I'm not willing to let any thing or any person put my physical sobriety at risk; why should I put less value on my emotional sobriety? For physical sobriety, we had to give up drinking, and for emotional sobriety, we have to give up blaming others. No longer an we say,"You made me angry!" Instead, we must accept personal responsibility for our emotional state. This much responsibility may seem extreme, yet in fact it is a great freedom. Henceforth, no person or situation can upset us if we don't give them or it permission to do so. What could be a greater freedom than that? Emotional maturity is like serenity. This was a big help in getting over myself and opening the door in letting the truism of a higher power fill the void of what once was my anger. While this particular read impacted me more with everyday life in dealing with everyone (people, places, things, and events), it helped quiet me down from my high horse of always blaming others for the way I thought and felt and how I thought how I felt, to a place that definitely helped bring me along towards a way of being happy, joyous, and free.

Very good wisdom & insight about healthy relationships. He talked most about spouses but I put “others” in place of “spouse”, or “partner” because the material can work in healthy communication with anyone. It’s theme is basically about taking responsibility for your own feelings & letting others do the same but it’s also packed with more tools to use to getting along with others. Very good book. I read w friends in a book study & it produced excellent & productive discussions. I will read again & again.

Dr. Paul O's original story is one of those in the Big Book of AA. Although this book is not AA or Alanon literature, this man quotes them quite often and he gives them the credit for his and his wife's recovery. It's clear, concise and easy to understand and apply. This is for those who have the physical addiction to alcohol under control and moved to the spot where Alanon folks start out. It's fighting the emotional alcoholism, a term I had never heard before, but when I mentioned it in Alanon, the long-timers understood it well. Why should I "allow" anyone else's actions to control me? I have a choice. A quote from the book: "What if you made up your mind that from now on for the rest of your life, you alone would decide how you are going to feel?" Can I control my feelings? I'm finding I can. My son screams at me and I start to feel hurt and self-pity and I say, "Stop. Don't allow this to destroy your day." I am not going to be the victim. It's working! It has been so invigorating and exciting and I only finished Chapter 2 a few weeks ago. I look at the chapter titles ahead and some of them are: The Basics, Techniques, More Techniques, Still More, Now Simplify, and The End. I recommend this book for anyone that wants to see great improvement in their life outlook.

Changed my outlook on life. It showed me how to find the positive and acceptance in letting others be who they are without my having to react to them negatively and give away my peace.

I'm a substance abuse counselor and it has come in handy with my angrier clients, particularly with regards to 12 step work.

This is a great book. I have been in recovery for over 8 years and now find that I need a little something extra to add to my program and suffer from allowing others control my serenity.This book makes so much sense and has so much stuff in it that applies to me and that I can use and apply to my life that I am over the moon about it. When I got to Chapter 3, this book totally won me over. I have most of Chapter 3 highlighted because of how much of it applies to me and how much great information there is in it. Dr. Paul references AA and Al-Anon doctrine so, for me, that was another reason to make this purchase.

Excellent insight into the way we communicate with each other - and suggestions about how to get better at it without hurting or getting hurt.

Great Alanon book to help people rethink blame and victim mentality. The author is open, honest and refreshing about telling the struggles in his life and marriage. The most important part, in my opinion, is learning how he overcomes each challenge by taking ownership and control of his emotions ~ not giving his power away to anyone else to "make him feel angry, ______, _______, _______"!
