First I'm going to start with the reason I had to take a star off my ranking, because it's a big one. Maybe so big that removing just one star is over-generous: Allen Schoen is a proponent of a belief that attempts to connect consciousness with quantum mechanics. (Deepak Chopra believes this too, and it won him an Ig Nobel Prize.) This belief has a name: quantum mysticism, and it has been strongly objected to by the overwhelming majority of physicists from Einstein onward, who have described it as, among other things, "pseudo science","quackery" and "quantum flapdoodle." Quantum mechanics is, in reality, very dense, very difficult math, describing, specifically, the processes of subatomic particles. A superficial understanding of some of the theories derived from that math, coupled with a decades-long misapplication of those theories by secular mystics, has had a corrupting influence on people who have, perhaps with the best intentions, tried to find a hard-science foundation for some otherwise squishy thinking. When it comes to physics, quantum mystics know just enough to be dangerous. Or not even that much. I suspect Dr. Schoen, as a vet, would not look kindly on a physicist setting up shop as a veterinarian and proclaiming himself qualified to act and speak with authority on, say, colic surgery. I know as a horse owner I wouldn't want a physicist, not even Einstein, to perform surgery on my horse. It is best to be mindful of the limits of one's expertise. But one does not need to believe that quantum mechanics somehow underlies the truth that our beliefs, attitudes, feelings, and states of mind have impact on ourselves and those around us, including our horses. It's too bad Dr. Schoen chose to veer into such discredited territory, because it casts a dubious shadow over the reliability of the rest of his information and opinions. I happen to agree with the authors that adopting mindfulness is probably the single best thing members of the equestrian community can do for the horses in their care. And for themselves. As a long-term practitioner of meditation and many of the mindfulness techniques the book discusses, I like that the authors have presented them in a form that specifically relates to working around horses. I would hope that other, more "mainstream" equestrians would be introduced to these ideas, which they might otherwise have dismissed or not thought to apply in the riding arena. If you're looking for a typical how-to training or horse management book, this isn't it. This book addresses issues considerably more fundamental, but in some ways more abstract, to the nature of what it means to be a conscious human interacting with a radically different, but at the same time surprisingly similar, species. The two authors speak in individual voices, and I found myself resonating most with Gordon's (a retired rider and trainer) stories and insights while finding Schoen a little braggy and pseudo-shamanistic. But I still appreciated the book's primary focus: the critical need to get your own head and heart in order before setting foot in a barn. Both writers give concrete exercises for doing so. Buddhists are frequently quoted, and most of the meditations are modifications of Buddhist practices. This will bother that segment of the population who sees Eastern thought as offensive or threatening to the status quo, while deep practitioners may object to an element of "McMindfulness" which I would agree is there. At the other end of the spectrum, those who gobble up any trendy mystical claptrap will read with indiscriminate interest. If you find yourself in the middle of those extremes, I recommend you give the suggestions in this imperfect but interesting book a try. Take what's useful, but don't drink the Kool-Aid. Mindfulness has demonstrated benefits; it doesn't need to be a magic cure-all and there's no need to attach any crystal-waving sub-atomic chicanery to it.

It's been too long since Dr. Schoen's last book and now he comes forward with a 400 page book that dwarfs all other publications on caring for horses. In our overcrowded lives, how nice to be able to sweep aside the stacks of books piled on the shelves in the barn office and reach for one source of wisdom.

This book makes you think. It makes you think about everything you do with your horse. It reminds you how riding is a conversation and how important it is to ask not tell. It reminds you to listen to what your horse is telling you because they tell you so much. Everything in this book can be applied to dogs and really to your whole world. How you treat your horse is how you want others to treat you. Not to give anything away, we followed Willie through the book and the co-author spoke of the regret at the end. The point was well made although sad. An excellent book for horse people, dog people and really anybody.

I highly recommend this book for all who are involved in the horse industry including parents. The book embodies a much needed sentiment that will affect the hearts and minds of all readers in a life changing manner. Further, it provides typical scenarios, real life examples and practical application tips that are simple and easy to apply in a variety of circumstances. Encouraging mindful stewardship, love and compassion for all, the book makes a wonderful gift as well. It will be read and re-read by generations to come.

This nicely illustrated and easy to read guide is comprehensive, though you will need to be willing to expand your vocabulary considerably. I wish it had a glossary!I bought both the paper and the Kindle editions to see if reading would be better with one than the other. It's definitely better to have the paper edition because it allows you to quickly page back and forth to see illustrations (all are black and white) while reading the text. The illustrations are larger with the paper edition, as well, and the book is lightweight so not difficult to carry with you on the commuter train. Last but not least, you can pass your paper edition on to another reader, impossible with the Kindle edition unless you want to loan your Kindle to someone for a while. I've learned from my comparison that for books with many illustrations, the hard copy is the way to go.

I devoured this book within a few days--loved it. I think it gives a good introduction with details on the the topics of molecular and cellular biology. However, if you don't have a background in chemistry (specifically, molecular diagrams) , you might want to search YouTube and Google for online tutorials. The book does try to provide some understanding on that subject, but it left be a little bewildered. Fortunately for me, I found an excellent video on YouTube that covered chemical structures. I offer the URL below:[...]Overall, I think this book is an excellent resource for those who haven't studied biology since high school, which is my situation. I highly recommend this book for the novice.

I found this book to be an excellent overview on how cells function and how genetics work. Most major aspects of cells are covered from what each organelle does and how certain processes cells perform work. These include things such as cell respiration, photosynthesis, and mitosis.The other important aspect covered in this book is DNA and genetics. The explanation of what purpose DNA has and how gene traits work is very good and easily understandable.Although this book is intended for mostly anyone from a student of biology to the reader with a casual interest in science, I found the section on cell respiration, with its multi-step processes, to be rather confusing. However, that is my only real complaint about the book.In conclusion, I recommend this book to anyone with an interest in biology, cells, or genetics.

Really a great way to learn Molecular Biology. The writing style is excellent with enough humor to make the information fun to read. I found this book to be a replacement for a number of introductory books on this subject since it covers the subject in a thorough and informative way, better than most others. Would recommend it highly to those interested in the subject.

I am a pre-pharmacy student. I've downloaded this book as well as the basic Biology for Dummies, and Biochemistry for Dummies. I find for my General College Bio class, I read this book the most and get the best info from it. As supplementary reading to my text book, I find this explains topics for more understanding and its not a dry as my textbook can be.I think all the Dummies books are great for extra reading, and I am sure I'll be buying more for Chemistry and other classes as well.

I picked up this book simply because I wanted a general "primer" on the subject of Molecular and Cell Biology prior to digging into other materials. It has served that purpose well. I feel as though I have a general grasp of many new concepts. I must admit that I did find it necessary to re-read many chapters to truly grasp the material sufficiently. Occasionally new vocabulary and terms were used in a chapter but not explained until one or two chapters later. Also, not all referenced images were helpful. Overall though, a great 'starter' book.

I bought this book to help me study for a test so that I could get into LPN school. I had to either take a biology class or challenge out of it by passing a test before I could even start nursing school. I chose to try to challenge out of the class so that I could start nursing school earlier. There is no way I would have passed the test without this book! I have been out of school for over 15 years and had to learn biology all over again. With the help of this book and a lot of prayer I passed the test and get to go straight into nursing classes this fall! I plan to buy more of these "Dummies" books to help me with my nursing classes!

This book is an excellent introduction to the subject of molecular and cell biology. Like all "for Dummies" books, it is written for the person who has little or no background in the subject, and is slightly whimsical and presented in language I could understand. I recently read a couple of other books that talked about how genes play an important part in driving our behavior and I wanted to check it out. I wanted to understand just what DNA is and why it is important and how it fits together with molecules, cells, genes and chromosomes. This book did the job.

{My thoughts} – Winifred {Fred} isn’t like your ordinary twelve year-old. She has a mom that has been arrested and is being held in jail because her boss said she had stolen some pills from work. Her mom says that it was a big mistake and that she didn’t do anything. In the meantime she has been placed within the foster system and is currently staying with a new foster named Margery.Margery isn’t like your typical foster. She rides a motorcycle, collects junk and turns it into stuff and has a heart of gold. She lives next door to a crazy neighbor that has a dog named Toby that he completely ignores and treats like crap. When anyone pays attention to the dog he threatens them.Fred makes a friends with a girl at school and they get close. They start sharing things about their personal life with one another. Then one day the neighbor gets hurt and the girls are the one’s that hear him and call 9-1-1. Once he goes off to the hospital they take the dog back to Margery’s with them and start training the dog to have some people manners.A lot of other fun and not so fun stuff happens within this book. The thing is the book helps to show children that even though they are in the foster system that it is okay to be happy. It shows them that it is okay to find good in a bad situation. It shows them that it is okay to want whats right for them in their eyes. It shows them that even though they are strays within the system that they aren’t entirely alone.I really enjoyed reading this book and I look forward to reading more books by this author in the very near future.

We just started reading tonight. My daughter 9 and Niece 11 fell asleep and I kept reading, I couldn't stop!! We did purchase from the school book fair. Tomorrow we will start again from the beginning. When the description of the poor dog next door, my daughter was very sad, asked if this is a true story. I tried to explain we have to keep reading. I made it to page 30, so will have to update my review then. I am very appreciative of the detail about how things were so tough for Fred with her mother and even more appreciative for Fred's optimistic support to her Mother because this is a daily lesson I am working with my daughter. And I do not feel she really hears me well enough on all of the reasons we have to be thankful. So far A+ for the book and we are going to read again in the morning!!! Thank you Cecilia Galante!!!

Gauging my 11 yr old daughter’s book reading preferences is tough. I decided to buy this book for her on a whim because of the girl and the dog in the front. GREAT concept.... but after a couple of years of it sitting on my shelf, I finally picked up this book when a really hard season of life hit. Mark Batterson details out numerous stories of God answering circled prayers... which is great. But the reality of this broken world is that we don't always see circled prayers answered... at least not how we wanted.PLEASE PLEASE read John Eldredge's "Moving Mountains" after you've read this. The Circle Maker (to me) was like a plate full of sweet cake, but it left me craving steak. Within 10 pages of reading "Moving Mountains", I was in tears. It's great to be encouraged by others' testimonies, but we also need to understand the deeper workings of prayer - AND how to handle our hearts when our prayers aren't answered the way we hoped.

I first read this book four years ago and it has helped shape my prayer life ever since. First, Batterson is great about emphasizing how God is not a genie and our wish is not His command, but rather it's about finding out and praying the will of God for my life. Great insight into many areas of life are found in this book. I have found myself reading this at the beginning of each year as a way to reset my focus and prayers, and also looking back on the ones God has answered! I highly recommend this and often buy extras to give to people.

This book is a new twist on the prosperity gospel at best. There is no Biblical foundation for his "new way of praying". There is no mention of circles in the Bible for prayer. It is more subtle. This author uses scripture out of context and stories out of context. The origin of chalk circles is well steeped in witchcraft and sorcery which Rodney Gypsy Smith knew very well. Circles drawn, often three clockwiseare patterns are used to conjure up spirits and demons. Honi was indeed a real man, revered by the same Jewish leaders who hated Jesus. He was hunted as a sorcerer and a practitioner of dark magik.This book is not a book I would ever recommend and intertwines witchcraft with Biblical verses. I only read it as one of the Bible study groups decided to read this. Yes, they are aware of my thoughts on this book as a book for spiritual guidance. Remember how subtle the serpent was with Eve.

This book changed my prayers forever and my life. I've been praying to Jesus since I was 4. Lots to learn from this book but the one thing that still stays with me years later is simply this: Think about who you are praying to: Almighty God. This means all of those years of "please help" prayers were less than what God should be asked and those kinds of prayers diminish His Glory. The "circle" seems to have been Pastor Mark's signature from God, may not be the same for all of us. If we are watching closely we may see our own signature from God.Almighty God should not be asked to "help" some situation, which to me does not give God His due respect. Almighty God should be asked to do thoroughly what we all know and believe God can do: which is anything since He owns the Universe. Asking God to do less than He is capable of seems to me to be an insult. God can and will say no if His plan and Glory are not being increased. Asking for the best outcome shows our Faith, let God decide His answer and we will accept it, but never fail to ask.Jesus even asked for the cup (crucifixion) to be taken from Him, and yet He knew that cup was why He was here in the first place, but He still asked because He knew the Father heard Him and could have done anything to save Him from that cup, to me that prayer in the garden is really how Jesus taught us to pray. Ask for what you want/need: after all, thanks to Jesus we have been given the grace to talk to the Creator of the Universe, it's an immense privilege, let's not forget who we are praying to and this book brings that home.This book increased my Faith and I've never prayed the way I used to before reading it. Highly recommended, read it more than once.

First of all, I love prayer. It seems that Mark Batterson's books just appeared in my inbox. I ordered them immediately and then ordered again for my Bible study gals, but also ordered the Prayer Journal. As I was reading the books, it hit me like lightning, that these books were a follow-up to the movie War Room. I thought, "Of course! God wants to teach me about prayer." These are the very books I needed to set a fire in my soul. I am not saying the Bible doesn't set a fire in me. What I am saying is that they came at a perfect time in my life, because before I saw War Room, my Bible study group had studied the Armor of God by Priscilla Shirer, and Priscilla is all about prayer. This whole year has been an emphasis on prayer. Actually, our church is praying for revival in the church, beginning with each of us. What Mark Batterson calls "dreams" can be anything we want or need to pray about. It is especially about kingdom building--praying through and praising through--until God gives us the spiritual desires of our heart, including the places we worship, people getting involved in the work of ministry, and ministry of all kinds. I highly recommend these books to any who want a refreshing perspective on prayer and trusting God to provide. They are very readable and my new favorites. I am so glad I ordered Batterson's books, including the Prayer Journal, which I truly consider an indespensible tool.
