I chose the Kindle edition for the simple reason of the ease to explore specifics in parallel and seamlessly with more detailed internet materials.A deep diving history reader will know immediately that the calamity of the late 14th century has no modern parallel or point of modern reference. It was the worst century in recorded human history. A few highlights include a 30-50% Black Death mortality that depopulated vast tracts and creates an economic and migration upheaval as never seen before. A mini-Ice Age. An energy crisis as the great forests had already been cut down for heating. The Hundred Years War. Papal schism … everyone in Europe was excommunicated by one pope or the other to be left in Heavenly jeopardy. The Mongol horde is pressing from the East. The Muslim Ottoman conquest into eastern Europe threatening Western Europe.Chaucer is writing a comedy in the midst of it all.Liza Picard chooses to explore Chaucer’s Country, City and Soldier pilgrim characters to deep dive much more of the story. The story links the details from 14th-century industry, economics, behaviors, belief system and the general body of history with Chaucer’s narrative.Concepts and things stand out to make you think and imagine. Color, as we know it, has no common understanding other than the dyes and mysterious nature of Creation. Red socks woven in an English village maybe something else down the road. The Plowman’s shovel is unchanged from the time of the Pyramids. The physical and social distortions from the plague requires new knowledge of post-plague conditions … roads, travel itineraries, and communication must be re-established or discovered anew. Red hair is a long established sign of dishonesty and thieves in particular. Avoid the inn that lets redheads stay.It’s a great fun read. The Kindle internet search time might exceed the time you spend reading the book. It will trip plenty of personal paradigm switches for further consideration. It’s pure mind fodder.Perhaps a similar treatment of Boccaccio's Decameron from a generation earlier might be in order.
It's a textbook, it's not going to be entertaining, but it arrived in a timely manner and was in very good condition.
