Love this book -- it's what I go back to every time I need a refresher on verb conjugations, BUT BEWARE: the Kindle version has a major design flaw: the book is full of very important vocabulary tables and translation examples. In fact you NEED to be able to reference these in order to do many of the exercises. But whoever converted the book text for the electronic version converted those tables as *tiny images* rather than as text. This is important because Kindle lets you increase the size of the font, HOWEVER because the vocab tables are saved as IMAGES rather than as text, ***increasing the font size doesn't change the size of the tables.*** When using the Kindle for PC app, there's absolutely no way to increase the size of the images so I need to squint and get my head close to the monitor (see the attached image; that's how small the vocab tables appear in the Kindle-for-PC app). Using the Kindle app for phone, the tables are way too small to be readable, but at least the phone app has a "zoom" function to view larger versions of images...BUT that makes you navigate the image-zoom interface and takes you completely away from the text on the rest of the page. This makes it completely unusable for quick reference...and quick reference is absolutely critical to actually doing the exercises in the book(!) In short: great book, but buy the paper copy because Kindle version makes for a really inconvenient experience.

This is EXACTLY what I was looking for. I want to relearn my high school Spanish and become fluent. I wanted a workbook that introduced topics then gave me the opportunity to translate and work problems out. Then, I could check my answers in the back of it. This is PERFECT. There is also a companion app that you can download with flashcards that help to practice the same material while you are on the go.

I love the book. Getting back to learning Spanish is made easier. Full of practice. I don't like the True/False exercises as they don't challenge me to conjugate the verbs, which is of utmost importance in learning Spanish along with a good vocabulary.

It is just what I need to study Spanish verbs on my own at home.It has excellent explanations if how and when to use the different verb tenses. I wish I had this book years ago

I'm taking Spanish for beginners and this is the text we use in class. I find this book to be easy and informative. It really smooth out the basics for me. Now I'm continuing with rosetta stone and I have a better understanding. Plus the app make it easy to learn even if you don't have the book; and it's free.

This is a great book for learning Spanish verbs. I don't learn quickly so I go back through this book year after year. What I really like is that you can download the app that goes with it and do the exercises using the app. It makes it easier to view the answers and the best thing is that if you have wifi it will read you the answer in perfect Spanish which is really important for getting your accent right. I have used this book more than any other book resource I have.

I am an intermediate Spanish student, trying to kick my Spanish up a notch. This book was extremely helpful, and I did all the exercises and my knowledge of Spanish verbs improved accordingly. I showed some of the exercises to my teacher and he was impressed. He felt that the exercises were demanding and pertinent. The exercises where they give you a whole paragraph to translate are particularly good, I feel, because they push you beyond one line sentences. I think that this practice makes perfect series is good quality and I will be buying more of their books.

Very helpful wide-ranging guide that we use to supplement our daughter's classroom education. Contains dozens and dozens of drills/work-sheets for written practice and as an aid for memorization. This is best-used as a reinforcement for visual and oral practice and concepts learned in a classroom--it's not really designed to "teach" (unless someone is extraordinarily self-directed).Only reason I haven't given it five stars is that we have found some errors/quirks in the answer key that aren't well-explained.Also, the reasons "why" certain concepts are the way they are isn't well-explained--it is just assumed that readers will memorize without question.

If it doesn't inspire you to give it a try, your soul fell out somewhere...

First I must confess to being a board war gamer (always have been, always will be) but have enjoyed looking into and admiring miniature war games.I downloaded this book this morning and then spent next too hours browsing from cover to cover.Photos are great, writing is interesting and well put together, loved the history, the games ideas and the contact info at end. Also liked the way on kindle on my iPad I could connect to the various web sites.This book strikes me as a labour of love from someone who enjoys their hobby.Worth every cent for Kindle edition (pictures come out well on iPad) and miniature war gamers would enjoy the hard copy.AndrewAustralia

For me, this is the new, modern day, de facto standard for the all-encompassing guide to the wargaming hobby. Well written, beautiful to look at, chock full of useful advice and tips, and even containing its own set of rules (several in fact), I don't forsee anyone surpassing this stellar effort from Henry Hyde anytime soon. Highly recommended for every wargamer's bookshelf.

I purchased the Kindle version after listening to Mr. Hyde's interviews and conversations via the Meeples and Miniatures site. Much of his passion for the simpler games that are played with model soldiers come out in this book. It has a very heavy focus on the "horse and musket" period of gaming but does give comprehensive overviews of many of the other periods.Mr. Hyde starts with a history of his undertaking into the hobby then moves in to descriptions of the myriad of games types and equipment that one acquires to play the games. A set of Napoleonic style of rules are included along with a sample replay so as to better illustrate what should take place.One of the positions he takes which peaked my interest was that he never found much panache in the naval wargaming sector. Grey ships on a Grey sea just doesn't garner any excitement. I would recommend this book to the beginner or the grognard type who wants a more simple type of game. This is not intended for the FOW tournament player or the Challenger Modern MBT guy.My only complaint is that the pages are not numbered in the Kindle version so that all the PDFs of the book are unavailable for download. I only wish the password was tagged to the photo description or some such. The charts in the Kindle display get cut off so you can only see the first 70-80% before it is cut off.

Wells to today, and yes, WARGAMING, he covers it, and it covers it well.It is well written and beautiful to just thumb through and look at the the pictures.If you are into any kind of wargaming, Ancients to SCIFI, Napoleonics to WWZ, this book is a great addition to your library, and I think you will find yourself coming back to it for a long time to come.Gary Strombo

Very sad never should of happened

After recently visiting Ireland for the first time and hearing some stories, seeing remains of potato rows on the hillsides, it really activated my interest in getting some facts. This book went into great detail of all the "behind the scenes" activities between governments to help resolve this famine without much financial expenditure.For those who are interested in Irish History, mid 1800's, this is a must read. A very unfortunate time for the poor and middle class Irish people.

Knew nothing about the Great Irish Potato famine. Never heard of it in the history books. Certainly doesn't paint a good picture of England at the time.

Well done, very balanced approach to a very polarizing event in the history of Ireland.

A fair and balanced book of the many layers of the Potato Famine. A must read for those interested in this most significant event in Irish history.

The book covers the 30 years during which England reduced the population of Ireland by brutal tyranny and starvation. They also took away the cultural heritage of the Irish. One result being the mass immigration to the United States as well as deliberate homicide by allowing masses with Tyfus to board ships upon which they died.

My great-grandparents died in.it, so I had a lot to learn. Last month I went back and saw the workhouse where I think they died. Even today it is hard there if protestant, but back then it was hard if you were catholic as well.

"There are things worse than communism, it turned out, and in Iraq we brought them about ourselves. I say this as someone who supported regime change."I wasn't certain, when I began Robert Kaplan's The Revenge of Geography: What the Map Tells Us About Coming Conflicts and the Battle Against Fate, just who Kaplan was or if I would have to do intellectual battle throughout this book with a point of view too contrary to my own. The above statement relieved my mind. Here, I suspected, might be someone worth listening to. Here might be someone from whom I can learn.Throughout Part I, he summarizes and expands upon a group of writers he calls Visionaries, chief among them Halford Makinder.For Makinder, Kaplan says, geography is"…an old story…Europe versus Russia: a liberal sea power—as were Athens and Venice—against a reactionary land power—as was Sparta and Prussia. For the sea, in addition to the cosmopolitan influences it bestows by virtue of access to distant harbors, provides the sort of inviolate border security necessary for liberalism and democracy to take root. (The United States is virtually an island nation …)"He makes clear that Russia, which he considered the heart of Makinder's “World Island,” has suffered since its beginning, from borders that are easily traduced, from a landmass that crosses 170 degrees of longitude (almost halfway around the globe), but lies almost entirely north of the 50th parallel (the northern border of the U.S. lies at 49 degrees north), and that historically has gone to great lengths to procure open ports for trade. The United States, on the other hand, is protected on two sides by large oceans, by treaty with a friendly power on a third, and threatened only by the demographics of population and economics on the fourth. We lie in the largest expanse of temperate zone productivity in the world, rivaled only by China. And we have two seaboards indented with year-round harbor facilities.And yet we jeered (this is my take, not necessarily Kaplan’s) for decades about Russia’s paranoia and the inability of Russian communism to make a living for its people, much less produce affluence. We have had, from the beginning, the right geography in which liberalism and democracy could take hold. Our history has, however, proven, time and again, Kaplan’s bald statement that "Democracy and morality are simply not synonymous."Part II goes deeper into the specifics of Europe, Russia, China, India, Iran, and the countries of the former Ottoman Empire.Speaking of the relatively new fundamentalism in Iran (but I would extend it to the possibilities inherent through the U.S. as well), he posits that in an increasingly urbanized world, the city, which once fostered creativity and innovation impossible back in the village, now accounts for much"intensified religious feeling. For in the village of old, religion was a natural extension of the daily traditions and routine of life among the extended family; but migrations to the city brought Muslims into the anonymity of slum existence, and to keep the family together and the young from drifting into crime, religion has had to be reinvented in starker, more ideological form.""Traveling from Saddam’s Iraq to Assad’s Syria, as I did on occasion, was like coming up for liberal humanist air." At this time, Kaplan regards Syria as having a better chance post-Assad than Iraq did post-Saddam because Syria seemed, at the time, to be a "less damaged society".Published in 2012 (2013 in paperback), Kaplan writes, with almost eerie foreshadowing, "…following Iraq and Afghanistan, the next target of Sunni jihadists could be Syria itself…"In Part III, America's Destiny, his final argument, vis a vis the U.S., is one I didn't expect. He paraphrases, and then expands favorably upon, Andrew Bacevich's "impolite observation," at a 2009 conference. "What have we achieved in the Middle East with all of our interventions since the 1980's?...Why not fix Mexico instead?""...human beings operate under constraints imposed by geography and the vast and varied phenomena that emanate from it: everything from persistent, albeit changeable, national characteristics to the location of trade routes to the life-or-death requirement for natural resources...And while the advance of electronic communications may make the world smaller, rather than negate geography, the Internet and other new media only make geography more precious, more contested, more claustrophobic.".There are no grand conclusions to The Revenge of Geography. No thrilling climax. No Walking Dead. No Sharknados. But there is a lot of food for thought for long winter evenings, and I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Mr. Kaplan is an astute and clear headed observer of reality. His notions on how geography affects attitude and how regional existence is a determinate of persons and groups far more than mere man made geo political lines on a map. He explains the essential differences in the halls of various power centers around the planet. He shows why geography may not be the only factor affecting foreign policy but the key one. If you read Guns, Germs and Steel, you may have an inkling of where this is going but Mr. Kaplan is writing about today and how geography causes nations to view the world from certain perspectives and eternal necessities. For example, Russia will always be seeking a warm water port and this requires a certain thrust from Russian leaders. Similarly, England is detached from some of the more direct influences of the European states, given the English Channel and it's island background. The only thing that Mr. Kaplan says or does that I did not agree nor enjoyed, was his attempt to bring both sides of the political polarity called America on board with his theory by first explaining his position, initially, on the Iraq War, and then claimed he changed it. His presentation is mostly conservative and he uses this word often. He attempts to gain liberal assent by first kicking a dead horse, the Iraq War. He is only correct in his observations up to the year forces were first withdrawn through misguided political acts back home. Losses were extended at a time things were restoring at last. The invasion may be controversial but his appeals to both sides to gain acceptance of his views I found to be unappealing and quite the stunt. His views are not for debate. He does not have to be smarmy towards those whose unanimity he seeks. The logic of his ideas carries the day; thus his self disparagement to make liberals like him is unnecessary. Anyone of either political perspective can only agree on this position because the facts demand it. Buy and read this book. Regardless of my annoyances with his early cloying and unnecessary genuflection, his overall thrust, by the beginning of chapter three, leads us all on an incredible journey of realization. What should have been obvious to all, that geography, if not a motivator for evil, is always a motivator of need.

As I read The Revenge of Geography I found myself wishing that it had been published a few years earlier, or that I had not retired from my job teaching high school Advanced Placement World History a couple of years ago, so that I could have used the rich material Robert D. Kaplan presents here in my classroom. That is high praise indeed, but it is no understatement to say that this book, alongside the works of Jared Diamond,Samuel Huntingdon, and a few other geographers/historians/researchers, is enormously valuable for those seeking a better understanding of our world and our future.Kaplan's greatest achievement here is his ability to explain the effects of geography on our past, present, and future. In the first of three segments, he provides the historical background to his study, tracing the work of historians and geographers from Herodotus through the twentieth century. In the second section, he analyzes the early twenty first century map,describing the ways in which gogrpahy influences the development of Europe, Russia, China, India, and the Middle East. Finally, the third section examines the fate of the United States and Mexico, two nations inevitably bound together by the map and whose futures will inevitably see us growing more intertwined.Throughout this meticulously researched work Kaplan provides "local color" through a series of fascinating anecdotes, many of them based on his own travels through the regions under discussion. These enhance what is already an impressive and scholarly account, one that I believe and hope will become essential reading for diplomats and strategists around the world.

Anna-Marie McLemore’s When the Moon Was Ours is one of the most stunning novels I’ve ever read. It’s a short novel, but I found myself pausing every few pages because McLemore’s writing was so beautiful, I needed a moment to truly appreciate it. Taking inspiration from the folklore of La Llorona, McLemore weaves a tale about a boy and girl trying to discover who they are in a world that doesn’t quite understand them. Miel’s past is a mystery, from the moment she emerged from the water tower, her past has been locked up deep inside her. Most people aren’t sure what to make of her and the roses that grow from her wrist, but she’s always found a companion in Sam, a transgender boy who’s always felt like an outsider himself. Sam is trying to understand his own gender identity while also trying to appease those around him. Though it was hard to read when people tried to take advantage of Sam and “expose” him, it was an honest display of how many believe they have more of a right to determine someone’s identity than the person themselves does. McLemore’s characters are a mix of vulnerability and strength; her story is both dark and whimsical; and her words are moving and breathtaking. It’s novels like When the Moon Was Ours that make me love the genre of magical realism even more. If you haven’t picked up Anna-Marie McLemore’s novels yet, I strongly encourage you to do so.

This book has been on my TBR for quite a while now, and there's a reason for it. There are books out there that are so hyped and with concepts so painfully up my alley that utterly utterly let me down. Sometimes friends and writers and readers whose opinions I completely trust still love those books, and I have this almost visceral confusion over what I've missed or even what they missed. Was I too critical? Did I just not understand it? Why didn't I enjoy this book I hoped to love when so many people did?I've heard nothing but good things about this book, literally not a single negative review from anyone I know (as opposed to people down in the reviews below, I mean). Add in the fact that just the dedication alone had me tearing up, and I got almost terrified of reading this book and discovering I didn't like it as much as I thought I would.But y'all. This book. THIS FREAKING BOOK. I legitimately cried from about halfway through until the end of the book. I went through half a box of tissues in sheer 'oh my HEART' tears, and once I was finished with it, I sat on my bed just holding it closed to my chest for a good ten minutes in that book hangover paralysis.It was just stunning. I don't know what else to say besides that.

Content warnings: transphobia (challenged), incidents similar to self-harm, child abuseWhen I read a particularly beautiful or arresting passage of a book, I linger on it, letting the words roll around in my mouth to savor their texture and flavor. It doesn't happen with every book; when it does, it's usually not that often and only consists of a couple of sentences. To my shock and utter delight, though, When the Moon Was Ours was filled almost entirely with these kinds of passages, consisting of whole chapters that made me slow down and marvel at their otherworldly beauty.This is the story of Miel, a Latinx girl who washed out of a water tower one day and has roses growing out of her wrist, and Samir, a Pakistani boy who hangs the moon wherever he can. The whole town believes Miel is a fearsome witch because of her roses and her emergence from the water and the fact that she lives with a curandera named Aracely who cures the lovesick people of the town. The truly fearsome witches, however, may be the Bonner girls, las gringas bonitas, who beguile the boys and men of the town and take whatever they want for themselves...including Miel's roses.Anna-Marie McLemore's prose is shimmering and poetic, creating a dreamlike narrative that showcases the beauty and wistfulness of magical realism. Glass pumpkins grow out of the ground in jewel tones. Lovesickness takes physical form, flying out of a window once it's been wrenched from the body of a spurned lover. A mysterious woman emerges fully formed from a cloud of thousands of butterflies. McLemore's lyrical style breathes life into her delicate fairy tale, showing readers the possibility that lies within each of us to become who we are truly meant to be.The idea of becoming yourself and living your truth applies to all the characters in the book, but it would be an act of erasure on my part to pull focus from the story of Samir, the transgender boy who hangs the moon. For the most part, Samir's friends and family give him the time and space he needs to understand his true feelings and true self, and we get the privilege of seeing him work through the complicated thoughts and emotions that come with being a trans teen.I'm cisgender, so please take my opinions here with every grain of salt in existence, but Samir's depiction feels insightful and authentic to me. His characterization is empathetic and lovingly crafted — in the acknowledgments and the author's note, McLemore states that her relationship with her husband, who is trans, inspired much of the story. She also says that he helped her a great deal in writing Samir by answering questions about his experiences as a trans boy; that level of care and intimacy shines through in the book, which is one of the most touching coming out stories and one of the loveliest romances I've ever read.When the Moon Was Ours is a tale that will wrap you up and whisper to you, promising heartache and pain but assuring you that it will all be worth it in the end. It will tell you that who you are inside is who you really are; it will tell you that no one else has the right to decide what to do with your name or your body or your identity. It will tell you that magic exists, that hope exists, that possibility exists. And — especially for the brilliant, shining time that you spend lost in its pages — it will be right.
