Review
“In clear language Sacks sets forth the arguments put forward by atheists, respectfully demolishing them in favor of the religious stance that he forthrightly espouses. The range and depth of his familiarity with authorities in both camps are most impressive [and] his erudite position is largely compelling . . . Essential reading because of Sacks’s splendid range of knowledge and his powerful ability to tackle tough issues.”—Publishers Weekly “A brilliant exposition of the possibility of science and religion, each in its own way, contributing to a better world.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)“Rabbis aren’t usually rock stars, but Jonathan Sacks isn’t your average rabbi. He is a one-of-a-kind spiritual leader.”—The Jewish Week “Rabbi Jonathan Sacks is one of the most engaged and engaging thinkers and commentators of our time . . . His writings are always thought-provoking and often profound, and this latest volume is no exception.”—The Times (London)"Future Tense demonstrates once again Rabbi Sacks's ability to construct a compelling forward-looking vision of Judaism from classical texts . . . that inspires many on both sides of the Atlantic." —The Forward “Rabbi Sacks argues for a Judaism that engages with the world, that emphasizes the radical Jewish belief in human freedom. It’s sorely needed.” —The Guardian

Any book written by Rabbi Lord Sachs is a miniature university education. This book is no different. Picking up on common threads and streams of wisdom, Sacks puts Jewish life and faith into the perspective of optimism.Crucially, We learn with Sacks that we must yearn for a future of great success. When we do, we take care of things today and thus improve our status.
Judaism has the ability to be both ancient and totally updated every time. That doesn't mean you have to change some of the laws (or ignore them, saying they're so old-fashioned). But sometimes also observant jews miss the point of judaism by sticking only to the rituals and customs, isolating themselves in a (virtual or not) ghetto. This book comes to counteract to both problems. It takes the time to explain "What is to be a Jew" specially in our times; what is needed for jewish continuity. And what are the problems that Jews and Israel have today, including the author's own vision for a solution.Every chapter connects with the next and it's very easy to read and understand.
I randomly found Future tense in Barnes & Noble and from the beginning it caught my attention. The next three weeks I spent reading it and love it. I had changed my stereotypical perception on Jews, Judaism and Israel in general. This is very profoundly well written and precisely delivers its message. I highly recommend Future tense to anyone who somehow lacks of qualitative information on this matter. After this piece of work, I changed my behavior in a positive mood and the part on contribution to civilization was very revealing. Would I recommend to read this book? Yes, absolutely.
If you are reading this review, you have already thought about buying it. You should, it speaks volumes about the world we are in and revisits scary concepts about how Jews are at risk for imploding and disappearing. Well written and well researched to boot. A must read.
Still not finished, however thus far I find the work well constructed and thought out. With the authors experience as a member of The House of Lords for over twenty years and being the Chief Rabbi of London, he is very qualified to comment on the future of the Jewish communities in England/Europe/ and Israel.
This book should be read and studied by anyone interested in Judaica and the Jewish religion and history. Even though it is very easy to read there is a lot of information in it.
I recommended this book to many and have past it on for others to read! R Sacks is a prolific write and I enjoy him immensely!
An excellent book.
