebook edition had been published in that year), but then, having realized that the paperback dated from 1997, I was at first disappointed, then I considered it an asset as it would be interesting to see what information had been added to the story over those 13 years.Bruce Paley did not convince me that Mary Kelly's lover, Joseph Barnett, was Jack the Ripper, but he sure caught my attention telling why he thought that Barnett was JtR.He also has my admiration for having done some splendid research. Being a true crime writer myself, I can well imagine the mass of material he must have had when finally he started to write 'The Simple Truth'.He is an excellent writer and never did I have a dull moment reading this book.

I enjoyed this book. I am by no means a Ripper expert, but it is well written and definitely persuasive. My only real issue with this book is that it focuses one person as the suspect. After reading this, it is hard to believe that that suspect was not the killer, but it would have been nice for the author to address some of the other suspects, at least to help us understand fully why he dismisses them.

Bruce Paley has written a great piece of Ripper literature. "Jack the Ripper: The Simple Truth" is meticulously researched, well written, and quite entertaining. It paints a picture of Whitechapel and East London that made it quite real to me. He lays out a convincing case against Joe Barnett. Paley's thesis was quite original when he first introduced it. There is very little actual evidence against Barnett, but Paley uses modern methodology to point right at the person who would be one of the first suspects today. The boyfriend of one of the victims. The Kindle version does have some formatting problems, but I didn't find any that interfered with the flow of the book. I'm reviewing the book, and I found it very well done. It's well worth a read to anyone interested in Ripperology, Victorian London, true crime, or serial killers. I liked this book very much and could barely put it down. I can't say if this is the best Ripper book out there, but I can say that I enjoyed it a lot.I also found the meticulous endnotes and research very useful for further study.

Bruce Paley has given this investigation new legs. His proposal of a new Jack the Ripper is very well researched and his conclusion is solid.I don't think ANYONE will ever truly know who Jack the Ripper was, but he weaves a fascinating argument in favor of his pick.Paley has obviously done an exhaustive investigation of both Jack the Ripper and his victims. I have read a lot of articles and books on this subject and, while I am no expert, there was a tremendous amount of information that I didn't know existed. Especially about the victims. If you are a budding Ripperologist or just interested in a new approach on an old theme, this is a great place to start. If you are one of the many people who actively study the Ripper murders, don't pass this book by. Even if you don't agree, there is a lot of historical insight to be gained here.Well written and easy to read and follow.

As far as the book itself, I loved it. Thought it very well researched and thought out, and Barnett is certainly one of the most viable candidates for the Ripper. However, and this is the reason for the two stars (for the book itself I would have given five), there are so many typos, ranging from running five words together as one to consistently showing words containing the letter combination "r n" as "m", that it makes reading it extremely annoying, if not impossible. Many times I had to reread a sentence several times before I could figure it out. More careful editing please!

The Kindle version is filled with typographical errors to the point that it is nearly unreadable. In addition, the well-known mortuary photographs of the victims are labeled incorrectly. If facts this common and well known are wrong, why should I believe any other fact the author presents? The story is well presented, and I cannot blame the author for the extremely poor reproduction of the Kindle version. Perhaps the print version is better, but I just cannot recommend this title.

I really enjoyed the details of life during late 19th century East End London.; what a difficult life the people had, especially the children.

Good reading. Well documented. Interesting theory of Ripper's story. Personal use.

This book definitely is not extremely broad, as it only covers a few topics related to a modern understanding of celtic spirituality, but it is deep. The detail on each of these subjects made it more informative. It is also a quick read, which made the book more enjoyable.

I really enjoyed this view of the sacred circles of life, color, ages of man and woman, the perspective view of life. I liked it.

Easy readying yet very informative. Cornish touched on me any aspects of the Druid ways without making it long and drawn out.

I am calling my daughters now to read this book. They will appreciate the historical and scientific influences.Thank you.

High lofty ideas with nothing substantial to offer.

This is basically Wicca 101 repackaged as Druidry. The Great Goddess and her Consort? Casting circles? Four elements? Huh? If you want to learn about Druidry, ancient or modern, look elsewhere.

Wonderful read. Very informative.

While there is a lot on the Arduino on the Web (including the authors YouTube videos) this book presents a logical progression from the basics to some more advanced uses of the Arduino. I think Jeremy also succeeds in teaching the why and not just the how.I've gone through several other books and this one is much better than the typical "connect a wire here" beginner books.

I’m coming to review this book rather late. It was published in late 2013, I believe, but I’ve only recently purchased it and wanted to pipe up with my two cents’ worth. As many people would probably say, I originally encountered the works of Jeremy Blum on YouTube. I bought my first Arduino board in late 2013. Being a busy professional and father, I didn’t have a whole lot of time to play around with it.. But I can’t really learn new things in a vacuum, so I quickly developed a project to use my first board on: a timing track for my son’s Boxwood Derby car. (He had a brief interest in the Cub Scouts, which has long since waned.) So searching the Intertubes for training materials on the Arduino was natural. I looked at many of them, but by far the best, at least in my opinion, were the short videos produced on the topic by Jeremy Blum with the support of the electronics supply company Element 14.Jeremy Blum is the host of a series of 15 tutorials for working with Arduinos, sponsored by Element 14. I used those Arduino Tutorial videos to bring myself up to speed quickly.I actually managed to get a timing circuit built in time for my son to enter his car in an elementary school science fair. True, we only re-proved what Galileo figured out in 1638, but still, it’s always nice to see that the laws of physics haven’t changed. I was very grateful to Mr. Blum for his guidance. At the time, I remember being astonished that such clear, cleanly explained training films existed for the Arduino and that they had been created by an undergraduate student! When he announced that he was writing a book, I sort of felt like I owed it to him to buy and read it. (Plus, he had helped to get me hooked on this whole open-source hardware maker movement, so I was naturally curious to learn more.)To summarize my perspective on the book, I’m a working IT professional who had introductory practical electronics courses as a physics student nearly 30 years ago, so many of the concepts here aren’t new to me. I’ve played around with small circuits on my own for many years, but I was never really a hobbyist, more of a dabbler. But with the arrival of the Arduino and the Raspbery Pi, I finally had the opportunity to try out working with microcontrollers. I had always been a bit too busy and perhaps slightly intimidated to take that particular plunge. I think maybe that’s Jeremy’s best trait, he makes you unafraid to try out new things. The other thing I should mention here is that I've worked as a technical writer for many years, so I'm aware of the technical aspects of putting together this kind of hardware/software instructional book. It's a unique kind of challenge to write about both technical hardware and software in a combined work. So, the book . . . I bought the paperback on Amazon during a month in which Mr. Blum turned out to be donating his profits to young fremale engineers. I can certainly get behind that cause and I’m glad it worked out that way. The book, printed by Wiley is nicely printed. I like the texture and design of the cover. The pages are fairly standard for technology/programming books, black and white on a medium-light weight, matte stock. The layout of chapters are clean and crisp; the typography clear and legible and the illustrations printed well in grayscale. The illustrations are basically an even mixture of screen grabs of the Arduino IDE interface, what looks to be Mac OS X operating system windows and elements, circuit diagrams done in Fritzing, a few photos likely taken by the author, and a few black and white line drawings of key concepts. The structure follows the YouTube tutorial videos pretty closely, introducing elementary engineering principles first and then moving on to the basics of how a microcontroller works, the practical capabilities of an Arduino, and then simple and more complex projects created using one. Usually, the author sticks with the Arduino Uno, but he does acknowledge and occasionally even suggest projects for the other models. He starts each chapter calling out the digital resources available related to the material in the chapter, which is nice. He naturally links back to his tutorial videos, but he isn’t shy pointing to other valuable online resources. All of the sketches, diagrams and schematic files he uses are available on a custom website supporting the book. (www.exploringarduino.com)Each chapter goes farther, obviously, than he could in an 8 to 15 minutes web video. I found the extra content illuminating if not terribly exciting. Many of the suggested projects are pretty elementary, but then the goal is to slowly guide a student new to electronics into the topics without scaring them. That, I have to say, is the true gift of this book and of Jeremy Blum’s technique in general. He seems truly skilled at introducing concepts that could be very daunting and making them seem clear and even friendly, in a way.Actually, I want to avoid giving faint praise to this book. I found it quite wonderful. It really is only a book about the Arduino in the same way that ‘Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance’ is about motorcycle maintenance. The subject is a means to an end. The end, I would venture to say, is to train young, eager people to become engineers in both mind and spirit; maybe not even to become professionals, but to become imbued with that sense of curiosity and intellectual audacity that generates the most astonishing innovations in human culture. It doesn’t just walk you through, step-by-step, on how to interface your Arduino with a motor, for example. It uses this as an opportunity to provide an astonishingly clear explanation of what transistors do and how to avoid being intimidated by them. The number of topics he just gradually sidles up to and introduces to the reader is quite charming and amazing at the same time. This is a book on how to think like a maker. Not a “Maker” but rather simply a maker-of-things . . it describes how to be a true engineer, like the Wright Brothers or Archimedes; someone who takes what’s in the world and uses it in interesting and novel ways. The electronics of sound, coding, serial and parallel communications, wireless communications, the key details of devices connected on the Internet, data logging, hardware and software interrupts, dealing with high and low power environments, dealing with servos and pulse-width-modulation, it’s all described in the authors consistently concise, clear, and complete prose. That completeness is quite nice, especially for someone learning the techniques. He doesn’t really assume anything about what the reader knows. He goes out of his way to make sure that every loose end of a project is described in plain ways. What is the difference between a pull-up and pull-down resistor? Why would one want to use polling when interrupts are available? What are the limits of the power supplies you will encounter? This is all useful, practical stuff that many books for beginners either ignore or bury in lots of scary detail.I suspect that Mr. Blum is going to spend many years updating this book. It’s perfect for teaching young engineers or scientists the basics of practical electronics. When studying as an undergrad physics student, you are required to take a course in basic electronics, because most of your experimental work means that you need to design circuits, from simple to robust and complex measurement circuits. This book is a perfect way to introduce these concepts. But being based on the Arduino, a very young technology, means that he’s going to need to update this book every few years to avoid it from going out of date. But it’s so well organized that I suspect updates will be straightforward. And it cries out for the creation of an interactive e-book version, if one isn’t already in the works. I tend to keep an eye on what the author is doing with this and other projects on his personal website, first because I often refer back to his materials and blog posts, but also because I find his ethical take on sharing with younger engineers (and other topics) to be heartening. The only criticisms I have of the book are related to the illustrations. There are several places where elements of illustrations, particularly Fritzing circuit diagrams, are called out by color. I understand that the ebook version includes the diagrams in color, but the printed book emphatically does not. It only happens a few times, but when it does, it can cause some consternation. The other problem I only occasionally had with the illustrations was the size of the text in some screen captures. Getting that consistently correct across a full book can be quite challenging as you pull images from multiple sources. Still, most of the pictures are clean and clear, and the color illustrations could be redesigned slightly in gray scale with callouts emphasizing items from the text.Overall, if you can't guess, I really liked this book. When my sons get a bit older, I will encourage them to read it if they show even the slightest interest in the arcane ways of engineers. This is the kind of book that will teach a young mind not to fear the engineering wizards, but to emulate them. And the world needs all of the engineering wizards it can find these days.

Jeremy Blum is the best combination of a formally trained Electronics Engineer and a Maker/Hacker. His excellent video series promulgated through YouTube and Element 14 is the most complete video tutorial on the Arduino available. But, this Maker's Handbook and introductory engineering text is much more than a rehash or paper documentation for his outstanding video series. While the book could stand alone as an excellent practical introduction to the Arduino, it also serves as a clear (and as much as possible no-math) introduction to principles of electronic engineering and computer science, with a little bit of practical physics thrown in. As an easy to follow engineering textbook Jeremy's "Exploring Arduino" offers the most complete explanation of Analog to Digital Conversion, Pulse Width Modulation, USB and Serial Protocols (I2C and SPI), Data Logging and Real Time Clocking, TCP/IP and Web Protocols and the Internet of Things I have found among a plethora of Arduino books. The illustrations are of high quality black and white and sufficient to capture wiring diagrams, schematics, oscilloscope traces program listings, data sheets and parts pictorials. As a Maker's Handbook part kits are available at a discount with the book from Element 14 allowing one to economically duplicate all of Jeremy's experiments.I highly recommend "Exploring Arduino" as much more than an introduction to this popular microcontroller. He bringhs his skills as a Maker and as an Cornell Master's Degree Electronic Engineer to the best combination of Experimental Handbook for the Arduino and a clear and easy to follow introduction to Electronic Principles.--Ira Laefsky MS Computer Engineering, MBA IT Consultant and Human Computer Interaction Researcherformerly on the Senior Consulting Staff of Arthur D. Little, Inc and Digital Equipment Corporation

I somehow ended up with both the paper version and the kindle version. I like them both but the Kindle version has the diagrams in color which is a huge win for me when trying to figure out the breadboard layouts. In the b&w of the book the greys are too hard to distinguish, but in the color version on kindle its much easier to trace the jumpers and read the resistors.Really good book to go beyond basics with your arduino.

I'm about halfway through this book. Thus far, it is much more in depth than previous Arduino books but this isn't merely focused on the Arduino. This book is a great balance between electronics fundamentals and using the Arduino as a platform to re-affirm them. Thus far I've learned about using Kirchhoff's voltage law to calculate the appropriate size for resisters when building my circuits, how to read from both digital and analog sensors, how to build a voltage divider for those sensors, how to use a transistor to deliver higher power to a motor, and much more. Using his tips, my daughter and I were able to build a temperature sensor that lit led indicators and triggered a fan when the temperature was too high. We also built a mini alarm that activated a piezo alarm and lights when the motion sensor was triggered. My daughter and I are having a ball! Thus far I have found it useful to read the chapter and then watch some of the complementary videos he points to at the beginning of the chapter. Thus far, all of those videos can be located on his YouTube account as well. Overall, very good book for those rusty on basic electronics and wanting to use the Arduino to demonstrate those concepts..

Straight forward information that is clear and concise. The book is well organized and the author does not assume the reader has any experience beyond reading the first book in this series: “Understanding DSLR Cameras. Like a top shelf text book, the author presents an overview, then specifics, followed by a review of key points. Moreover, Al Judge shares his years of expertise and wisdom from behind the lense to help the beginner make appropriate equipment purchases for his or her needs.Beyond being an excellent source of information, Al Judge will take it one step farther and personally respond to e-mails from his readers. I encountered a minor technical problem downloading some pdf files, and Mr. Judge not only sent alternative links but ultimately attached the pdf files to his e-mail for me. And he encouraged me to write if I had any other questions. These books are informative and the information is easily accessible, so no time is wasted on long wordy fillers—it’s as if the writer knows how excited I am to get out there and use my new camera!

A waste of money. I thought that this would be a discussion of available lenses. A suggesrion of which lenses are best to buy. It was a very superficial discussion of wide angle, standard, zoom and telephoto lenses. Information I already well knew.

This is a great book for beginners trying to wade their way through the labyrinth of lens choices on the market. It explains focal length, aperture and other features of lenses in a clear and consist manner. However I would have appreciated a deeper explanation of aperture vs. depth of field and low-light shooting, although admittedly the author states that bigger is better and explains that the reason why is outside of the scope of this book. Maybe a couple of simple images illustrating depth of field may have helped but I understand why the author did not want to go there. The author does a good job of limiting himself to only the basics of specifications of lenses without going into the specifics of creative opportunities afforded by purchasing said lenses. I'd recommend this book to beginners wanting to get an idea of what different lenses do.

Short and sweet tour of the terminology and techniques of contemporary Digital SLR camera lenses: "glass". The best part is the very helpful graphics that make it easy to understand basic lens concepts.Especially important is the "Effective Focal Length" of digital lenses, where the light sensor is smaller than the a "Full-frame" camera, and some of the image is clipped-off. I never knew about Tilt-Shift lenses, which alter the perspective when taking photos of buildings, for example. The author has 12 books on Amazon about photography, with beautiful images from Sedona, Arizona. Next on my reading list is the kindle book (also in print) âž½ Artistic Use of Shutter Speed: An Illustrated Guidebook (Finely Focused Photography Books)

A book for beginners, but has the constantly recurring error of telling people that the crop feature multiplies any lens used by the crop factor. So that if you have a 200mm lens on a small format with a 1.5 factor you have a 300mm to use. Not so, the crop factor only gives a angular Field of view equivalent to the longer lens. Laws of physics determine size of image, a 200mm telephoto gives the same size image on a full frame as it does on a cropped sensor. You only have less of it to view on the smaller format, its not magically enlarged.

Great job!!! This book is not about which lenses you should buy. This book is about understanding the designations on lenses, how the lenses work and their purposes. Al Judge has gone to the trouble of researching what lenses are available by 6 manufacturers and lists them. He does not force his opinion about lenses or their manufacturers on you but rather informs you about the facts. No, it is not a long read nor should it be and he has done a thourough and outstanding job. I highly recommend this book to any photography novice or anyone that does not completely understand how lenses work.

I understand this is intended as bite-sized chunks, but this "book" is a few pages long. It talks about a few different kinds of lenses -- you would get more (and better) information from a wikipedia artifcle on lenses than this book.

A nice, concise guide to lens basics and covered every question i had about lenses. Much easier to navigate through than a million Google searches. He does not tell you which lens to buy for certain types of photography; I believe his point is that with an understanding of lens basics and some experience you could make an educated decision yourself. Looking forward to more of his books!

As I have read and re-read this book, I find myself nodding my head and thinking... "That's right!!!" If I would have known these things years ago... not to mention in my youth... I know I would have made much better choices in men. I quote this book all the time... so much so that my single women friends tease me. I've even quoted it to my male friends... I just love this book!

Book was very helpful it was good. I thought this book would be of help to certain women who need help with their dating life. I bought this andDating Dating by Gloria Jean was very good also. It might not be for everybody but it has some tips in there for people who need a little help.

I'm not sure I agree with all the ideas in this book,( a bit old fashioned) but it is humorous reading. Women trying to figure out the dating scene and the men they are dating need tips and help, but to see it all in a humorous light is good for us,too. Women do take dating to the dramatic, disaster-feelings often while men do not tend to have this problem as badly.

I bought this book for my 22 year old single daughter. I began reading it and found it to be inspiring. It's about so much more than dating. It's also about identifying your wants and needs within all relationships. I felt an instant boost of overall confidence after reading this book.

Not crazy about this book it seems to say that women need to only cater to their men's needs I feel that relationships are about two people and both need to be catered to by their partners.

Every woman should read!! Great for teenage girls!! Any female getting out in the dating world again very important in dating success!

Good information for the young at heart. Some ideas are practical and some were a little over the top. Lets you know how men think and women shoud think the same. Also, be your own person with or without a man.

Very good.

Review

"A masterful achievement--brimming with fundamental and challenging insights about monotheism and polytheism, religious violence and exclusivity. It is a tough-minded inquiry in every sense, with the cultural semantics of theology brought to the center of historical reflection. With this work, Assmann solidifies his stature as one the premier historians of religious ideas in our generation."--Michael Fishbane, Nathan Cummings Professor of Jewish Studies, The University of Chicago"A masterful achievement-brimming with fundamental and challenging insights about monotheism and polytheism, religious violence and exclusivity. It was an interesting read but probably not for the casual reader. There seemed to be a lot of technical jargon used to explain many concepts. If you are not familiar with the terms then it becomes burdensome trying to grasp the concepts.

Very interesting, thanks!

Great studty, good service

Jan Assmann is one of the great Egyptologists of our age! The connection between Egypt and the origins of Judaism and Christianity is revealed here. Highly recommended.

This is a scholar's book parsing the relationship between religion - both polytheistic and monotheistic - and violence, obviously written under the vast shadow of 9/11. Jan Assmann is a German Egyptologist with a smile-inducing last name, but he is interested in understanding his subject rather than scoring points against religion. Neither monotheism or polytheism are inherently violent. Both, as practiced in ancient Israel, Egypt, and the Fertile Crescent, inspired violent outbursts at times. By the depth of the author's knowledge and the fairness of his judgments, this book stands above and apart many of the recent rants inspired by this subject.

This book is dry and to the point. One read through and you will have a leg up on most people, especially Bible Thumpers.

It's ironic but also appropriate that an Egyptian specialist has written a definitive defense of the revolutionary character of ancient Hebrew monotheism (contra the "evolutionary" view that monotheism is a "natural" development of polytheism, via the recognition that "all gods are one") His key claim, here and in his other books, is what he calls the "Mosaic distinction," that Mosaic monotheism divides the world into good and evil, true worship and idolatry, the one, only true God and false idols. The truth of this claim should be apparent to readers of Homer. Homer doesn't demonize either side of the Trojan war. There are no "good guys" and "bad guys" as such, just more or less flawed yet heroic warriors (as well as priests, women, children, parents, gods, etc.)The larger question is whether the Mosaic distinction fosters more religious violence than otherwise. He considers both sides without taking a definite stand. He does claim, however, that monotheism taken rightly should critique religious violence. Frankly, I found the issue of violence to be a side issue and more or less a concession to a sensational topic after 9/11.Assmann really knows the Egyptian and Near Eastern polytheistic background to Judaism, and the key differences between them. For example, in polytheistic religions, the King stood in for god and administered justice. Also, the legal system was separate from religious cultic practices. In Judaism, justice is integrated deeply into religion, with the prophets constantly denigrating sacrifice in favor of taking care of orphans and widows etc. At the same time, the Hebrew God doesn't support the institution of kingship but just the opposite.Overall, the book is full of valuable insights. I don't agree with some of his points, but his work is mostly solid and well-nigh essential for scholars writing on this period. It is also of interest for anyone who is seriously interested in monotheism (Judaism, Christianity, Islam).
