Started reading this before a week-long trip to Paris, just to learn and get more out of the city and culture. It definitely delivers in that regard, with Horne writing with an obvious love of the city and Parisians and often with a flair of humor. After my trip, I was still reading and really got more enjoyment out of the book since I would know the areas of the city frequently referenced. This book would be difficult if you've never been to Paris or don't have a general sense of the neighborhoods, major buildings and monuments. Also, while this is a history of a city, Paris was involved pretty much in every major event for the last 1000 years in Europe. Having a general sense of European history is also a benefit since Horne will assume the reader does.Overall it is an excellent narrative of the history of the city and its people. I would've preferred more details on the Roman history and the period leading up to the medieval period, but the descriptions of the politics, culture and the frequent civil unrest give you the sense of Paris as a living and breathing organism.

I rarely write book reviews because reading is such a subjective enterprise that my comments may or may not have any bearing on whether another person enjoys the same book. This book, however, deserves all the praise that I can give to a work of history. It manages to be both eminently readable and comprehensively researched, both sweeping and surprisingly concise (how does one manage to distill WW II into 10 pages??), and truly stands as a heartfelt tribute to the city of Paris, and thereby to all of France itself.I have read other history books which attempt to similarly cover great spans of history, and they always end up seeming ponderous and labored. This book on the other hand allows the reader a very detailed exploration of the tumultuous history of one of Europe's most famous cities, while providing a very emotional and moving story.Magnifique, and highly recommended to both Francophiles and history lovers alike.

Still reading it, but I love it! It's a very informative book about the history of Paris. At least it is for an amateur historian like myself. Wish that I had read this before my trip there in 2015! I would have understood more of what I was seeing!

This book gives a chronological series of short synopsis of significant moments of French political history. I felt it leaned dark, or perhaps French history is just that ugly. Reading it made me blue. Not sure why. Still trudging through the work. I've been stuck at Napoleon for a few months now because I keep finding other, more interesting things, to read. Surely there is a better work on French history, non?

I recently read this book for the second time, after having studied paris's fascinating history more in depth. I enjoyed the book immensely both times, but I think it works best as a means to tie the different "ages" of Paris together after you have had the pleasure of learning about the riveting details that an overview like this doesn't have the ability to cover.

I read this book before a trip to France and Paris. Changed my way of looking at and thinking about this country and its people. France does have a different view of itself based on a tumultuous history and grandiose kings and politicians especially Napoleon Bonaparte. Knowing more about this history helps in understanding France as a country and a culture. After reading Seven Ages of Paris and then visiting (sixth visit so I had a background), I came away sympathetic to and impressed by the French people, and Parisians in particular, their way of life, their views and their attitudes. America can learn important lessons from France. And the French know they can learn important lessons from America.

I've read this book twice; once when I first moved to Paris in 2002, and again this year (left Paris in 2006). As a very general history of both France and Paris, the book is fine. The problem stems from a lack of concrete and detailed information about Paris itself over the ages. Therefore, Horne uses general French history to fill the gaps with interesting/entertaining anecdotes about the ruling class or the current political climate. Arguably the most important period of Paris' history is glossed over in a few pages, and that is Haussmann's complete urban makeover of the city. This IS the Paris one sees today...and he barely covers it. Instead, Horne focuses on Louis Napoleon's government and problems with Prussia.A second issue (minor) is Horne's constant use of french terms throughout the text and without the english translation. If the comments are important enough to add into the text, certainly they're worth translating(?). As it stands, the reader misses out on whatever the author's intended message was. There are much better books on Paris.

First, Mr. Horne's writing style is inviting. He enjoys the telling and that shows - fun to read, tons of information about the city. This is no short book and the material means it's not going to open itself to speed reading, but the wealth of the history of Paris and how that history created the city and its architecture, planning (using the term loosely) is a great way to prepare for touring the city of lights. Time after time, walking, the historical context of what I was seeing was presented by this excellent book.
