This is actually my favorite book in our children's private collection. At first I was not too thrilled with the pictures but over time they have grown on me...now they seem just perfect for the story. I noticed some reviews down the book because they feel it is too advanced for the age range suggeted; I personally disagree. In my opinion it is never too early to impart knowledge to our children. I particularly like that it involves the child in the story line so that they ASK what these things mean. I am surprised to see some (very few, yet some none the less) feel so differently about the book but I wanted to post in defense of the book because I feel it really is a true treasure. (Not that it really needed it at 4 1/2 stars...I just think it is 5 star worthy!) I also noticed one reader refer to the text as freakish. Wow! I am still trying to figure out how the text could be seen in that light!The intire book is full of text such as:On the day you were born the moon pulled on the ocean below, and, wave by wave, a rising tide washed the beaches clean for your footprints......while far out at sea clouds swelled with water drops, sailed to shore on a wind, and rained you a welcome across the Earth's green lands.I have never seen science explained in such a way for a small child and I think it was HIGH TIME!I just LOVE this book, and quite frankly, so do my 2 kids age 2 and 4!

My 3.5 year old daughter and I found this book in the doctor's office a few weeks ago. She asked me to read it, which I did...and then I immediately looked it up on Amazon for purchase. I like the message, spiritual but not religious...we really enjoy reading it together.

BEST baby book to give to new parents. Everyone cries every time. Happy tears. My daughter is 23 and I still read it to her and cry every time I read it. Make sure they do not open the book until the baby has arrived. When you read it you will understand why.

I received this book from a good friend when my baby boy was born (our first). I thought the poetry of birth and the natural world was amazing. And the ending where a circle of loved ones welcomed the new baby whispering "We're so glad you've come," reminded me of all the love our family and friends showed our new baby. I can't read it without tearing up. It's a wonderful reminder that all life is sacred and beautiful.While the art is tribal, not fluffy, and some of the language is advanced for a developing child, I still love this book. Not every board book should be pastels and one syllable words. But I hope this book will be a keepsake that we can read together and remember what a miracle it was that he was born. I want to foster in him the spirit of this book... that all life is connected and we need to try to live in balance with the environment that sustains our lives.

This was a big help in getting over myself and opening the door in letting the truism of a higher power fill the void of what once was my anger. While this particular read impacted me more with everyday life in dealing with everyone (people, places, things, and events), it helped quiet me down from my high horse of always blaming others for the way I thought and felt and how I thought how I felt, to a place that definitely helped bring me along towards a way of being happy, joyous, and free.

Very good wisdom & insight about healthy relationships. He talked most about spouses but I put “others” in place of “spouse”, or “partner” because the material can work in healthy communication with anyone. It’s theme is basically about taking responsibility for your own feelings & letting others do the same but it’s also packed with more tools to use to getting along with others. Very good book. I read w friends in a book study & it produced excellent & productive discussions. I will read again & again.

Dr. Paul O's original story is one of those in the Big Book of AA. Although this book is not AA or Alanon literature, this man quotes them quite often and he gives them the credit for his and his wife's recovery. It's clear, concise and easy to understand and apply. This is for those who have the physical addiction to alcohol under control and moved to the spot where Alanon folks start out. It's fighting the emotional alcoholism, a term I had never heard before, but when I mentioned it in Alanon, the long-timers understood it well. Why should I "allow" anyone else's actions to control me? I have a choice. A quote from the book: "What if you made up your mind that from now on for the rest of your life, you alone would decide how you are going to feel?" Can I control my feelings? I'm finding I can. My son screams at me and I start to feel hurt and self-pity and I say, "Stop. Don't allow this to destroy your day." I am not going to be the victim. It's working! It has been so invigorating and exciting and I only finished Chapter 2 a few weeks ago. I look at the chapter titles ahead and some of them are: The Basics, Techniques, More Techniques, Still More, Now Simplify, and The End. I recommend this book for anyone that wants to see great improvement in their life outlook.

Changed my outlook on life. It showed me how to find the positive and acceptance in letting others be who they are without my having to react to them negatively and give away my peace.

This is a great book. I have been in recovery for over 8 years and now find that I need a little something extra to add to my program and suffer from allowing others control my serenity.This book makes so much sense and has so much stuff in it that applies to me and that I can use and apply to my life that I am over the moon about it. When I got to Chapter 3, this book totally won me over. I have most of Chapter 3 highlighted because of how much of it applies to me and how much great information there is in it. Dr. Paul references AA and Al-Anon doctrine so, for me, that was another reason to make this purchase.

Excellent insight into the way we communicate with each other - and suggestions about how to get better at it without hurting or getting hurt.

Great Alanon book to help people rethink blame and victim mentality. The author is open, honest and refreshing about telling the struggles in his life and marriage. The most important part, in my opinion, is learning how he overcomes each challenge by taking ownership and control of his emotions ~ not giving his power away to anyone else to "make him feel angry, ______, _______, _______"!

Purchased this for my husband on his birthday - we are both internal medicine residents and he is planning on pursuing a career in critical care medicine, and this book was recommended by a colleague. It is a kitschy, fun read (never thought this was possible for something as dry as changing vent settings) - would be a great start for an intern, probably more that you would need to know. Reviews setting changes in a fun, memorable way. Even have several pulmonary ICU attendings who often quote this book whom I thought were just being goofy on rounds - you'll definitely be in the "know" if this is your niche/are a medicine resident trying to master the basics of vents - and beyond!

A freind going into Crit Care recommended this after I said I’d have to manage an open ICU next yr as a hospitalist. My program only lets fellows and attendings touch the vents and doesn’t do all that much vent teaching.I read this over three times in 2 weeks (short read) and can now explain vents to my co-residents. While you obviously still need the hands on, this book will give you all the tools you need to manage the vast majority of vent cases. It’s explained as simply as I can imagine, and really takes the mystery out of vents making you think “ Eh, vents aren’t that difficult.” Highly recommended for anyone who needs to know how to manage vents.

I am a PGY3 Internal Medicine resident. Through my residency so far I had been reading about ventilator management from so many different source that all the information gets mangled. You are reading the same stuff from different books and thus you fail to develop a mental picture. It is always good to have a single basic source. This is an excellent book for anyone wanting to know the basics and more for ventilator management. I am reading it on my Note 3 which has a big enough screen size to read books. I am reading it on the go when I have time. It is short enough and the language is simple enough for it to be read and applied quickly. It gives just the required bit of knowledge to apply to your patients which is I think all you need. Not extensive but all a resident would need and also if you are planning for a career as a Hospitalist who would have to do Vent Management.Read this one or twice and that should set you up.I would recommend this for Residents and Hospitalists and possibly critical care fellows as a great starter book.

I bought the use version of this, and it is just as good as a new one.I really like the material and how this book is laid out. I am a CCT medic, and have found this book helpful.As for the blank pages as some have said, you are getting all the pages, but when a chapter end, they start the next chapter on an entire new sheet, not the backside of the previous, so you are not actually missing any materail as someone said.I recommend this book.

I purchased this at the recommendation of Scott Weingart from Emcrit, but while reading it in my office, several other providers have commented on how it's a classic of basic ventilator mastery. I had a fair understanding of how to manage vents before reading this, but this explained things in a much better way than I'd learned before and is a very practical guide to understanding and managing vents. Would highly recommend for interns/residents, APPs in the ICU and hospitalists who occasionally have to manage vents.

Good book and information except that my copy is missing a few pages. Some pages printed blank and cut off the previous sentences or paragraphs. If I had the full book like what I paid for and not this copy with missprinted pages it would be 5 stars.

A lot of text books and material on mechanical ventilation are a waste of time and don't emphasize quick practical things needed in the ICU. The ventilator book is excellent! It has helped me manage my ICU patients on ventilator with confidence. I am very grateful to William Owens, the author of this book. I wish more physicians will think like him and write more practically applicable book.

If you need a great intro to ventilators, this book is a good choice. Concise, easy to read, with good information. I would recommend it to any medical student/intern who would like to get a good grasp on the basics. Can easily read through in an hour or two (casually reading).

Two factors make Juror # 3 a far faster read than would be expected with a novel of 350-plus pages. One, the story is a fast-moving work of dialogue, told to us in first person. Two, less time is spent on fleshing out the characters. Both factors make this a fun, quick, easy read. Still, dependence on stereotypes to reduce time spent developing characters results in a tale that is more forgettable. It just doesn’t etch itself into my soul the way some great writers do.Although James Patterson is the lead author, I suspect co-author Nancy Allen had much more to do with the body of this story. At least, the voice that comes through sounds very unlike Patterson to my ears. My observation is not meant as criticism. In fact, it is a tribute to the fine writing of Allen. What I mean is that, unlike several of Patterson’s recent works, the writing here is much more evenly balanced and enticing.Initially, I thought of some works by John Grisham. I was concerned that Patterson might be trying to hone in on Grisham and, possibly, would be producing an inferior tale to ride on his coattails. But, as it turns out, Nancy Allen is a fine writer in her own right. Now that I’ve read one of her tales, I shall not hesitate to consider her next tale, with or without Patterson.POV: First person. Does not meet the expectation I have for previous works from this author. It’s lacking in sophistication from dialogue to plot. Usually, I keep hardcovers to share with friends and family who are avid readers. I’ll be donating this one ( I respect books too much to toss). It reads like a basic novel for beginners. If I was an educator, it would be a good example of how to loose your reader- it’s just boring. It lacks depth or intricacy, very disappointing on many levels.

I can’t believe I actually bought it! But I was desperate to read, and the snippet was a tad intriguing. But true to form, JP just throws his name on some other authors book and sells out. Dull, boring, poorly written, little intrigue. All around, just sad.

What I like most about this book is that although there are plot twists, nothing "comes out of left field". The protagonist is a wrong side of the tracks girl who sets and achieves her goals. She doesn't let others intimidate her and she accomplishes what she sets out to do.....admirably.

Easy read. The early pages suggest a terrific thriller ahead - but that promise is never kept. The book is a poor attempt to create a Grisham. It fails. Its lead character, a new lawyer, is ill-defined, poorly described, and not credible. Save your money.

I am grateful for the outstanding talents of James Patterson and now wish to express my appreciation for this introduction to another gifted writer … Nancy Allen ! I was engrossed in this book throughout and enjoyed that I could still find myself laughing out loud at times with rich characters and real expressions of feelings.I will definitely be looking forward to more Nancy Allen !

JP advertised that his book was John Grisham but better. True it was set in Mississippi but I know JG’s books and this was no JG. Two short stories, with a interesting heroine but little else.

Not what I’d expect from Patterson but he seems to beriding on his past successes and selling his “name”to co-authors. This one didn’t do him justice and I’ll avoid future books with this co-author. In fact, I’ll be more selective ofPatterson books in the future.What happened to my once favorite author??

I had to resist offering a one-star, “repugnant” review.Tamler Sommers offers up a compelling defense of honor. I was struck most by the humility of such a controversial project. Sommers appears with pockets turned out and no strict definition of honor to give. However, he knows honor when he sees it and provides many examples thereof. He openly acknowledges its many downsides, tempers our expectations on its upsides, and presents how we may utilize it within the chaos of reality.All told, he does this very well. The examples are drawn from literature, film, history, myth, and his own life work to persuade the reader of honor's day-to-day value. I found my opinions challenged frequently during the course of the book. In addition, I learned a lot about the sociology and anthropology of honor cultures. Above all, I found the book to be an easy read and very entertaining throughout.On the other hand, I did not find myself persuaded that honor is, on balance, a force for good. The intuition I walked away with is that honor, vengeance, etc. just do not seem to scale. The best examples of honor Sommers offers are often in microcosms: sports teams, personal vengeance, and so on. The final chapters of the book, relating to restorative justice and containment of violence in larger honor cultures, work to show how values of honor could scale-out. I have no objections to the technical details he outlines, but just didn't put the book down feeling like these methods could fully overcome the obstacles that honor brings with it.

Tamler Sommers does a superb job of explaining the importance of honor cultures and outlining the values of maintaining them, whilst also giving a clear and precise criticism of the flaws and faults of honor. Why Honor Matters touches upon every aspect of honor that is widely understandable, from the traditions of sports values, to the brutal honor killings in extremist-religious societies. It must be stressed that Sommers does not in anyway defend atrocities, nor does he in anyway promote the abhorrently immoral acts of violence towards individuals or animals, but rather he emphasizes the values of what it means to stand up for and respect oneself, and to maintain a sense of respect towards the morals of the culture within ethically acceptable reason. One of Sommers' most difficult endeavors is perhaps the attempt to bring the idea of honor out of this barbaric and brutally-tribal stereotype. Sommers carefully suggests that honor can exist within culture and be a morally good and strong influence on the society, without the need for obscene acts of immorality. It is honorable, just and respectful to defend oneself, one's loved ones and one's moral standing, within reason. But it is not honorable, disrespectful to oneself and indeed morally wrong to subject another to violent immoral acts of injustice and outrage.Perhaps the most crippling issue of the book is the misunderstanding of what the author is trying to push. It is quick and easy to immediately jump to conclusions upon reading just a few excerpts here and there, but that would be discrediting the work any philosopher or author has done to study an ethical ideology. It is important to note that I quite frankly, do not agree with all of Sommers' views on honor, but to say that the author is misinformed or perhaps encouraging violence is just plain wrong. Why Honor Matters does a clear and thorough job of explaining nearly every accessible trait of what the modern world perceives as honor as well as emphasizing the importance of the good values that honor promotes, while asserting that the unethical acts of certain honor cultures must be stripped away and destroyed. All in all, while I restate that I don't agree on every point Sommers makes, this book was a delight, funny, accessible and eye-opening to read; while the idea of honor appears to be outdated, Tamler Sommers has successfully revitalized the subject with all its baggage and has given the topic a fair and critical assessment.

I’m not a fan of honor cultures. To be frank, I find most of them repugnant. And yet, I found Sommers’ latest book to be well researched, well reasoned and well written. He makes the case for honor without overstating his case or ignoring inconvenient truths. He explains his position clearly and without unnecessary technical jargon, without dumbing down. Sommers gave me a lot to think about, and I am very glad I read his book.

I'm a decent ways into the book now. It's written well enough and clearly enough to be very readable. I like Tamler's take on honor, I like the ideas he brings that really are counter-intuative. The examples he uses do a really wonderful job of illustrating the points he's trying to make, while understanding and acknowledging the limits. I'll admit that I'm reading as a fan of VBW, but this book is honestly just as good, if not better than stuff by Pinker, Bloom, Haidt, etc. I'll be recommending it to friends just as soon as I finish it up.

I can honestly say I never thought I would be taking honor culture seriously. I didn’t think there were any upsides. But if we can harvest the benefits of implementing an honor structure, while taking advantage of the moral progress that’s been made to determine the content of that honor structure, I actually agree with the author that honor would probably solve a host of seemingly intractable problems. “Containment” is the biggest issue, in my mind. I’m still trying to convince my wife, but I had my mind changed because of this book. I don’t mean to keep repeating myself, it’s just weird to me that I’m now thinking about honor as a serious moral paradigm for the modern, western world.

Tamler is the rare philosopher who can write in a clear, accessible way without sacrificing depth or rigor. This book is a true pleasure to read, and raises significant challenges to the common sense Western liberal approach to a number of issues, most importantly criminal justice.
