A must read for everyone who claims the title of "Christian."It brings sights, smells, and sounds to the countryside that got to touch Jesus. In today's U.S. Christian society, people often try to shrug off pain and make light of prayer. "It's for the best," "It will turn out great for me because I claimed this scripture," or even "I know the plans for you...plans for hope..."This book helps reveal why prayer is not a magic formula. Life is tough and painful. If it was for Jesus (our Savior, the Word, the SON of God) then what makes us think we deserve better?

This book was such a blessing for me that I purchased it for each of the members of my home Bible Studygroup. It made my reading of the gospels come alive with the dramatici stories that Timothy Jones portrayed throughout this work. I highly recommend it. It is in a very different style from anything else I have read.

Interesting. Not quite what I expected, but an interesting read. Have not finished yet.

Fantabulous book, read it!!

Yes, this book is a life-changer. As a life long Christian I have been blessed so much receiving this Jewish perspective on Jesus' prayers.

After reading "Sitting at the Feet of Rabbi Jesus by Spangler & Tverberg," I was interested in learning more about Jewish prayers and praying in the first century. I expected "Praying Like the Jew, Jesus" to dig deeper into that information, but it only gave a little, easy-to-find information on that."Praying Like the Jew, Jesus" is mainly a series of sermons (or "devotional thoughts") about God. Each chapter started with a page containing prayers from the Bible or from Jewish tradition, like prayers spoken at the passover or at a wedding. He then wrote a fictional account of a scene from Jesus' life where this prayer or blessing happened or might have happened. Sometimes he wrote a page or two about the cultural aspects of the prayer, but he generally just launched into his sermon. The devotionals/sermons were ok, but they weren't why I had wanted the book. The fictional parts didn't focus on providing cultural background information that would help the reader better understand the scene, like I had expected. I noticed some misleading, speculative, and even incorrect information in his fictional accounts. For the Passover scene, he wrote on page 82, "[Jesus]...ripped the bread into two jagged chunks...Yochanan tore off a small piece...and passed the chunk to Ya`akov." This sounds like a loaf of leavened bread, but unleavened bread (which is like a cracker) would have been used. The Passover meal started at sunset, yet the author had the sun setting ("fading sunlight," page 89) after they finished the Passover meal. For an earlier fictional scene, the author had Simon Peter thinking of how embarrassed he was to follow Jesus and maybe he'd made a mistake in following Jesus since a physical kingdom wasn't in sight. Um, Peter was the one who said, "You are the Messiah" (Mark 8:29) and told Jesus (after a confusing sermon and Jesus asked if they would leave him): "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life" (John 6:68) and so on. He was arguing about who would be first in the Kingdom up until after the Last Supper. If the author had used Judas Iscariot, at least his doubting would be consistent with the Biblical account. If you're looking for a book focusing on the historical, Jewish background information regarding prayer, this isn't really a good source. If you want a devotional book on how unpredictable God is (with repeated comments about how people who prayed in the Bible often ended up tortured and/or dead--yup, that sure encourages me to pray!), then this book might interest you.

First, let me say i enjoyed "reading" this book. The idea of "filling in the blanks" that surround Yeshua growing up and going into ministry, with Jewish culture and tradition, is nice. However, many times the author (as do many Messianic commentators, too quickly) will say that Yeshua, or the Ruach, or another Biblical character said or heard or did "such and such" when the "such & such" is really something that Judaism from the past 1000 years or 1500 years (maybe slighly more SOMETIMES)has made into a practice. We honestly DON'T KNOW if these things really were a full part of Yeshua's life when He was a child or if His mom heard these things, or if other Biblical Brethren from days past heard or said these things or did them. My family likes the rich traditions of Biblical Judaism (verses much of the more Modern Rabbinical Judaism), and my family even uses some of the modern practices that are Biblically encouraging, but to assume that the Master and others did the exact things (or heard, or felt, or said...) is NOT to be treating like fact! Sometimes these "possibilities" are treated as "likelihoods" which is somewhat appropriate, but the chain of events listed in the book are tying what we DO know for sure, with what can be classified as conjecture, forming a thought in your mind as if it were a single unified factual ride thru history all the sudden (when it isn't provable at all).As for the basic good Torah style love God & neighbor thoughts it presents, they are done well. All in all this is a good book, but i was personally looking for more of a research oriented, factually stated, background and historical finding on 1st Century prayers. This book is nice, but also has a heavy dose of conjecture. Buy it if you want a good read, but DON'T be confused between fact & lore (a temptation when also reading Modern Rabbinic lore).
