Why hasn't anybody mentioned that this cookbook has no pictures? Sorry, but no matter how great the recipes, I just cannot get behind a cookbook that doesn't include photos, especially when it's about an unfamiliar cuisine.

We love Thai food, absolutely adore it. It's one of our weaknesses when it comes to eating out. 90% of the time, we are going to eat Thai. We also cook Thai quite a bit and have for almost 20 years, and we own several good Thai cookbooks. Being addicted to good Thai, I had to give the Kindle ebook version of this cookbook a try. Surprisingly, it's very well-formatted for a Kindle cookbook and very easy to read. (I say surprisingly, as I've deleted several Kindle cookbooks as unusable simply due to their format. It's a rather common problem.) The Better Than Takeout Thai Cookbook has colors that work well, the font size and contrast on the colored blocks is also good. The pictures are crisp and hunger-inducing. I'm not sure why another reviewer only saw one letter per line, as my copy displayed correctly, at full-page width; that said, I was using this on a Kindle Fire tablet. They may have been using a true Kindle ereader.After reading the entire introduction, ingredient and tool explanations, and over half of the recipes, I was more than sold and jumped on Amazon to buy a print copy also (mostly because I can't seem to print from my tablet, and I prefer to read and mark off printed copies when I'm cooking. I think my Kindle Fire is just too old or I'm too old-school.)I absolutely adore this cookbook already. While I have some excellent Thai cookbooks with good ingredient, kitchen tools, and recipe tip sections, this one is probably the very best. Each seasoning is discussed: what it is, how to store it, how to substitute for it (or when not to substitute, but leave out altogether), etc. I've learned a few new things already, such as not to substitute ginger for galangal/kha. While I normally use galangal and usually keep some frozen, I don't always have it and didn’t consider that ginger would change a dish too much. The tips are repeated on recipes where they're needed, so no worries on missing important information.The ingredient and tool info feels as if every hint from every Thai cookbook that I have plus that from chats with restaurant owners is all put together in one easy reference. There's such useful info as changing the ratio of ingredients (as some restaurants allow) changes the balance of textures and flavors away from the Thai origin dish. That seems common sense, and yet it isn't (or wasn't for me, anyway; I had to be pointed down the straight and narrow by a restaurant owner). There's info on various ways to rinse rice, what to substitute for coriander root, fish sauce, kaffir lime leaves, etc. This info is incredibly useful for us cooks who can't consistently get all the ingredients.The recipes themselves seem very complete, the ingredients are along the lines of those I know from our local Thai restaurants and recipes I have already and use on a regular basis. I am always drawn to recipes that are similar to what restaurants make because that is what we are used to and expect from Thai food. Rather unoriginally, I guess, I am always trying to get recipes to match our favorite dishes from our favorite restaurants. I sometimes have to modify more authentic recipes, such as that from Thai regional cookbooks , so they'll taste more like that from Thai restaurants, yet I don’t want them more Americanized than from my local Thai eateries.I'm looking forward to using this cookbook and its hard-copy version to recreate our favorite Thai dishes. I expect to add nuances to our current repertoire, add new dishes, and add some of our favorite dishes that we didn't have recipes for yet. If my judgement from reading this cookbook is accurate, we're going to be some very happy cooks. I will update this review if this doesn't hold true, and I might update it if it does. But don't hold your breath if this cookbook is as good as I believe it is, because I’ll be in the kitchen cooking.

I preordered this cookbook and received it early this morning. I was able to see that there isn't anything wrong the formatting with my versions. It looked great on my kindle fire HD, kindle for iOS on the iPhone as well as iPad.I prepared the spicy drunken noodles for lunch today. It was really tasty--I'm thankful that there's an Asian market nearby that carries the holy basil. It opted for substitutes; you will also find those little helpful tips and more if you go through the book. Holy basil is peppery and this make the dish. This book is a bargain, considering the recipes available. I was excited to find a jungle curry recipe. It's not your typical Thai curry served at restaurants around the U.S.So this book is broken up in sections. You have:1-The Thai Kitchen. Explains ingredient used in Thai cooking and suggests what to stock for a Thai pantry. There's also a basic tools section, optional tools and Thai cooking techniques.2-Snacks and Starters3-Rice and Noodles4-Soups and Salads5-Curries (I love this chapter---it has curry paste recipes AND curry dishes)6-Vegtables and Tofu7-Seafood8-Chicken and Eggs9-Beef and Pork10-Drinks and Desserts11-Sauces and CondimentsOverall, for the price, it's an awesome buy. I say that because of the amount of recipes you get for such a low price. We cook a lot at my home, in particular, Asian foods. This has a little something for everyone. I plan on making the Panang Peanut Curry for dinner. The recipes aren't overwhelming. I made the sweet chili sauce this afternoon too. My child loves the Thai sweet chili sauces you get at Thai restaurants. It's a good dipping sauce for tons of things. Like chicken nuggets (amongst others!). There are a couple of drink recipes too. The Thai Iced Tea was and still is delicious. I normally never ever review things, this is my first. I felt like I had to review because I feel that a cookbook review should reflect the contents of the book that actually have been made. It's a keeper!

Given 'Takeout' in the title, I was really surprised at how authentically Thai the food resulting from these recipes was. I own a couple of other Thai cookbooks that I bought when I was in Thailand, but I actually like this one better--each of use, instructions, and the fact that there are so many good accompaniments recipes: sauces, salads, etc. The other cookbooks I have are a little short on those. My only problem with the Kindle version was I don't like having my tablet or phone next to the stove. I am afraid I am going to have to break down and buy the paper version, but I think it may be worth it.

The recipes are interesting and we have enjoyed each one that we've tried. However, the recipes themselves are very poorly written. It's very annoying to gather one's mise en place only to find that the procedure calls for an ingredient that is not listed in the ingredients. Also, some of the ingredients are very disproportionate. A little experimentation and the ingredients can be adjusted into better balance.

Provides a wide selection of recipes, many unique to this book. Recognizes when ingredients are ok and when you really need the true Thai ingredient to preserve the integrity of the dish.

Kindle edition was free with Amazon Prime. I liked it so much, I bought a print copy. A lot of entertainment for only $13.62. I bought a “kit” of fresh Thai chilies, lemon grass, kaffir leaves and galangal from Amazon.com and started by making the Thai Chicken Broth. It was a natural progression into soups and other familiar take-out favorites. This is authentic Thai food and I am grateful for this thoughtful introduction of how to make it myself.

I love this book. I could not put it down. I loved that it was in available in kindle form as I could read it with my Narc husband in the room and in the car and it just looked like my nose was just in another book. Meanwhile, i was validated and empowered by this book in a million ways and i found this book at the exact right time that i am planning my escape for healing and safety. At the exact right time, i will ask my teenage girls to read this book, not only to better understand their fathers behavior but to actually educate them on what is a normal relationship, to listen to their instincts, and set boundries for friends and boyfriends and be aware of manipulation-ships. I get the feeling as an abuse survivor (my father and my husband) that i've modeled what NOT to do and this will help me communicate to them the difference. To the author, Dana: Bravo and Thank you. So well done.

I'm only about 30% done with this book, but my Kindle version is already HIGHLY highlighted yellow already! I sure wish I had this book way back in high school. The book is not only relative for people who have come out of abusive relationships, but also for teenagers learning about friendships and romantic partners. I will never understand why so much time is spent in school, making us memorize historical dates and other information that we really don't need to lead an emotionally healthy life. And no time is spent teaching us about healthy and unhealthy relationships. So much behavior that I've accepted from people who I thought were my friends were actually abusive and toxic. I just had no idea! I hope with all the knowledge that Dana has downloaded into my brain (I watch her YouTube videos each week too), I will be able to teach my children what healthy relationships look like. Dana has taught me about having boundaries and relationship deal-breakers. I never ever had these in the past and this made me a prime candidate for an emotionally and psychologically abusive relationship. I now realize I can keep myself safe from abusive and toxic people in the future and I have the power to keep bad people out of my life. I can walk away. It's empowering to now know what unhealthy looks like!

Great subject and presented in a thoughtful way, but the number of flat out editing oversights is dizzying! Please before publishing a second edition, have a professional proof reader go over the entire text. The message can be lost in the errors.

Dana is authentic. She helped me navigate through the FOG back in March 2017 when I finally figured out what had been done to my mind by an abusive demon. (I disagree with the author here. She calls these demons, humans. To me, they are still demons in human form.)I will always be thankful to Dana. She has my support unconditionally as she has been part of my own personal freedom from pain and abuse.

Sue Black, DBE, FRSE, was the longtime director of the Centre for Anatomy and Human Identification, the Leverhulme Research Centre for Forensic Science at the University of Dundee and is now pro-vice chancellor at Lancaster University. Her forensic expertise has been crucial to solving high-profile criminal cases. In 1999, she was the lead anthropologist for the British Forensics Team's work in the war crimes investigations in Kosovo and she worked in Thailand after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami. She makes regular appearances on radio and television. She divides her time between Aberdeen and Lancaster.

Absolutely absorbing! You must read this book. Fascinating account of death by someone with enormous experience in this field. I don’t wish to repeat the previous review, but I totally agree. The author has the ability to avoid too much technical detail, has a great sense of humour and makes an often awkward subject approachable and personal. You will not be disappointed.

I admire Dr. Black and her work very much and her book was an extremely interesting read!

Great book

A fascinating book about a subject that is often frightening or disturbing, but is inevitable, death. The author is as much an expert on the subject as anyone living can claim to be, a professor of anatomy and forensic anthropology, as well as passing on her considerable knowledge to her students, she has also worked with the police to help identify remains, and even travelled to the sites of international disasters and warzones to aid in the massive task of identifying victims.While never stinting on the scientific aspects of her work, such as how the body changes after death, and how even partial remains can be used for identification, she is not afraid to bring a more personal and human tone, talking about her first experiences with a dead family member, and most movingly about the deaths of her parents. This personal aspect added another dimension to the book , giving a real human interest aspect as we learn about what motivated the author to take up her profession, and why she has such a passion for its continuing place in the education of future doctors and scientists.One of the most fascinating things discussed in the book was what happens when somebody donates their body to science, something few of us really consider. The care and respect that goes into the process as a whole as well as the science behind it made for some very interesting reading..I would highly recommend this book for anyone with an interest in science or forensics , its a fascinating and compelling book, both intense and entertaining,I read a review copy courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher, all opinions are entirely my own

Sue Black, professor Anatomy and Forensic Anthropology, has written an accessible book on death, primarily violent death. It is well-written in a manor to not be off-putting to most readers. It’s as if she’s sitting with a small group of people and is having a chat with us about death. She does occasionally dip into moralizing, but when you spend your life dealing with with what she does on a daily basis, perhaps she’s entitled to moralize a bit. It may surprise some that she talks about death as a woman and uses the feminine pronouns to do so – think in terms of the film “All That Jazz” where the main character (played by Roy Schneider and based on Bob Fosse) talks about Death (played by Jessica Lange) as a beautiful blond woman with whom he flirts.All in all a very interesting book first published in 2018 and now being reissued.

The Last Decade Of Elegance: Everyday Fashions Of The Thirties: As Pictured In Sears Catalogs This book depicts the clothes of everyday people as opposed to high fashion. But it gives you some idea of the elegance of the fashion world in those days, Coco Chanel vs Elsa Shaparelli, etc and so forth. The middle-aged women of the 1930's were the debutantes of 1915 during the First World War when ladies' fashion began to suffer its greatest change in all of history --- the transformation of the long dress into baring the knee and the lower leg to all the world. They yearned for the peacefulness and order of the Edwardian era and tried to recreated it in the elegance of the clothes of the 30's which were also less innocent and far more sophisticated than the fashions of 1915. Since the the 1930's even the memory of such sophistication and utter femininity has faded into the ever far distant past.by Linda Cargill, author of Key to Lawrence.

Overall, the text captured the era well in showing the everyday dress of the Average American in the 1930s. I was disappointed that there were so few illustrations of men's outfits in the book, but when I thought about it more, I don't believe it a fault of the text, but a reality of the era that there wasn't that much variety to men's fashion in the 1930s. Most amusing to me was to see that one could even buy a "hoodie" in the 30s.

Showing the clothing offered by one of the biggest retailers in the US, this is a study in clothing for the era. It is focused primarily for the women's wear but the men's wear pages are worth their weight in gold for the vintage clothing afficionado. This type of book is helpful for collectors, re-enactors, film costuming and plays. It helps get the "look" of the period right. Style in this era was found in everyday life for middle America in the way people dressed and is a stunning contrast to today's sloth and slovenly life-styles.

This wonderful compilation of clothing and accessories available at Sears in the 1930's makes me want to go back in time. The book is very well thought out. Showing the clothing year by year was a great idea. We own a 1939 Packard automobile and enjoy wearing vintage clothing when we participate in antique car tours. I bought the book to get ideas for making a dress or two that would depict the era. This book gave me more than I expected. If you're looking for clothing ideas for men or women, or if you just like reminiscing, you will enjoy "Everyday Fashions of the Thirties".

This is a great book, full of wonderful illustrations of period clothes. I'm looking for fashion details to inspire my own wardrobe and there's a treasure trove to be found in this book. Great source for costume events too.

This was a gift and she loved it.

This is the first book from this series I obtained. It is a useful reference tool not only for the major pieces of clothing but also how accessories were used and placed. (It's not always easy to figure out those crazy 30s hats!). The descriptions, being authentic to the time, are delightful as well. My only complaint, which is really more wishful thinking, is that the book could be a bit longer. However, no major clothing/accessory category was left out.

Great book... Lays out the enterprise way of building a business intelligence solution.. not just how to build dashboards and ad hoc analyses.The datasets aren't provided, but you should know how to install SQL Server Dev Edition (free) and restore an AdventureWorksDW sample database from a bak file from SQL Server Management Studio (free) if you're in this field of work.

This is the best book I have yet seen for those who already have some experience with Power BI in an enterprise setting, and seek to enhance their skills. The author uses his recipes to teach fundamental principles as well as Power BI features. The recipes in the book are well-chosen and immediately useful to the busy practitioner. Highest recommendation and congratulations to the author for his outstanding work.

To be fair, I think the book content is good. But the Kindle edition is horribly formatted, to the degree that almost unreadable (especially on Kindle Reader on Windows). Very disappointed.

For enterprise users with an intermediate background on analysis server, DAX and power bi. Not for beginners at all. Examples files are only available from chapter 6 onward. Previous chapters will require that you connect to online databases without specifying detailed means for doing so for beginners

Simply put, this is a wonderful book. I am an intermediate Power BI user, and I am basically reading it cover to cover because I don't want to miss a detail. I have found so many delightful gems within the pages. The author not only presents tactics for utilizing Power BI, but also strategy for overall product usage that will benefit my clients tremendously in the simplicity, efficiency, elegance, and relevancy of the reports and solutions that I am enabled to create. A huge thank you to the author for this great resource!

This book is packed with tips and tricks on how to establish a powerful and robust Power BI implementation in your company. The examples given are very well written and documented, making it easy to follow along. It covers the Power BI infrastructure to an extend I’ve never seen before in any book on this subject.BI professionals will appreciate the high density of information and aspiring BI professionals will get a good overview of what’s required and possible in this area.The author not only shares his outstanding expertise and experience in this field, but also provides links to countless sources where you can find further information. This book has helped me solving a current task instantly after quickly flipping through the table of content. I’m sure I will further get much value in form of useful solutions and saved time searching through the web for information.
