I took a 150 mile journey with my dog on the Missouri and this book was a great addition. Very interesting mile by mile history of the area.

With Glenn's book we were well prepared for our float trip of the Upper Missouri, following in the footsteps of Lewis and Clark's expedition.

Good condition.

This book is pretty, but not a very good river trip resource.

I haven't gotten into it yet so can't give an informed review. It appears to provide a lot of useful information that should be of value and also expand the enjoyment of my anticipated trip with a lot of historical and natural history details.

One of the co-authors of this book operates a river outfitting business, Upper Missouri River Guides, and thus has first hand knowledge of the Upper Missouri; the second co-author worked as a Bureau of Land Management River Manager for the Upper Missouri, and is a past president of the non-profit National Association for Interpretation.This book is the only available guide book for Montana's Upper Missouri National Wild and Scenic River, and the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument. What a delight to find a book written by a Westerner that (at least to my taste) demonstrates some realization and not just scholarliness. This book is so refreshing and celebrates what I hope are the first drops of what will become a rain of dharma blessings by non-Tibetan authors. Another author who also has some realization is psychologist Daniel P. Brown.Eh Ma Ho!The introduction, some 55 pages, is very well written and nicely demanding of our attention – instructive. The other 120 or so pages, the actual commentary by Brunnhölzl is more loosely written and while still quite rewarding, but not as succinct as the introduction, IMO.It is clear that Brunnhölzl practices what he preaches, so to speak, and his writing represents, as mentioned, some actual dharma realization on his part. How welcome!If I have any criticisms of this book, they are few. Brunnhölzl’s style of writing is very consistent, but perhaps that consistency deserves IMO a little more variation or “breathing” (like expanding and narrowing of the scope) that resuscitates the reader as we dig through his meaningful text. At least I find this true of the commentary section.And my other criticism is that the great many analogies, etc., while they liven up the texts, are a little mundane. I wish they were more poetical.Other than that, this book is a good sign of what I look for in modern Western Buddhism. Years ago, when I asked my Rinpoche when we could stop doing our practice in Tibetan and use English, his answer was that it would take time and we are waiting for Americans to enlighten themselves and write our own texts and sadhanas. Hmmm. That had not occurred to me. LOL.

Life changing book, because it changes your view of "reality." It delves into the heart sutra, and explains "emptiness". It was recommended by Pema Chodron, otherwise I never would have chosen it bc of the odd title.

Who knew the Heart Sutra would be so much fun to explore? The examples used in this book were easy to work with, like how the author talked in depth about how we misinterpret the word 'empty' and all the connotations we put on it, like 'empty wallet'. He did not dumb down this compact sutra, but rather he elevated the way I think about it. I've loaned out my copy to a friend, and am thinking of buying another for my own reference in case I don't get it back. It is well worth reading, and more than once. I am delighted to find an explanation of the Heart Sutra that is both meaty and manageable.

It's very readable, and the author appears to have read all the prior commentaries, so he sums up what has been said before, explains the issues clearly, and makes a convincing case as to why the sutra is so significant. I learned a great deal and it held my attention.

EXCELLENT read about the Heart Sutra, looking into every possible aspect of this traditional chant of the Buddhist practitioner.Nirvana is already here.

When seeing this book, one might perhaps have two mistaken ideas. One is saying: "Why another commentary on the Heart Sutra? Aren't there many already?" Another mistaken thought could be: "The books by Khenpo Karl Brunnhölzl are too technical, too difficult; this is not for me." When you open the Heart Attack Sutra book, you will find for yourself that both of these expectations are false.The author chose a masterful balance in writing this commentary. On one hand, it is lively, experiential, humorous, and full of practical instructions on how to engage the Heart Sutra as a contemplative manual: how to take the words of the sutra to one's heart on the meditation cushion and how to use the message the ancient sutra conveys in everyday life in today's world. The essence of this approach is captured in this quote from p. 142:"The Heart Sutra is not primarily about all phenomena (be they skandhas or the four noble truths) as objects, but it is always pointing back to our mind as the subject and how it deals with all these objects. How do we deal with our eyes, our ears, our nose, our tongue, and our body? How do we deal with our sense perceptions? How do we deal with our suffering? How do we deal with the causes of suffering? How do we deal with our path?"On the other hand, this is no dharma-lite booklet for bedtime reading. Khenpo Karl brings into his narrative the vast knowledge of the Prajñaparamita sutras commentarial tradition, skillfully quoting definitions, classifications, etymologies and meanings of the technical terms quoted in or associated with the sutra, accompanied by present-day examples elucidating the meaning.The author based his Heart Sutra commentary on the Indian commentaries, selected Tibetan commentaries as well as Chinese and contemporary Western commentaries and he refers to them throughout. He is also relying on his extensive study of the commentaries on both explicit and hidden meaning of Prajñaparamita as evidenced by his voluminous publications of Center of the Sunlit Sky, Gone Beyond I & II and Groundless Paths.As for the content, the book consists of the meaning commentary in the Introduction followed by the word commentary going through each passage. Khenpo Karl comments on a word or a sentence of the sutra from the technical point of view and then illustrates how this passage can be readily used for contemplation, for practice, for spiritual transformation.Finally, the book also includes an instruction on the practice of the Prajñaparamitahridaya Sadhana by Mahasiddha Darika. Even though this sadhana has been translated and commented upon elsewhere (Elaborations on Emptiness, Donald Lopez), without Khenpo Karl's clear practice instructions, it is difficult if not impossible to put this lovely visualization - which is enacting the story of the Heart Sutra, very much like a theatre play - into practice.In sum, when enjoying such balance between precision and readability, a miracle of a sort happens: while reading this book, you are drawn into the narrative as if wanting to finish it in one sitting - like a detective story with a humorous undertone - and at the same time you are being served the dharma without compromise, gems of traditional scholarship, which in other contexts would put most people to sleep. But here both approaches not only can coexist side by side, but are even enhancing each other, feeding the fire of prajña arising from such delightful reading. And so one can rightfully ask a question: Isn't the Heart Attack Sutra book an evidence of the genuine western Buddhism actually taking root, where the western approach to narration is employed without compromising on the precision of the traditional discourse? It is, for me. For that reason this is not yet another, redundant commentary, this is a unique masterpiece and is worth reading for all who aspire to be followers of the genuine tradition of the Heart Sutra.This Heart Attack Sutra is truly the attack for the ego's heart and therefore it is a delight for the heart aspiring for freedom.

I received my book yesterday. I LOVE it! I thought it would be mostly pretty pictures like the other Farrow and Ball books but this one is actually very instructional. They have a list of which white goes with each color, using neutrals and different ways to get different affects, like by painting woodwork and trim the same color as your walls. I highly recommend this book for the beginner or seasoned designer.

I bought this book as a gift for my mom (she has a lot of good ideas but struggles with confidently decorating her home and picking paint colors). As expected, the book has tons of great pictures. It seems to be providing just the info my mom needed. It basically walks the reader through a simple design strategy. Talks about architecture, how light effects color, how to figure out what your own tastes and styles are and how to apply them effectively.

Quality information about paint colors. Decorating is discussed as an aside. The title should read “Which if Our Paint Colors Should You Use in Your Home?” The only purpose of this book is to answer that question which isn’t bad it’s just not why I bought this book.

I ordered an inexpensive used copy (looked absolutely new and untouched, though), so no great monetary loss. As F&B is a paint and wallpapaer company, the text was basic wall color/covering advice, but bear in mind that this is a British publication, so all photos were of old cottages or European styled houses. As a visually inspired person, I just couldn't relate, so it’s off to Goodwill and a new owner.

I've read a variety of decorating books over the years and this is the first one that educated me well on how to perceive subtle differences between colors and train my eye to see those differences in the spaces I'm in. Great photos, clear text.

This book is full of beautiful pictures and inspirational design schemes. To me, the predomimate style is French Country, classic timeless and still modern.

This is a great book for anyone interested in home color schemes, especially if you have access to Farrow and Ball's wonderful paint and wallpaper products.

Applicable to a Red Hat or Solaris machine, perhaps.More pertinantly, the book goes into SUSE-specific abilities, with a natural emphasis on maintaining a secure system. The book is clearly directed at a sysadmin in a corporate environment, as opposed to a hobbyist with a home computer. So robustness and defending against malware are constant themes.For example, you may want to offer anonymous ftp writing to your machine. By default, this directory often ends up in /var. Which means that users could, inadvertantly or not, end up filling the partition that /var/ sits on. Bad, because /var holds a lot of system log files, amongst other items. So the book suggests putting the anonymous ftp write directory on its own partition. Some other sysadmin books totally ignore this situation.Careful attention should be paid to the last sections of the book, which discuss instrusion detection. About the Author

Max McMurdo officially started his career turning junk into treasure as a child crafting washing up liquid bottles into spaceships!  After graduating from Bournemouth University with a 2:1 in Product Design and Visualisation in 2000, Max fulfilled his boyhood dream and became a car designer in Cologne, Germany. â?? In 2003 he established his business reestore ltd with the aim to design and create a range of upcycled furniture and accessories from objects destined for landfill. By 2007, reestore had won several design awards and featured in many galleries and exhibitions. Max successfully pitched it to the BBC’s Dragons Den for investment, and left with investment from Deborah Meaden and Theo Paphitis. Reestore now has a client list that includes The Body Shop and has completed several installations for Google’s head offices globally. In 2014 the company won gold at the Chelsea Flower show with Kate Gould Gardens. Max is also a TV presenter.  After two series of George Clarke’s Amazing Spaces, Fill Your House For Free and Channel 4’s summer hit, Shed of the Year, he is now the go-to presenter for product design and repurposing. He has recently co-hosted a National Geographic Channel TV show called Machine Impossible and will be a co-presenter, with Sarah Beeney, of Mortgage Free Homes due to transmit in late 2017 on Channel 4. Max will also be co-presenting ITV's new show, £10k Holiday Homes, alongside Julia Bradbury in 2018. Brand partnerships have included brands like Frenchic Furniture Paint and Sugru and projects have included Beetlemania, where he bought a run down Beetle online and created 25 upcycled items from it, which were then sold for charity.

Upcycling Outdoors is a new DIY book from entrepreneur and style guru Max McMurdo and published by Quarto Publishing - Jacqui Small. Available in hardcover, it's very well illustrated with clear photography and step by step construction tutorials.It's a relatively short book, 144 pages, but manages to pack a lot of content inside. There are 20 complete projects included in 5 categories: planters & containers, structures, eating & entertaining, furniture, and lighting & accessories. The tutorials cover materials, construction techniques and tools. There's a fair bit of background design info on the projects as well, to allow for flexibility with available materials.The projects range from the whimsical - (outdoor hanging fairy lights in a birdcage) to the slightly odd(?) - (a bicycle frame mounted portable picnic basket). Some of them are sublime (hanging planter made from a ruined boat float), they're all very informal. If your outdoor spaces are strictly formal, there's much whimsy and humor to be found here, but not much formality.Roughly 30% of the page content is devoted to general techniques, sourcing supplies and finishing techniques. The finishing supplies and tools are accessible and easily acquired.I was impressed by the fact that most of the projects look really attractive and not like recycled items that belong in a landfill. There were, of course, some which were over the top for my taste personally (a suitcase with legs converted to a planter for example), but a surprising number are spot on (the firepit and lawn dominoes are really cool).All in all, a worthwhile philosophy and lovely design sense.Four starsDisclosure: I received an ARC at no cost from the author/publisher for review purposes.

I love finding ways to reuse items - sometimes it's a thrift store upcycle or a makeover to an item I have around the house. Reusing items doesn't have to be limited to inside your home though, you can create some wonderful outdoor items too! The book will give you some ideas for interesting outdoor upcycle projects!Each project has a bit about inspiration for the finished piece with an image of the items you will need to recreate it for yourself. You are shown a lovely finished project photo, then on the following pages are step-by-step instructions for the project with photos of each step. This is so wonderful for visual learners!Max McMurdo has many years of experience with creating upcycling projects. He is able to knowledgeably share tips on the best way to create these items and when you read the detailed instructions it makes you confident that you can recreate these for your own garden area.I love that these imaginative projects are made from recycled/upcycled materials. At first glance, the original items aren't alway eye pleasing and you may pass by them at the thrift store or the side of the road. Seeing them in a different way though opens up so many possibilities for upcycling in your outdoor garden area.I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I really enjoyed this book. The author does a great job explaining in detailed instructions how to do each project, and it's loaded with photographs. The projects are darling and some of them are ingenious (he makes a simple, nice looking barbecue out of a metal tool box, for instance). The author is clearly knowledgeable and really cares about what he's doing, and he does a great job teaching how to do the skills needed. I was looking for simpler projects that would take less time, but this is a great resource if you want to learn how to do some real building and re-building. Could be really fun as a "shop class" resource for homeschooling teens, too.

I have a weird child-like fondness for the WoT, the first volumes of which I read as a kid, and this is an interesting and well-written supplement to the series. It illuminates some of the details and logistics of the philosophy, magic system, and cultures of the WOT books in an clear, engaging way. Since RJ was involved, I think a reader can reasonably take the content here as canon, if you will.On the other hand, the book has two major weaknesses. One is that is was compiled and published mid-way through the series -- so it is far from comprehensive. There are things I was curious to look up in this book that simply aren't there, because they didn't exist in the series itself yet. (A more comprehensive encyclopedia edited by Jordan's wife is due out late in 2015, I believe.)Two, is that the art is pretty god-awful. And that's coming from someone who actually kind of *likes* the mass market paperback cover art for the series. If you think that art is bad, this is far worse. It's sort of embarrassingly poor.So in short, this is okay -- if you're a fan and you can get it cheap, I'd say go for it. Otherwise wait for the newer reference due out soon.

The Wheel of Time series is at the top of my list for fantasy literature. I found this book to be very informative, and I particularly enjoyed the age of legends section. I only wish the book had an update to reflect closure for the series. Also, I would love it if Brandon Sanderson would write a prequel novel covering the age of legends in greater depth.

I am a big fan of the WoT books. I've always been a little disappointed with the artwork the publisher produced. I was not impressed with this book's artwork either. The information within does not do much to enhance the experience for WoT readers. Even though I was disappointed, I will not tell all Wheel of Time fans to stay away. It depends on your expectations. If you love the books and want to buy up everything related to them, this will enhance your collection. The book is professional and accurate to the series. If you have not read all the books you should be aware that there could be some spoilers.This books defines a 3 star review- competent, but not impressive.To this day the best WoT art has been the fan art and the recent eBook covers.

Seriously, couldn't they have gotten someone other than Napoleon Dynamite to do the artwork for this book? I mean, isn't The Wheel of Time series one of the most popular fantasy series in the history of books? The illustrations are incredibly inaccurate and hilariously bad. Lanfear, who's supposed to be, like, the most beautiful woman ever, looks like a greasy-haired Drew Barrymore with a bad nose job. And I swear he used a photo of Keanu Reeves for the (capeless) Myrdraal. I could go on and on... Pretty much like the covers of the books (which are at least done with a bit more accomplishment), the illustrations all look like they were done by someone who never actually read any of the books. With all the amazing fantasy illustrators out there, I just don't understand.The book itself is a decent expansion on some of the historical bits from the series.

This is a great reference or companion book to Jordan's epic series. It is written well and blends to be a lot like an encyclopedia of the history for the world of these books, including past and present events, characters, maps, political evolutions of the realms, etc. A very valuable reference to the experience, such as looking up the cast of characters; listing The Forsaken or the heroes, and their biographies for example. I am very happy to have this book, especially in hardback. Having good maps alone was worth buying the book.An important warning: much like a "spoiler alert", I must say that reading this book along with (simultaneously) the beginning books of the series will certainly spoil the unfolding of the storyline. For myself, I read the first two books and had a desire to look more closely at the maps and have a nice reference to high-quality maps while reading. I acquired the reference while still in book three, and began reading the history of events and people, such as the Aes Sedai, and learned information that had not occurred yet (in my progress through the series). When a reader learns ahead of time "the whodunits" such as when people die, who kills them, who takes their place, etc. it is definitely a spoiler. I am not even halfway through the entire series, but have learned to be careful in that way. Some information I learned too early made me feel like some things were ruined for me. In that way it is less of a companion book and more of an encyclopedia. I know I will enjoy reading parts of it as I go, but will likely enjoy it more as I wish to remember and refer back.That warning is the only negative aspect I might offer. Aside from wishing some of the character portraits were more realistic (artwork) I have nothing but a positive recommendation at this time.

I have been searching for years for this book. A suggested list of books came up while I was searching for another book and I saw it there. I bought it right away. The book came yesterday as promised and it is a phenomenal amount of detailed and richly illustrated information about everything in the series. It is literally, an encyclopedia of The Wheel of Time Series by Robert Jordan. I am now reading the thirteenth and final installment in the series and I will be reading them all again. I recommend this book to anyone that loves this series.

This book has great art and detailed descriptions of many aspects of the series. The author himself and a friend created this gem before the series was complete so there are some things missing but the things it has rival other such lexicons on other series. Robert Jordan left behind a great legacy in this series and also in this side note. It details the people places and things found in the series and gives some background on things prior to the series. It is a must have for the hardcore fan or for the newbie who wants to build on the awe they get from reading this fantastic piece of art.

This book fills in a lot of what's missing in the series, including maps of Seanchen. If you love this series, get this book.
